Mary started private Speech Therapy at 23 months. To a certain extent her language delays can be attributed to a minor hearing loss (which was corrected at 21 months with ear tubes), and our bilingual home (Spanish and English), but mostly, I feel, they are caused by general muscle weakness in the mouth area and slow comprehension of what speech is and how to get it to work. Although speech delays are typical for children with Williams Syndrome, language and vocabulary will eventually become a strength. Here are some of the play exercises we use in speech therapy to help strengthen the mouth, encourage vocalization, and increase comprehension of speech and other concepts...
Horn blowing - have a variety of different toy horns or blowing toys to play with. This helps lip closure and rounding and tongue muscles. Also try blowing cotton balls off your hand or bubbles (cotton balls and bubbles are easier to teach blowing if the child does not already have that skill).
Singing - Lots of singing! Pause to give Mary a chance to fill in the blank ("Old McDonald had a Farm E-I-E-I-_ ?). Sing songs with accompanying gestures (Itsy-Bitsy Spider).
With words Mary readily uses ("MORE"), expand for her ("MORE" "BUBBLES").

Speech Therapy for Adults and Children The Rehabilitation Department at South Coast Medical Center is staffed by licensed Speech-Language Pathologists who are trained to evaluate and treat communication disorders / swallowing safety in both adults and children. Speech Therapists work closely with the patient, family, and physician in order to establish treatment goals which will be functional and motivating. Patient and family education is emphasized in the treatment plan to help empower patients. Pediatric Speech Therapy Now Offered Learning to communicate is an essential building block for social, cognitive, academic and intellectual development. As children learn language, it is normal to make mistakes. A child having difficulty comprehending speech or expressing themselves may have trouble with common communication tasks such as making their requests understood, making friends or following their teacher's instruction. This frustration often leads to physical outbursts and emotional withdrawal. Pediatric speech therapy services are now offered at South Coast. A Speech Pathologist can administer tests and analyze a child's speech to determine if there is a communication impairment. After the assessment, the Speech Pathologist may provide tips for stimulating language development and ask the child return at a later date if problems persist. Otherwise the speech pathologist may recommend the child begin treatment with a focus on stimulating language.

    Speech and Language Therapy
Children with cerebral palsy may have difficulties arising from the speech centres of the brain, cognitive difficulties and/or dysarthia (difficulties with control of the muscles needed for speech). Speech therapy works on communication through speech or other modes to help the child express needs, wants and feelings and to aid integration in home, school and social situations. It trains oral movements for both speech and eating and drinking, also helps in the use of special communication devices such as computer voice synthesizers. Like many approaches, speech therapy needs a stronger research base. A systematic review of research evidence available in 2004 (published in 2005) showed that direct speech therapy was effective for children with cerebral palsy in areas where it had been tested; but that further research was needed to strengthen and widen this to all the speech, language, and communication disorders associated with cerebral palsy. Speech therapists work in NHS and private settings, sometimes both. Where speech therapy is given at school as a part of special needs provision, this is arranged by the local education authority but still provided by either the NHS or (sometimes, due to shortages) the private sector. They are regulated by the Health Professions Council, which holds the register.
