Spinal cord injury
Traumatic injury to the spinal cord typically happens in motor or sporting accidents or in acts of violence. SCI causes loss of neurons and other cells at the injury site. It also typically causes a break in many of the communication fibres ("axons") that run up and down the spinal cord. The spinal cord is capable of only limited spontaneous repair: dead neurons are not replaced and injured axons don't regrow back to their original targets. Treatment for SCI is currently limited to anti-inflammatory drugs (steroids) and rehabilitation.

Aaron was then assigned to physical therapist, Roger Rich and occupational therapist, Michelle Hardy. Said Roger, "I found a skinny, 20 year old, lying supine in bed, in a rigid neck brace who could not move one muscle below his shoulders, save for a flicker in his left big toe and who could not move himself one millimeter in any direction. I took what seemed like so little at first glance as hopeful because the flicker in his toe was accompanied by scattered sensation throughout his body below his injury level. Not many others, however, saw much to give them hope, including his doctor".
Aaron is an athlete, albeit disabled at this time, his athletic mentality is fiercer than ever before. An athlete's mind is fueled by excess, excessive drive, excessive determination. Their spirit thrives on excellence and in constant pursuit of progress. Aaron needed someone, at this point in his recovery process, that understood this. Someone with indepth knowledge of repairing a severely altered, catastrophically injured , non-functional body. Someone willing to overturn every stone in pursuit of recovery. Someone with deep compassion that could feel, respect, and understand Aaron's plight. Someone with passion and drive for excellence. Someone truly dedicated to creating a difference in Aaron's young life, as well as in others. As near impossible and tall an order as this was, our hopes and prayers were manifested in an extraordinary human being by the name of Taylor-Kevin Isaacs.

more about Spinal cord injury

  • The spinal cord is a column of nerve tissues averaging about 18 inches in length, extending from the base of the brain to the waist. The spinal cord is enclosed by the vertebrae column, which consist of 33 vertebral bones: Seven cervical, 12 thoracic, five lumbar, five sacral fused to form one, and four coccyx fused into one. The nerves to trunk and limbs branch out from the spinal cord, exiting at each vertebral level.
  • These nerves transmit the messages from the brain to the muscles, stimulating the movement while transmitting sensations from the body such as pain, temperature, position and touch. The spinal cord is the important pathway of communication between the brain and the body. Spinal cord damage interrupts the spinal cord's ability to send and receive information from the brain to the each part of the body, causing paralysis below the level of injury.

spinal cord injury
Some of effects of injuries to different parts of the spinal cord.
Picture credit: Wings for Life An injury to the spinal cord usually begins with a sudden, traumatic blow to the spine that fractures or dislocates vertebrae . The damage begins at the moment of injury when displaced bone fragments, disc material, or ligaments bruise or tear into spinal cord tissue. Most injuries to the spinal cord don't completely sever it. Instead, an injury is more likely to cause fractures and compression of the vertebrae, which then crush and destroy the axons , extensions of nerve cells that carry signals up and down the spinal cord between the brain and the rest of the body. An injury to the spinal cord can damage a few, many, or almost all of these axons. Some injuries will allow almost complete recovery. Others will result in complete paralysis.
Is there any treatment?
Improved emergency care for people with spinal cord injuries and aggressive treatment and rehabilitation can minimize damage to the nervous system and even restore limited abilities. Respiratory complications are often an indication of the severity of spinal cord injury. About one-third of those with injury to the neck area will need help with breathing and require respiratory support. The steroid drug methylprednisolone appears to reduce the damage to nerve cells if it is given within the first 8 hours after injury. Rehabilitation programs combine physical therapies with skill-building activities and counseling to provide social and emotional support.

Spinal cord Injury
Spinal cord injury commonly known as ‘SCI’ refers to injures in our spinal cord. Spinal cord injury can result in major dysfunction in feeling and mobility. Some of the common reasons for spinal cord injury are ailments and/or shocks. The ailments leading to spinal cord injury are Friedreich’s Ataxia, spina bifida, and polio among others. The shocks may emanate from sudden impacts from motor accidents falls or even gunshots. Though the term is ‘spinal cord injury’, yet it is generally seen that in most of such cases, the spinal cord as such remains intact whereas its injuries leads to major dysfunctions. Notably, spinal cord injury is vastly different from injuries that affect the back like pinched nerves, ruptured disks or spinal stenosis. Even while one suffers major impact on one’s neck or back, it may not necessarily lead to spinal cord injury once the spinal cord is not damaged. At those times, the patient can be saved from paralysis the moment those bones are replaced. The extent of damages from spinal cord injuries largely varies with the level and type of the damages. There can be incomplete spinal cord injury and complete spinal cord injury. Alzheimers disease Genital warts treatment Vitamin Weight loss ... Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal cord injury involves damage to the nerves within the spinal canal; most SCIs are caused by trauma to the vertebral column, thereby affecting the spinal cord's ability to send and receive messages from the brain to the body's systems that control sensory, motor and autonomic function below the level of injury. The spinal cord and the brain together make up the central nervous system (CNS). The spinal cord coordinates the body's movement and sensation. The spinal cord includes neurons and long nerve fibers called axons. Axons in the spinal cord carry signals downward from the brain (along descending pathways) and upward toward the brain (along ascending pathways). Many axons in these pathways are covered by sheaths of an insulating substance called myelin, which gives them a whitish appearance; therefore, the region in which they lie is called "white matter." The nerve cells themselves, with their tree-like branches called dendrites that receive signals from other nerve cells, make up "gray matter." This gray matter lies in a butterfly-shaped region in the center of the spinal cord.

What is a Spinal Cord Injury?
A Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is damage or trauma to the spinal cord that results in a loss or impaired function causing reduced mobility or feeling. Common causes of damage are trauma (car accident, gunshot, falls, sports injuries, etc.) or disease (Transverse Myelitis, Polio, Spina Bifida, Friedreich's Ataxia, etc.). The spinal cord does not have to be severed in order for a loss of functioning to occur. In most people with SCI, the spinal cord is intact, but the cellular damage to it results in loss of functioning. SCI is very different from back injuries such as ruptured disks, spinal stenosis or pinched nerves.
It is possible for a person to "break their back or neck" yet not sustain a spinal cord injury as long as only the bones
