Originally inhabited by the Helvetians, or Helvetic Celts, the territory comprising modern Switzerland came under Roman rule during the Gallic wars in the 1st century BC and remained a Roman province until the 4th century AD. Under Roman influence, the population reached a high level of civilization and enjoyed a flourishing commerce. Important cities, such as Geneva, Basel, and Zurich, were linked by military roads that also served as trade arteries between Rome and the northern tribes.
After the decline of the Roman Empire, Switzerland was invaded by Germanic tribes from the north and west. Some tribes, such as the Alemanni in central and northeastern Switzerland, and the Burgundians, who ruled western Switzerland, settled there. In 800, the country became part of Charlemagne's empire. It later passed under the dominion of the Holy Roman emperors in the form of small ecclesiastic and temporal holdings subject to imperial sovereignty.
With the opening of a new important north-south trade route across the Alps in the early 13th century, the Empire's rulers began to attach more importance to the remote Swiss mountain valleys, which were granted some degree of autonomy under direct imperial rule. Fearful of the popular disturbances flaring up following the death of the Holy Roman Emperor in 1291, the ruling families from Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden signed a charter to keep public peace and pledging mutual support in upholding autonomous administrative and judicial rule. The anniversary of the charter's signature (August 1, 1291) today is celebrated as Switzerland's National Day.

    Switzerland
    History
The first inhabitants of the region were a Celtic tribe, the Helvetia. The Romans appeared on the scene in 107 BC by way of the St Bernard Pass, but owing to the difficulty of the terrain their conquest of the area was never decisive. They were gradually driven back by the Germanic Altemanni tribe which settled in the 5th century. The territory was united under the Holy Roman Empire in 1032 but central control was never very tight. That was all changed by the Germanic Habsburg family, which became the most powerful dynasty in Central Europe. Habsburg expansion was spearheaded by Rudolph I, who gradually brought the squabbling nobles to heel. Upon Rudolph's death in 1291, local leaders saw a chance to gain independence. Their pact of mutual assistance is seen as the origin of the Swiss Confederation, and their struggles against the Habsburgs is idealised in the familiar legend of William Tell. Encouraged by early successes, the Swiss gradually acquired a taste for territorial expansion themselves and gained independence from the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I in 1499. After a number of military victories, the Swiss finally over-reached themselves when they took on a combined force of French and Venetians in 1515. Realising they could no longer compete against larger powers with better equipment, they renounced expansionist policies and declared their neutrality.

Home Study Abroad Switzerland Early History Switzerland is a federation of relatively autonomous cantons, some of which have a history of confederacy that goes back more than 700 years, arguably putting them among the world's oldest surviving republics. Historically, in 1291, representatives of the three forest cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden signed the Federal Charter. The charter united the involved parties in the struggle against the rule by the Habsburgs, the family then holding the Duchy of Austria in the Holy Roman Empire. At the Battle of Morgarten on November 15, 1315, the Swiss defeated the Habsburg army and secured factual independence as the Swiss Confederation. By 1353, the three original cantons had been joined by the cantons of Glarus and Zug and the city states of Lucerne, Zürich and Berne, forming the "Old Federation" of eight states that persisted during much of the 15th century (although Zürich was expelled from the confederation during the 1440s due to a territorial conflict) and led to a significant increase of power and wealth of the federation, in particular due to the victories over Charles the Bold of Burgundy during the 1470s, and the success of the Swiss mercenaries. The traditional listing order of the cantons of Switzerland reflects this state, listing the eight "Old Cantons" first, with the city states preceding the founding cantons, followed by cantons that joined the federation after 1481, in historical order. The Swiss victory in the Swabian War against the Swabian League of emperor Maximilian I in 1499 amounted to de facto independence from the Holy Roman Empire.

    HISTORY
Originally inhabited by the Helvetians, or Helvetic Celts, the territory comprising modern Switzerland was conquered by Julius Caesar during the Gallic wars and made part of the Roman Empire. It remained a Roman province until the 4th century AD. Under Roman influence, the population reached a high level of civilization and enjoyed a flourishing commerce. Important cities, such as Geneva, Basel, and Zurich, were linked by military roads that also served as trade arteries between Rome and the northern tribes. It later passed under the dominion of the German emperors in the form of small ecclesiastic and temporal holdings subject to imperial sovereignty. In 1291, representatives of the three forest cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden signed the Eternal Alliance. This united them in the struggle against "foreign" rule by the Hapsburgs, who then held the German imperial throne. At the battle of Morganten in 1315, the Swiss defeated the Hapsburg army and secured quasi-independence within the German Empire as the Swiss Confederation. Under the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, European countries recognized Switzerland's independence from the Holy Roman Empire and its neutrality.

Switzerland History Switzerland comes of age
As well as being home to both FIFA and UEFA, Switzerland has one of the longest footballing histories in Europe, with the Swiss Football Association being among the first to be founded outside the British Isles in 1895. Early games
Back in the 1850s, records suggest that Swiss and English students were competing in football matches, and the Swiss national team played its first game on 12 February 1905, losing a friendly game against France by an encouraging 1-0 margin. Fine heritage
Indeed, the early history of Swiss football augured well - Switzerland were footballing silver medallists at the 1924 Olympics, and reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup at their first two attempts - 1934 and 1938 - and were quarter-finalists again whenn they hosted the tournament in 1954. Wily coach
The latter two tournaments saw Switzerland led by wily Austrian coach Karl Rappan who - reasoning that the Swiss did not have the quality of players to dazzle their opponents - developed a defensive formation called the 'verrou' - meaning bolt - which was an early predecessor of the Italian 'catenaccio'. Disappointing precedent
However, Swiss success was not to be sustained in subsequent years. They reached the finals of the 1962 and 1966 World Cups to little effect and set a precedent for disappointing displays in UEFA European Championships when they were knocked out in the first round of the tournament at the first attempt in 1964.

    Zurich Literature
Zurich is a center for German literature. This Web Report will explain how and why Zurich has played such a vital role in the development of German Literature. Journalism As of 1949, Switzerland had more newspapers per person than any other country in the world . Also at this time, 72% of the country was German-speaking . This made the larger cities of Switzerland an opportune place to which many German speaking writers decided to migrate. Writing for newspapers allowed these authors a sure (or secure) source of income by working on their masterpieces. Writing for Zurich newspapers allowed Max Frisch Education Zurich is an intellectual city. The Cantonal University of Zurich was created in 1833 by the joining of the already existing colleges in the city, becoming the first European University founded by a democratic state, not a monarch or the church . This university has supported several authors with both degrees and teaching positions to writers such as Buechner and Bodmer even before it had officially united it colleges.

    Book Description
Switzerland is a remarkable country, half of whose territory lies in the Alps. This is the history of one Swiss alpine village. Raising cattle and making cheese brought modest wealth to its struggling peasants until a destructive Napoleonic invasion brought revolution and poverty. Well-being was slowly restored by a democratic unification of Switzerland. The Alps took on a romantic tourist glow in the Edwardian age and after the disruptions of two world wars the highland farmers and guest house keeps began to prosper.

Paperback Choice William Dunham has written a superb book about the life and amazing achievements of one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. Unlike earlier writings about Euler, Dunham gives crystal clear accounts of how Euler ingeniously proved his most significant results, and how later experts have stood on Euler's broad shoulders. Such a book has long been overdue. It will not need to be done again for a long, long time.Martin Gardner Dunham has done it again! In "Euler: The Master of Us All," he has produced a masterful portrait of one of the most fertile mathematicians of all time. With Dunham's beautiful clarity and wit, we...
