Ancient Egypt is the origin of alchemy and presentday sufism.

The Ancient Egyptian Roots of Sufism
The common premise is that “Sufism” is an Islamic group practicing a form of mysticism that originated in Persia. “Sufism” has nothing to do with Islam or Persia, and everything to do with the quiet people of Ancient and Baladi Egypt. Two points of interest should be mentioned here:
  • The term and practices of “Sufism” surfaced as a result of Islamic conquests and the subsequent terrorizing of its victims. In order for the Islamic-terrorized masses to maintain their ancient traditions, they had to camouflage old traditions under an Islamic garment.
  • The pure form of “Sufism” originated in Egypt. Other countries copied it and were quick to take the credit for it. Their application of “Sufism” is impure and incomplete.
The common premise (mentioned above) about the roots and essence of “Sufism” is absolutely wrong, as we will conclude by examining the facts. Here are just a few introductory facts:
  • The notion of an Islamic origin of “Sufism” is wrong. “Islamic mysticism” is an oxymoron—as per the following selected points:

    Sufis in the Muslim World

June 2004 version One could read the Muslim Hadiths and conclude that Islam is primarily legalism that would make the Pharisees of Jesus’ feel at home. Sufiism is a large number of inter-related sects of Islam that is a reaction against this focus on rituals and practices. Orthodox Islam says little about the heart and desiring God; Sufiism says that true religion is inner truth, not outer practice. Christianity, by contrast, says both the internal and external matter. We will discuss Sufi beliefs, Sufi leaders, Sufi "denominations" in general, and then focus comparing Sufiism with the Christianity. Some Sufi Beliefs Sufiism has always claimed to be Muslim, but it has had a troubled relationship with Sunni and Shi’ite Islam. Sufi writings mention Christians, Gnostics, and Zoroastrians (Magians). Various Sufi schools have apparently been influenced by these, as well as Indian influence. Some Sufis are monastic-like, perhaps showing Christian influence. Strict Islamic Law and the five pillars of Islam are like a "schoolmaster" that Sufis say is fine for others, but they have gone beyond the need for it. Instead, Sufis follow books that other Muslims do not.

The Sufi Path is a process of amanesis (remembrance, realization). In pre-eternity, God asked the spirits: Alastu bi Rabikum (Am I not your Lord)? When we come into this material existence, we forget about pre-eternity and the task of life is to remember our way back to the truth concerning the nature of our essential relationship with God. This process of remembering or recollecting is known as amanesis.

My Year Inside Radical Islam - Part 1
About six or seven months ago I read the book My Year Inside Radical Islam by Daveed Gartenstein-Ross. While reading the book, a number of thoughts and emotions bubbled to the surface, among which were a certain sense of resonance with various facets of the author's experiences, as well as a sense of empathy for him because of his worries that he might be assassinated by some radicalized, fundamentalist, self-appointed, presumptuous 'agent' of an invented theology who believed that if anyone became Muslim and, then, moved on to some other faith system, then such an apostate must be killed. On the other hand, I also found myself in disagreement with a number of the author's ideas and some of his conclusions.

However, while the fires of Sufism and Sufi practice are in some places being put out by lack of both interest in the youth or strong leadership among the elders, its flames are still burning bright within the hearts of impassioned adherents in small pockets throughout Yemen. One can still find non-Sufi Yemenis who are lovers of saints ( muhibbin ) carrying out Sufi devotions privately and at the tombs of deceased holy men and women. The current situation of the Shadhiliya/'Alawiya Sufi order of Sanaa is a typical case in point of the problems facing Sufi orders in Yemen where covert but commanding devotion to the saints and Sufi shaykhs of Yemen can still be found. Before going any further it is important to say something about the usage of the English word "saint." It has been common practice in Islamic studies to use the English word "saint" to render the Koranic

    The Sufi Conundrum
by Jay Kinney I can still recall the first time I ran into someone purporting to be a Sufi. I was visiting San Francisco in 1971 and had just met the long-haired printer who was publishing an underground comic that I was co-editing. He sported a worn denim jacket with a large winged heart embroidered on the back in the homespun fashion of the time. Having seen that symbol around before, I asked him what it stood for. "Sufism," he replied (or something to that effect), which led me to inquire about what that was. The gist of his response was that Sufis were proponents of love and he was a part of a local Sufi group that held "Sufi dancing" every week. "You oughta come," he opined. "It's a great place to meet chicks!" As it turned out I didn't go Sufi dancing, I didn't meet any Sufi "chicks," and my later relations with that printer were soon clouded by his deplorable business sense, all of which left me with an extremely confused notion of Sufism. A couple of years later, having now moved to San Francisco, I went to a reading by Allen Ginsberg which was preceded by a performance of the Sufi Choir, a Bay Area phenomenon of the time. Given their mixed repertoire and Marin hippie sartorial style, the Sufi Choir didn't ease my confusion about Sufism one bit. On the one hand I had heard that Sufis were Islamic mystics (though surely the printer with the denim jacket and the Sufi Choir didn't match that image); on the other hand I had read a short book by Sufi teacher Hazrat Inayat Khan that emphasized the unity of all religions. This sounded fine, but all the parts didn't fit into a coherent whole as far as I could tell.

Sacred Ecology of the Heart and of the Earth – A Ziraat Retreat
    Saturday May 31st, 2008, 10 AM - 5:00 PM

Oikos, the Greek root of the word “ecology,” means “home.” To the extent we are at home with our souls, hearts and minds, we are naturally at home and intimate with the natural world. In such a condition, we naturally uphold the freshness, beauty and sacredness of all life. The result is that we see life differently. We recognize, as Thomas Merton described, that all of life is “pure affirmation” - an Emerald Earth. By this shift in vision a door opens in our life, and we find ourselves participating in an uplifted and resurrecting world, a life filled with possibility and satisfaction. Our work today will be in sharing spiritual practices and perspectives that help us in purifying the mind and heart of all that is foreign, and of seeing how this process aligns us with the “wisdom of the Earth” - an embodied spirituality that honors our humanness, our senses and every aspect of our corporeal and spiritual life.

Sufism - The Way of The Heart S ufism is known as the Way of the Heart, the Way of the Pure, the Mystical Path of Islam. By whatever name it is called, it is the path which takes the seeker to the Divine Presence. In essence Sufism is a means and a way by which the seeker will move from the gravity of his or her lower self, to ascend, with the assistance of a mystical guide, and through the methods and practices defined by the Way he or she has chosen, to the state wherein the Vision of God is presented to her or him. The ways to God are as numerous as the breaths of mankind. Each individual person has his or her own, personal and private way to the Divine Presence. The Mystical Path to the Divine Presence Among human beings, there must always exist those, whom through Divine Grace, have received their Trusts from God in this worldly life. They move about in the world as if they were part of it, yet inside, their hearts and souls are in the Divine Presence. If they ask of God, their request is accepted, and if they look at mankind, it is always with the eye of mercy to those less fortunate than themselves. They are known as the Friends of God, called Awliya in Sufism. It is Sufism which is related to them and they are product of Sufism.

The Osmanli Naks-i'bendi Hakkani Dergahi is an Islamic center for the worship of ALLAH. The Dergahi (pronounced der-ga-ha) was built and is maintained according to Islamic principles and practices. In 2003, the Dergah was blessed by the Name of Allah appearing in our pond, spelled out in snow. We are Muslims. Our faith is Islam. Islam means submitting to God's Will and accepting that there is no god but ALLAH (the One God) and that Muhammad is the Messenger of ALLAH, peace and blessings upon him, as are Jesus, Moses, Abraham, Noah and Adam, peace be upon them all. Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is the Seal (last) of the Prophets. Like the majority of Muslims, we are Sunni Muslims.

    Sufism and Sufi Poetry
    Nov 18, 2002
Sufism began only a century or so after Mohammed's death. The Sufis were alarmed by the materialism represented by the silks and satins of the sultans and other wealthy patrons of Islam. Thus they emphasized spiritual purity by wearing coarse wool clothing (Ar. suf ) and sought direct contact with God through contemplation and mystical encounter. They followed spiritual leaders ( sheikhs ) who taught methods for mysticism and ecstasy. This path resembles that of ascetic monks in the Christian world except that Sufis normally marry and do not retreat to remote monestaries. POETRY Sufi love poetry tends to be based on the metaphor that our love for God and our seeking contact with him is like seeking a departed lover. Rabi'a, an 8th C woman poet believed that God's love is at the core of the universe and that we need to feel that love in all we do. The pain of separation from a lover and the joy of meeting again is like the joy of reunion with God. One of her poems goes: My God and my Lord: Eyes are at rest

    Secret survey exposes widespread radicalism

An undercover survey of more than 100 mosques and Islamic schools in America has exposed widespread radicalism, including the alarming finding that 3 in 4 Islamic centers are hotbeds of anti-Western extremism, WND has learned. The Mapping Sharia in America Project, sponsored by the Washington-based Center for Security Policy, has trained former counterintelligence and counterterrorism agents from the FBI, CIA and U.S. military, who are skilled in Arabic and Urdu, to conduct undercover reconnaissance at some 2,300 mosques and Islamic centers and schools across the country.
"So far of 100 mapped, 75 should be on a watchlist," an official familiar with the project said. Many of the Islamic centers are operating under the auspices of the Saudi Arabian government and U.S. front groups for the radical Muslim Brotherhood based in Egypt.

    The Sufi Book of Life
99 Pathways of the Heart for the Modern Dervish

Part meditation book, part oracle, and part collection of Sufi lore, poetry, and stories, The Sufi Book of Life offers a fresh interpretation of the fundamental spiritual practice found in all ancient and modern Sufi schools-the meditations on the 99 Qualities of Unity. Unlike most books on Sufism, which are primarily collections of translated Sufi texts, this accessible guide is a handbook that explains how to apply Sufi principles to modern life. With inspirational commentary that connects each quality with contemporary concerns such as love, work, and success, as well as timeless wisdom from Sufi masters, both ancient and modern, such as Rumi, Hafiz, Shabistari, Rabia, Inayat Khan, Indries Shah, Irina Tweedie, Bawa Muhaiyadden, and more, The Sufi Book of Life is a dervish guide to life and love for the twenty-first century.
Neil Douglas-Klotz, Ph.D., is a world-renowned scholar in religious studies, spirituality, and psychology, a leader in the International Association of Sufism, and the cofounder of the worldwide network of the Dances of Universal Peace. He is director of the Edinburgh Institute for Advanced Learning and cochair of the Mysticism Group of the American Academy of Religion.
