This includes both speech (articulation, intonation, rate, intensity) and language (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, both receptive and expressive language, including reading and writing). Depending on the nature and severity of the disorder, common treatments may range from physical strengthening exercises, instructive or repetitive practice and drilling, to the use of audio-visual aids. Speech and language therapists (SLTs) or speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide a wide range of services for all ages, in early intervention (ages 0-3 years old), preschool, primary and secondary schooling, home care, and hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes. Speech therapy
Relearning speech and language If a stroke damages the language centre in your brain, you will have difficulty understanding, speaking or making sense when you speak, read or write. You may also have difficulty pronouncing words. This difficulty with speech and language is called aphasia. It is common in people who have had a stroke involving their left cerebral hemisphere. If you have aphasia after your stroke, a speech therapist will work with you to relearn how to use language or develop other ways of communicating. Although your language skills may return on their own during the first three months after your stroke, a speech therapist will likely get involved early on to make the most of the communication skills that you have. They will also help you improve your ability to swallow, and develop problem-solving and social skills that youll need cope after a stroke. Other ways of communicating First, your speech therapist will assess your situation and the degree of your impairment then develop a strategy that is best for you. This might include communicating with pictures, gestures, body or sign language, or a device called a word board. A word board is a device that shows single words or short phrases that a person can point to in order to communicate with others. Wordboards work best for people who know what they want to say but cant form the words themselves. A strategy to improve communication might also include a combination of intensive exercises such as repeating the therapist's words, practicing following directions, and doing reading or writing exercises. Computer-assisted communication is also sometimes used.

SPEECH THERAPY Levent Arslan 1. Introduction Speech and language disorders adversely affect the communication skills of at least 3.5% of the human population according to World Health Organization statistics. The degrees of disorders vary from mild impairments like pronunciation errors to more severe ones including hearing-loss, aphasia, and cranio-facial anomalies. Speech therapy aims to provide therapeutic assistance to individuals with all degrees of impairments. The improvements in speech and signal processing technology have resulted in the development of computer-assisted methods for speech therapy [1], [2]. In [3], the assessment of articulation problems in children is formulated while in [4] monitoring in speech therapy is addressed. The main objective of this project is the development of an interface called CATSEAR for speech therapists and patients that will be integrated with speech processing technology. The interface consists of analysis, recognition, and reporting modules. It will be useful as a remote monitoring tool for the therapist. Furthermore, it may serve as a replacement of the therapist when s/he is not available. Figure 1 shows the system flowchart of CATSEAR. Figure 1. Main modules of CATSEAR.

Does my child have an articulation disorder? What is it? A child with an articulation disorder often has difficulty with the physical production of individual speech sounds. An articulation disorder can oftene be characterized by the inaccurate production of certain sounds such as incorrect placement of the tongue, lips teeth, or soft palate during speech. A child with an articulation disorder needs speech therapy. Without treatment, a child may struggle with lifelong vocational, learning, emotional and social problems.
Causes of Articulation Disorder For many children the cause of oral or motor dysfunction articulation disorder comes from from brain damage or neurological dysfunction. For other children, however, there is no clearly identifyable cause.
    Symptoms of Articulation Disorder
    • Distortions - An attempt is made at the correct sound but it results in a poor production Omissions - Sounds in words and sentences may be completely omitted Additions - Extra sounds or syllables are added to the word Dysarthria - slow, slurred speech with inaccurate movement of the articulators

Since communication is an innate need and desire, an inability to do so efficiently most often results in distress and frustration, appearing in the form of agitation, tantrum behavior or withdrawal. People who are either born with or acquire a speech or language disorder, often experience difficulty forming relationships and interacting in a traditional manner with family or peers. Disorganization of language processing impairs the ability to communicate and understand typical patterns of socialization. It is most often an isolating disorder, whether in early development, childhood, adolescence, or in progressive adult diseases and aging.
