About the Stained Glass windows in Christ Church Ithan Nave Aisle Windows The nave aisle windows of Christ Church, Ithan, were designed and executed by the Willet Stained Glass Studios of Philadelphia. The windows illustrate key events in the life of Jesus. The chronology begins at the rear on the Gospel side moving toward the Chancel, crossing to the epistle side and moving toward the rear. The Annunciation The angel Gabriel stands behind Mary holding a lily. Above is Mary's monogram and below is a fleur-de-lys, symbol of her purity. The Nativity The Holy Family are gathered in the stable under the rays of the Star. Three wise men are in the ventilator section at the bottom. The symbol at the top is the Christmas Rose. The Baptism The Holy spirit appears in the form of a dove as John baptizes Jesus. The escallop shell is the symbol at the top. In the Ventilator is a font with flowing water. The Transfiguration Jesus appears on the Mount of Transfiguration flanked by Moses, holding the Tablets of the Law, and Elijah with a scroll. The Spirit dove is at the apex of the window. The three small figures at the bottom are Peter, James and John who witnessed the scene from below. The Last Supper This window tells the story of the Last Supper by a single figure of Jesus holding the chalice. The symbol at the top is a chalice and host. At the bottom are the five loaves and two fish, the boy's lunch which Jesus multiplied to feed five thousand people.

Stained Glass
Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, stained glass panel, about 1496. Museum no. C.438-1918 (click image for larger version) Decorated windows, known traditionally as 'stained glass', have played an important role in the art of the Christian church for about a thousand years. They have also been used in public buildings and private houses, and more recently in offices and corporate buildings. Much of glass that was designed for religious settings has been removed from its original location and dispersed, largely because of political and religious upheavals. Fortunately some of it survived and found its way into museum collections in Britain, mainland Europe and the United States. A choice selection is displayed in the Sacred Silver and Stained Glass galleries , along with a new piece specially commissioned for the gallery. More stained glass can be seen in the British Galleries, or is scheduled for display in the Medieval and Renaissance galleries that will open in 2009. Stained Glass
From LoveToKnow 1911
STAINED. GLASS All coloured glass is, strictly speaking, "stained" by some metallic oxide added to it in the process of manufacture. But the term "stained glass" is popularly, as well as technically, used in a more limited sense, and is understood to refer to stained glass windows. Still the words "stained glass" do not fully describe what is meant; for the glass in coloured windows is for the most part not only stained but painted. Such painting was, however, until comparatively modern times, used only to give details of drawing and to define form. The colour in a stained glass window was not painted on the glass but incorporated in it, mixed with it in the making - whence the term "pot- metal " by which self-coloured glass is known, i.e. glass coloured in the melting pot. A medieval window was consequently a patchwork of variously coloured pieces. And the earlier its date the more surely was it a mosaic , not in the form of tesserae, but in the manner known as " opus sectile." Shaped pieces of coloured glass were, that is to say, put together like the parts of a puzzle . The x11.4 a nearest approach to an exception to this rule is a fragment at the Victoria and Albert Museum, in which actual tesserae are fused together into a solid slab of many-coloured glass, in effect a window
