Click thumbnails to view larger images Fateh al-Moudarres (b. 1922 - 1999) Born in Aleppo, Syria, Fateh Moudarres originally taught himself realist techniques before becoming interested in Surrealism. He then studied at the Academia di Belle Arti in Rome from 1954 to 1960 and developed a distinctive style of painting that incorporated both movements. Teaching at the University of Damascus has allowed him to exert a tremendous influence on young Syrian artists. Louay Kayyali (1934-1978) Kayyali was born in Aleppo in 1934, and died there in 1978. He studied decoration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome (1956-61). Kayyali used in his paintings sad and sorrowful faces and characters to express his profound inner feelings, extending his personal tragedies to the realm of his artistic creations. He succeeded in creating links between his own woes and universal suffering, using art as a vehicle to convey the sorrows of other humans.
