Evaluating Dr. Kevorkian’s contribution to the right-to-die movement in America
The release of Dr. Jack Kevorkian is welcome news. He has suffered the eight years of imprisonment with calm and fortitude and deserves a peaceful retirement. But the thought he might have any influence on further developments does not make any sense. And while we are currently among the media circus surrounding his release, it is time to look back at what went on and what the future holds.
Kevorkian was never a part of the organized right-to-die movement, and publicly scoffed at its efforts to change the law. He was a lone ranger on this issue. The general public is split about the worth of his contribution to achieving so-called ‘death with dignity’... Read more ... ANNOUNCING:

Why assisted suicide for the mentally troubled is so problematic
For the 25 years that I have been campaigning for the right to choose to die, and get help with it, I have kept my arguments confined to the terminally ill and the hopelessly ill competent adult. People are always asking me why don't I include the mentally ill in the struggle. Here are nine reasons:
1. Poor mental health can be treated medications, psychotherapy etc whereas terminal illness followed by death is inevitable.

Introduction
Who am I? And what am I doing here on the Internet? My name is Linda Flatt. I'm a survivor mom, a support group facilitator, the Southern Nevada Field Liaison for SPAN USA (Suicide Prevention Action Network USA), founding member of the Nevada Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (dissolved in June 2006), and Chair of the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention (established in March 2005). In June of 1993, my son, Paul, intentionally took his own life - at the age of 25. That event shattered my life and put me on a very dark road with no light and no road map. Because I had no frame of reference for surviving a suicide death, recovery was long and difficult. But with God's help and the support of loving friends and family, I have traveled through the darkest part of my healing journey, and I am at the place where I want to share my experience with other survivors.

Suicide and Divorce
I've got bad news for you about suicide. The fact that you're divorced or thinking about divorce places you at greater risk for suicide. This page is all about why you're at greater risk for killing yourself when you're going through divorce, and what you can do to deal with it. The effect of divorce on suicide risk Danger signs What you can do If you're thinking about killing yourself
The Effect of Divorce on Suicide Risk
One recent study by the National Institute for Healthcare Research in Rockville, MD indicates that divorced people are three times as likely to commit suicide as people who are married. The Institute says that divorce now ranks as the number one factor linked with suicide rates in major U.S. cities, ranking above all other physical, financial, and psychological factors. A study of 13 European countries by the regional European office of the World Health Organization found that divorce was the only factor linked with suicide in every one of the 13 countries. The study showed that factors like poverty, unemployment, and disability were associated with divorce in some of the countries but that disruption of the family was the only factor linked with divorce in all 13. Anecdotally, the coroner of Butler County, Ohio told UPI in the late 80's that he thought the high rate of suicide in that area was traceable to men's inability to cope with divorce. Dr. Richard Burkhardt said he thought women were more likely to feel needed after divorce because they needed to take care of children. But men, he said, felt cut off from their role as head of the household and felt they had no reason to live.

Suicide
Life is tough - we've figured that out long ago, and just in case we forget, books and religion constantly remind us how critical it is to overcome adversity. They point out that life is a precious gift, and yet some people insist on throwing it away. Suicide isn't a recent phenomenon however, and despite extensive research, its causes remain varied and complex. Sacrificing one's life to for others or for principle Martyrs samurai warrior committing seppuku (a ritual suicide under the warrior code known as Bushido), the Native American dog soldier or the Aztec soldier throwing himself on his enemy in order to attain the "Flower Death" , each held the promise of a reward to carry them through their grim ordeal. From Patrick Henry to contemporary suicide-bombing terrorists, people have continued to view some causes as greater than themselves. Refusal to live with a terminal disease or illness While it is obvious that all of us will die, for some the reality of death is much more imminent and certain. Modern medicine has extended the human life span, but sometimes all it can offer is the certainty that death is rapidly approaching. And near the end, quality of life inevitably tends to degrade. The decision to take one's life rather than waiting for nature to take its course is one response to this situation. Western society tends to be more accepting of this form of suicide , which carries less social stigma than other types.

  • Cry for help to get people to attend to the problems which you are currently experiencing. Manipulative action to keep others from changing their styles of interacting with you.
