To be selected for officiating at the Professional level of soccer in the U.S. , officials must run 2,600 meters (about 1-3/4 miles) or more in 12 minutes. After the 12-minute run, officials must complete a 50-meter sprint, followed by a 200-meter sprint, another 50-meter sprint and another 200-meter sprint. It is mutually intelligible with two of the other Scandinavian languages, Danish and Norwegian Standard Swedish is the national language that evolved from the Central Swedish dialects in the 19th century and was well-established by the beginning of the 20th century . While distinct regional varieties descended from the older rural dialects still exist, the spoken and written language is uniform and standardized, with a 99% literacy rate among adults. Some of the genuine dialects differ considerably from the standard language in grammar and vocabulary and are not always mutually intelligible with Standard Swedish. These dialects are confined to rural areas and are usually spoken by small numbers of people with low social mobility . Though not facing imminent extinction , such dialects have been in decline during the past century, despite the fact that they are well researched and their use is often encouraged by local authorities.

More than nine million people speak Swedish. It is very similar to two of the other Scandinavian languages, Danish and Norwegian , and a person who understands one of these languages can understand the others quite well. Some other kinds of Swedish are not much similar to the standard language in grammar and vocabulary , and are sometimes hard to understand by people who speak Standard Swedish. These kinds of Swedish are only spoken in small towns, or in the country. Most Swedish people still speak Standard Swedish. Swedish began as a dialect of Old Norse , which was a language that everyone in Scandinavia understood. Around the 12th century it began to become separate from the other dialects. These dialects later became what we today call Icelandic Norwegian Danish and Faroese . Swedish is a Germanic language and share very many words with English , because of the Vikings that invaded England in the 12th Century. It is even more closely related to

Swedish is closely related to, and often mutually intelligible with, Danish and Norwegian . All three diverged from Old Norse about a millennium ago. Swedish, Danish and the Danish language Norwegian (Bokm¥l) are all considered East Scandinavian languages; Swedes usually find it easier to understand Norwegian than Danish. But even if a Swede finds it difficult to understand a Dane it is not necessarily the other way around.

Swedish is closely related to, and usually mutually intelligible with, Danish and Norwegian and to some degree with Faroese Swedish began to evolve as a seperate language from Old Norse in the 9th century , around the same time as Danish and Norwegian Old Swedish is the name for the period from 1225. The earliest texts written in a modified Latin script found so far are fragments of law codes ( Västgötalagen ) dated to 1250. New Swedish was based to large part on the bible translation of 1526. It was not until the late 18th century that it becamse what is now refered to as Modern Swedish Swedish is considered to be a pluricentric language in the sense that several prestige dialects exist with differences chiefly confined to prosody pronunciation and to a lesser degree to vocabulary .
