HISTORY
Archaeologists have demonstrated that Syria was the center of one of the most ancient civilizations on earth. Around the excavated city of Ebla in northern Syria, discovered in 1975, a great Semitic empire spread from the Red Sea north to Turkey and east to Mesopotamia from 2500 to 2400 B.C. The city of Ebla alone during that time had a population estimated at 260,000. Scholars believe the language of Ebla to be the oldest Semitic language. Syria was occupied successively by Canaanites, Phoenicians, Hebrews, Arameans, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Nabataeans, Byzantines, and, in part, Crusaders before finally coming under the control of the Ottoman Turks. Syria is significant in the history of Christianity; Paul was converted on the road to Damascus and established the first organized Christian Church at Antioch in ancient Syria, from which he left on many of his missionary journeys. Damascus, settled about 2500 B.C., is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It came under Muslim rule in A.D. 636. Immediately thereafter, the city's power and prestige reached its peak, and it became the capital of the Omayyad Empire, which extended from Spain to India from A.D. 661 to A.D. 750, when the Abbasid caliphate was established at Baghdad, Iraq. Damascus became a provincial capital of the Mameluke Empire around 1260. It was largely destroyed in 1400 by Tamerlane, the Mongol conqueror, who removed many of its craftsmen to Samarkand. Rebuilt, it continued to serve as a capital until 1516. In 1517, it fell under Ottoman rule.

History of Syria Often called the Cradle of Civilization and the Gateway to History, Syria has a lot to offer history and the development of civilized man. On the other hand Syria's natural boundaries did nothing for the security of the land?its strategic location also made it vulnerable and many conquerors and attackers were able to conquer Syria. It has been a great crossroad for trade between the Mediterranean and the East; it exported the Alphabet to the West, and has been linked to Religion from the beginning, from the Semitic Deities to the monotheistic faiths. Settling, Agriculture and the Beginning of civilization 9000BC:
This is where civilization began. The development of agriculture in Syria meant settled communities. Tribes and peoples began to prefer agriculture to hunting and with the appearance of bronze and copper tools, agriculture developed quickly. Along with the development in agriculture came a development in trade, as urbanized communities began to engage in various economic activities. Ebla, Mari and the Bronze Age:

History of Syria
French Occupation In 1920 an independent Arab Kingdom of Syria was established under King Faysal of the Hashemite family who later became King of Iraq. However his rule over Syria ended after only a few months following the clash between his Syrian Arab forces and regular French forces at the battle of Maysalun. French troops occupied Syria later that year after the League of Nations put Syria under French mandate. With the fall of France in 1940 Syria came under the control of the Vichy Government until the British and Free French occupied the country in July 1941. Continuing pressure from Syrian nationalist groups forced the French to evacuate their troops in April 1946 leaving the country in the hands of a republican government that had been formed during the mandate.

The latest discoveries from archaeological excavations prove that Syria witnessed human activities more than one million years ago. Evidence of this is found in the northwest parts of Syria. In addition, caves found near Ma'aloula prove that humans existed there about fifty to one-hundred thousand years ago. There are locations in which modern civilizations existed between nine and thirteen thousand years ago. It is difficult to count the people and civilizations that passed through and remained in Syria. However, of those we could count include Stone sculpture, Ein Dara the Sumerians, Acadians, Eblaites, Babylonians, Canaanites, Assyrians, Egyptians, Arameans, Chaldeans, Palmyrians, Persians, Hellinistics, Nebateans, Ghassanides, Romans, Byzantines, Umayyads, Abbassids, Hamdanids, Fatimids, Saljouks, Crusaders, Ayyoubids, Memlouks, Ottomans. As a result of the fusion between various civilizations, not only did Syria develop a wealth of cultural heritage but it also offered modern civilizations a wealth of innovativeness on which they still rely. The main ancient cities in Syria that evoke the story of civilisation and culture at its very beginning are; Mari, Ebla, Ugarit, Amrit, Aphamea, Doura-

7. A Brief History Of Modern Syria
A Brief History of Modern Syria. Syria fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1516 and remained a part of their Ottoman Empire for four centuries.
http://www.nahdatv.net/syria_history.htm
A Brief History of Modern Syria Syria fell to the Ottoman Turks in 1516 and remained a part of their Ottoman Empire for four centuries. During this period, Syria witnessed great deterioration in economic, social, and political fields. In 1916, the Arabs took the opportunity of World War I to revolt against the Turkish rule. Arabs received British military help and promises that after the War ends, Arab countries will be granted full independence. On 6 May 1916, the Ottoman authorities hanged tens of Syrian national leaders in Damascus and Beirut. This day is still celebrated in Syria and Lebanon as the Martyrs' Day. The Arab armies under leadership of Sharif Hussein of Mecca soon achieved victory over the Turks, and in early 1918, Arab and British armies entered Damascus ending 400 years of Ottoman occupation.
Later in 1918, Syria was declared an independent kingdom under King Faisal I, son of Sharif Hussein. However, France and Britain had their own plans in mind. In an agreement known as the Sykes-Picot agreement, they decided to divide the Middle East into French and British 'spheres of influence'. Syria was to be put under French mandate. In early 1920, French troops landed on the Syrian coast, after several battles with poorly equipped Syrian rebels, they managed to get the country under their control. In 1923, the League of Nation officially recognized French mandate over Syria.

History
Middle East History Syria History Greater Syria
Daniel Pipes
Mar 1992
Paperback
From Library Journal
Pipes, director of the Foreign Policy Research Institute, sets out the historical background of the creation of the modern state of Syria and of its political institutions, all of which serve as the foundation to the development of what the author calls Pan-Syrian nationalismthe dream of creating a "Greater Syria" out of today's states of Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan, plus a portion of Turkey. Some may be critical of Pipes as he presents the history of Syria, particularly in his bias as Western-oriented historian. Nevertheless, his contribution here can not be exaggerated, and the coverage given this ideology will be inserted into the analysis of Syrian politics for years to come. This is best read with Patrick Seale's Asad of Syria: The Struggle for the Middle East ( LJ 4/1/89) and Moshe Ma'oz's Asad, The... Warriors of God: Richard the Lionheart and Saladin in the Third Crusade
James Reston
May 2002
Paperback
Book Review Throughout the medieval era, the Holy Land was a fiercely contested battlefield, fought over by huge Muslim and Christian armies, by zealots and assassins. The Third Crusade, spanning five years at the end of the 12th century, was, writes James Reston Jr. in this absorbing account, "Holy War at its most virulent," overseen by two great leaders, the Kurdish sultan Salah ad-Din, or Saladin, and the English king Richard, forevermore known as Lionheart.
