LAUNCESTON LAKES DEVIL ORPHAN PROGRAM Tasmanian Disease Response
Launceston Lakes Wildlife Park is home to nine orphaned devils, all of which have been microchipped and are in healthy condition. This location was selected as the most suitable wildlife park due to their level of interest and the vicinity of the premises to the Animal health Laboratory. The Tasmanian Disease Response was set up in March 2004, to address the devil facial tumour disease (DFTD). There are several components to the DFTD project - diagnosis, field monitoring and management of wild and captive populations. An important part of the captive program which will assist in our understanding of DFTD, includes monitoring young devils that were orphaned when their mothers died of the disease. At this early stage of knowledge, as a representative measure it is necessary to house the orphans separately to all other captive devils. Meet Our Devils
Launceston Lakes Wildlife Park is home to four Male and five Female Devils.

Australia Uncovered Australia Uncovered Meat-eating marsupials: Tasmanian devils and their Quoll relatives The Tasmanian devil got its name from the first settlers in Tasmania who were terrified by its nighttime screams. Tasmanian devils are the world's largest carnivorous marsupial. They are scavengers, dependent upon finding dead animals for food. In this way they help stop the spread of disease. Shy animals, they are not generally aggressive and they avoid open spaces as well as daylight. About the same size as a small dog, they live on their own in burrows, the males joining the females to breed. With an excellent sense of smell but not much speed behind them, they hunt only at night. Quolls are cousins of Tasmanian devils, and are more hunter-like. They mainly eat insects, reptiles, birds and small mammals. Sharp claws and long canine teeth are able to seriously wound.
