Sunburn risk factors for beachgoing children

Dermatology Online Journal 14 (1): 28
Department of Dermatology and the Office of Biostatistics, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, USA.
Abstract
Sunburn prevention in children and the early establishment of sun protective behavior is predicted to result in a decreased future incidence of skin cancer. A survey of beachgoing families was conducted to evaluate the parental/guardian role in the use of sun protection for their minor children. Ethnicity and Fitzpatrick Skin Type of children and their parents were the best predictors for sunburn. White, non-Hispanic children were 7.8 times more likely to have a history of sunburn than children whose parents identified them as Hispanic when controlled for the same Fitzpatrick Skin Types. Because sunburn results in an injury to the skin that may cause future skin cancer, primary public health measures have focused on preventing sunburn. Beachgoing during the summer is recognized as a high risk activity in an environment prone to ultraviolet light (UVL) injury because of the natural conditions and skin exposure patterns that increase sunburn risk. In order to evaluate current sun protection habits and risk factors for sunburn in children, a survey was given to beachgoing families.
Methods
Following Institutional Review Board approval, beachgoing families with children less than 19 years old anonymously completed written surveys during summer 2004 in English (Figure 1) or Spanish at Galveston beaches. Survey participants provided information about family member demographics (including ethnicity), Fitzpatrick Skin Types (FST), sun protection strategies used at the beach; parents or guardians were evaluated for basic knowledge of UVL.

http://www.exitmundi.nl/Sunburn.htm
Who said the Sun will shine tomorrow? Here's the bad news: one day, the Sun will NOT shine anymore. Eventually, the Sun will die. It will be a beautiful thing to see. But there's a bit of a problem: long before, the dying Sun will simply have swallowed the earth. In case you didn't know, the Sun is in fact a huge nuclear power plant. It runs on hydrogen. The Sun transfers hydrogen atoms into helium by nuclear fusion. It's nothing like the puny hydrogen bombs humanity finds so impressive. Each second, no less than 400 million tons of hydrogen goes boom. Unfortunately, the amount of fuel inside the Sun is limited. You can't see it, but in fact, that huge light bulb in the sky we call `Sun' shrinks and cools down a tiny little bit every second. The Sun is `middle aged'. In another 5,000 million years, it will run out of hydrogen. Long before, we will notice the consequences. On the one hand, the Sun will get brighter and warmer. On the other hand, as the Sun shrinks and becomes less heavy, its gravitational pull on the Earth will loosen. Consequently, the orbit of our planet and all other planets in the solar system will widen. Okay, so an earthly year will be several weeks longer. But don't mistake, there's a downside here. It will get colder. And not just a little bit. Within `only' several billions of years, Earth will become an icy, permafrost planet, where it will be hard to survive.

NATURAL CURES FOR SUNBURN
Heal Sunburn Without Pain or Peeling - More Than Home Remedies
Skin will continue to burn until cold water or ice is applied, so always cool down the burn first. Ice is good for most burns, but severe burns can only tolerate cold water.
Be wary of Sunburn sprays and creams from the drugstore - some of these contain lanolin, which actually causes increased pain once the cool cream or spray is warmed by the heat of your body. Aloe vera products are often just lanolin with a touch of aloe added, so caution should be taken before using these. Even pure aloe will not prevent peeling later.
Lavender Essential Oil
is a miraculous, natural cure for sunburn. You want to be careful getting the oil onto the burn because simply touching the burn will hurt. It is best to drip it on, then spread it (using very gentle pressure) with a piece of tissue. After about a half hour or less, the pain should be gone. The pain should not return unless you jump in the shower soon after application of the oil. You may need to reapply the oil in the morning. That's it. No more pain, no blistering, AND you get to keep the color. Even those of us who are pale as ghosts won't peel.
OR
Make a pot of boiling water and steep many tea bags to a very strong tea in a large pot. Add ice until the tea is just slightly warm. Put a bath towel (preferably a brown one, as a white one will probably be "dyed" brown) into the pot and keep turning the towel until it has soaked up all of the tea. Have the sunburned person lie on the floor or bed on top of an old towel to catch drips. Place the wet towel over the sunburned area of the body. Leave the towel on for a half hour for a moderate burn and an hour for a strong burn. The slightly warm tea will actually feel very cool on burned skin, and cold water would be almost painfully too cold on the hot skin. The burned person immediately feels relief from the wet, getting cooler and cooler gradually, with the actual temperature of the skin also cooling.

How to Treat a Sunburn
Ouch! Ouch! You went to the beach and rolled back red as a lobster. And it hurts. Here are some techniques to get rid of this nasty ailment. But remember in future: prevention is better than cure- so rub in that lotion!
edit Steps
  • Get out of the sun! Some people think once you're burned it can't get worse. It can and it does! Use the succulent aloe vera plant. Cut it down the length of the leaf and open it, revealing the inner. Rub the clear gelatinous inner over the burned area. Repeat as often as you like. This is better than most bought aloe vera treatments because it's clear and you know what's in it. Use very mild lotion before bed at night to help keep the skin moisturized. Wear loose-fitting cotton clothing that will not irritate the affected areas. Other materials, especially man-made ones like polyester, can rub harshly against the skin and make a burn feel much worse. If it is summer vacation and you are able to stay at home, do so and wear as little clothing as possible to keep it from hurting your skin. But put a soft cotton blanket over the couch or bed to keep your skin from rubbing against upholstery. Use an anti inflammatory like ibuprofen to take the pain out of the burn and help with skin inflammation.

Since 1995, various agencies have recognized the importance of tracking and reporting UV levels to the public as a matter of safety. referring to ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, UV levels consist of three kinds: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. Of these, UV-B is the most dangerous kind to people, increasing the risk of sunburns, cancers, and cataracts. The Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) aboard the Earth Probe spacecraft, tracks ozone depletion as well as determining ultraviolet radiation penetrating the ozone layer to reach the ground. Annual UV levels throughout the world for August 2000 - July 2001. Things to watch for include very high levels of UV exposure during the Southern Hemisphere summer in Australia and southern Africa due to more open and cloud-free areas. Less atmosphere over the Himalayas in Asia account for high UV rates. Desert dust over the Sahara and smoke from fires in Indonesia and Mexico absorb UV radiation, meaning lower UV rates in those areas.

But why so much naval power underway at the same time? What potential world crisis could possibly require more battle groups than were deployed during the recent invasion of Iraq? In past years, when the US has seen fit to “show the flag” or flex its naval muscle, one or two carrier groups have sufficed. Why this global show of power?
The news headlines about the joint-maneuvers in the South China Sea read: “Saber Rattling Unnerves China”, and: “Huge Show of Force Worries Chinese.” But the reality was quite different, and, as we shall see, has grave ramifications for the continuing US military presence in the Persian Gulf; because operation Summer Pulse reflected a high-level Pentagon decision that an unprecedented show of strength was needed to counter what is viewed as a growing threat –– in the particular case of China, because of Peking’s newest Sovremenny-class destroyers recently acquired from Russia.

Outfitters #4 "The Joe Small Saga"
Written and drawn by Dick Troutman
Published by Aweful Books In discussing how comics should expand its horizons to appeal to a wider variety of readers a few months back, someone mentioned to me that with the popularity of Tiger Woods, there should be a proliferation of golf comics. In the best way possible, this title reminded me of that discussion. There's not a super-powered metahuman to be found in Outfitters , it's black and white, and the drawing is sometimes not quite as polished as it could be. Nonetheless, it is a riveting comic book. Outfitters centers on the relationships and petty bickering of a group of employees of a rafting company. The story takes place during the summer, when tourist trade is at its peak, and the squabbling that comes as a result of the presence of Joe Small, a former marine, threatens to destroy the business.

      Sunburn
      Introduction
Date updated: May 18, 2007 Content provided by MayoClinic.com You know sunburn when it happens: red, painful skin that feels hot to the touch. Sunburn usually appears within a few hours after sun exposure and may take from several days to several weeks to fade. Despite the pain and tenderness, many people might not take steps the next time to avoid sunburn, and they'll face possible skin damage as a result. Intense sun exposure that results in sunburn increases your risk of certain complications and related skin diseases. These include dry, wrinkled skin, liver spots, actinic keratoses and skin cancer. You can prevent sunburn and the related skin conditions by protecting your skin whenever you're outdoors, even on cloudy days. If you do get sunburn, several home remedies and treatments can relieve your pain and speed the healing of your skin.

Nanotechnology Prevents Sunburn. What Else Might It Do?
Thursday, February 21st, 2008 8:35 pm Written by: Mary LeFever What’s better than a day at the beach? A day at the beach and not being miserable for the next several days because of sunburn! That’s were the modern miracle of sunscreen comes into play. Did you know many sunscreens are products of nanotechnology ? An advisory statement from the Australian Government’s Therapeutic Goods Administration, Safety of Sunscreens Containing Nanoparticles of Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide describes the properties of these sunscreens. One property is the familiar white color of these compounds, which can be made transparent by reducing the zinc oxide, or ZnO, particle size down to nanoparticles. However, this means the surface area ZnO particles is increased, and that means greater potential for chemical reaction with skin cell proteins, for example. Further, these nanoparticles may be more reactive to UV radiation. On Monday, February 18, 2008, ABC Science Online posted a story, titled

There are two types of ultraviolet rays, UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays, and can cause melanoma in susceptible people. UVB rays, on the other hand, cause sunburn and wrinkling. Skin cancer from sun overexposure is a serious health problem in the United States, affecting almost a million Americans each year. One out of 87 will develop malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, and 7,300 of them will die each year. Fair-skinned people are most susceptible to sunburn, because their skin produces only small amounts of the protective pigment called melanin. People trying to get a tan too quickly in strong sunlight are also more vulnerable to sunburn.

Ultraviolet Rays and the Ozone When the sun comes out, it's time to head outdoors . But, as we all know, too much sun can be a bad thing . This is the reason our parents have been slathering us up with sunscreen since we were babies . Do you know some of the serious dangers from spending a long time under those rays? Check out some of the hazards and a few tips to avoid them.
Ultraviolet Rays and the Ozone Layer
The ozone layer soaks up most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, but how much depends on the time of year and the weather . Thanks to chemicals that aren't environmentally friendly (such as chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons , AKA CFCs), the ozone has thinned in certain areas. In fact, over Antarctica there's a hole three times the size of Australia ! Does this mean more UV rays are making it down to earth? Yes, but if we keep doing our part, the ozone will gradually rebuild itself
