Mission Statement
About Us Master Calendar Newsletter ... Weekly Prayer
Sustainable Agriculture Coordinator: Amanda McMillan
if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday. and the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your desire with good things, and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. Isaiah 58:9-11
Regular Volunteer Opportunities: The Harrisburg Catholic Worker House Mission The Harrisburg Catholic Worker House began in November of 1996, when two men of faith and compassion recognized the need for housing and hospitality for homeless men coming out of prison with drug and alcohol addictions. It operates in conjunction with St. Francis Catholic Church. Basically, it is a laid back place to go and strives to a positive presence in the community. History and Overview Volunteer Opportunities Food Pantry: always needs stocking and cleaning. Groceries are packed up, ready to hand out if neighbors stop by in need of food.

Makepeace uses a variety of non-chemical methods to manage insect pests whenever possible. For example:
    • Late water floods affect many insects in the year of the flood. Emergence of insects is delayed and often synchronous (all individuals hatching over a short period of time rather than spread out over several weeks). Summer floods (mid-May to mid-July) can be used to control grubs, and an in fact is the only method short of bog renovation. Detrashing floods and sanding are important in the management of certain pests. Conservative fertilizing in the early spring prevents pests which thrive on lush greenery.
When necessary, pesticides are used to reduce the variety of insects which are naturally attracted to cranberries. All pesticides must be tested and registered for use with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Certified and licensed applicators must complete yearly training requirements to maintain their license or certification. All of the Makepeace employees who apply pesticides have these annual certifications or licenses. Home site designed by Monderer Design

Welcome!
  • I'm Susie Bright, I live in Santa Cruz, California— I like to cook and sew and throw parties and wear costumes and pretend I'm running my own couture maison.
It's a dreamy escape from my other world If you'd like to stay abreast of my new stories, add my blog to your newsfeed, or sign up for my email updates— use the little widget on the bottom left of this page. The subtitle of my blog, G , is inspired from a quote by Kitty Emeneau, the devoted wife of famous linguist Murray Emeneau. Murray was influential in his field, and Kitty was an exceptional hostess. At one of their parties, a student asked Kitty if she was a behind-the-scenes collaborator on Murray's linguistic epics, in the manner of many "faculty wives" who worked without credit on their husbands' endeavors. "Oh no, dear," Kitty said, with a trill that rivalled any drag queen's. "I'm strictly for his leisure hours!"

New Organic Survey and the Hawaii Food Summit
Harris Interactive has a new poll out on October 8, 2007 about organic food. Those who buy organic food regularly are still a small minority but their numbers are growing. Most people view organic food as safer, better for the environment, healthier and much more expensive. Those that buy organic food believe that organic food tastes better and the cost is worth it.
