During the seventh and eighth centuries, the Swedes were merchant seamen well known for their far-reaching trade. In the ninth century, Nordic Vikings raided and ravaged the European continent as far as the Black and Caspian Seas. During the 11th and 12th centuries, Sweden gradually became a unified Christian kingdom that later included Finland. Queen Margaret of Denmark united all the Nordic lands in the "Kalmar Union" in 1397. Continual tension within the countries and within the union gradually led to open conflict between the Swedes and the Danes in the 15th century. The union's final disintegration in the early 16th century brought on a long-lived rivalry between Norway and Denmark on one side and Sweden and Finland on the other.
In the 16th century, Gustav Vasa fought for an independent Sweden, crushing an attempt to restore the Kalmar Union and laying the foundation for modern Sweden. At the same time, he broke with the Catholic Church and established the Reformation. During the 17th century, after winning wars against Denmark, Russia, and Poland, Sweden-Finland (with scarcely more than 1 million inhabitants) emerged as a great power. Its contributions during the Thirty Years War under Gustav II Adolf (Gustavus Adolphus) determined the political as well as the religious balance of power in Europe. By 1658, Sweden ruled several provinces of Denmark as well as what is now Finland, Ingermanland (in which St. Petersburg is located), Estonia, Latvia, and important coastal towns and other areas of northern Germany.

Home Study Abroad Sweden Pre-History During the Viking Age of the 9th and 10th century, Swedish vikings traveled east setting their mark on the Baltic countries and Russia, whose name probably comes from the Slavic name for these Vikings: Rus. This name is probably derived from Roslagen, and is also reflected in the modern Finnish name for Sweden: Ruotsi. Their routes passed the rivers of Russia down south to Constantinople and southern Europe.
( The three large "royal mounds" at Gamla Uppsala ) Middle Ages During the middle ages, the expansion of Sweden into the northern wilderness of Laplandia and Norrbotten, the Scandinavian peninsula, and present-day Finland continued. Finland was a part of Sweden proper from the early thirteenth century until 1809. In 1389, Norway, Denmark and Sweden were united under a single monarch in a treaty known as the Kalmar Union. After several wars and disputes between these nations, King Gustav I of Sweden (House of Vasa) broke free in 1521 and established a nation state, considered the foundation of modern Sweden. Shortly afterwards he rejected Catholicism and led Sweden to the Protestant Reformation. Gustav I is considered to be Sweden's "Father of the Nation".

A Major Power The 17th century saw the rise of Sweden as one of the Great Powers in Europe, due to successful participation, initiated by King Gustav II Adolph, in the Thirty Years' War and by Charles X Gustav of Sweden in the The Deluge of Poland. Mighty as it was, it crumbled in the 18th century with Imperial Russia taking the reins of northern Europe in the Great Northern War, and finally in 1809 when the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland was created out of the eastern half of Sweden.

Sweden History A reputation for success
Great footballers are now almost as significant an export as Volvo cars and the music of ABBA in Sweden - a nation which has quietly built up an excellent reputation in international football. Host nation
Hosts of the FIFA World Cup in 1958 and the UEFA European Championship in 1992, Sweden has been at the heart of international football for some time, and it is no coincidence that UEFA President Lennart Johansson calls the country home. Footballing pioneers
One of the co-founders of FIFA in 1904, the Swedish Football Association did not officially make the break from the governing body which joined it together with hockey until 1906, but there was much to celebrate on 12 July that year as Sweden won their first international game 11-3 against neighbours Norway. Grim results
However, the mood darkened considerably in the subsequent 1908 Olympic campaign as Sweden lost 12-1 to England and 2-0 to the Netherlands, and things had barely improved by 1913 when Sweden played home and away friendly games against Denmark, losing 8-0 in Copenhagen and 10-0 in Stockholm. Successful campaign
It was a surprise, then, that Sweden fared so well in their first FIFA World Cup campaign in 1934, beating Argentina 3-2 on the way to a 2-1 quarter-final defeat against Germany. Their 1938 campaign was even more impressive as Sweden reached the semi-finals, only to lose out to Hungary.

As they were more successful they became greedy andstole from the towns they traded with. They got a reputation as blood-thirsty conquerers. Vikings were successful because they had strong boats and did not fear death. They were actually religious but had many gods. They believed if they died in battle, they would go to "Valhalla," or "The Hall of the Gods" and gain eternal life. As the Vikings travelled to Christian lands many became converted. In 1008, the Swedish King, Olaf Skötkonung, was baptized as a Christian and this began the end of the Viking Age Middle Ages The Swedish Middle Ages were turbulent. Sweden was a kingdom where the ling was elected. In 1397 Sweden, Norway and Denmark formed the Kalmar Union and elected a common King. In the late Middle Ages, struggle for power between political families and the Danish King Kristian II ended with a fight known as the "Bloodbath of Stockholm"in 1520. Gustav Vasa became king in 1521. Autocracy King Gustav transformed Sweden into an autocratic nation. He made the tax system more efficient but taxes were increased. Farmers had to pay much more. There were rebellions but the King bcame more powerful as he fought off the rebels.

    Book Description
For many Americans, Sweden used to conjure images of Viking raiders and settlers. By contrast, contemporary Sweden is one of the world's most advanced nations in terms of politics, social welfare, gender equality, standard of living, technology, the arts, and participation in regional and global developments. Nordstrom traces the history of Sweden, detailing its prehistory and Viking past.
    About the Author
BYRON NORDSTROM is Professor of History and Scandinavian Studies at Gustavus Adolphus College. He is the author of Dictionary of Scandinavian History and Scandinavia Since 1500, as well as articles about Swedish and Swedish-American history. Christina, Queen of Sweden: The Restless Life of a European Eccentric
    Veronica Buckley
September 2005 Paperback From Publishers Weekly Christina abdicated the throne of Lutheran Sweden in 1654, at age 28, presumably in order to convert to Catholicism. Buckley presents a wide-ranging, entertaining exploration of the dynamics of the queen's decision and unusual life. The author, in her debut, convincingly demonstrates that it wasn't religion that drew Christina to Rome, but a love of art and the ancients. Nor did a true love of philosophy encourage her fateful invitation to Descartes to come to Stockholm, but a restless, clever mind and a belief in her own great potential. Nor, says Buckley, did homosexuality lead her to decline marriage but a larger sexual ambivalence. Attracted to both men and women, yet disgusted by the idea of sex, Christina was most comfortable in masculine garb, critical of women and bitterly aware of the limitations society...

A HISTORY OF THE SWEDISH PEOPLE
Where did the Swedes come from?
In pursuit of a more accurate evaluation of Scandinavian history, some historical questions will have no easy answers. For example, who were the Svear and Daner people who lived in the Baltic region (Denmark and southern Sweden) in the BC era? Who were the Erul people who lived in the Baltic region at the same time? Were they all kin from Thracian warrior tribes?
Fall of Troy . The city was completely devastated, which is verified by the fact that the city was vacant to about 700 BC.
Sicambria about 1150 BC. The Romans would later refer to the inhabitants as Sicambrians. The locals (nomadic Scythians) named these Trojan conquerors the "Iron people", or the Aes in their language. The Aes (also As, Asa, Asen, Aesar, Aesir, Aesire Æsir or Asir ) soon built their famous fortified city Aesgard or Asgard , described as "Troy in the north." Various other sources collaborate this, stating the Trojans landed on the eastern shores with their superior weaponry, and claimed land. The area became known as
