Mike Huckabee . . . Blazing a New Trail
Mike Huckabee has risen to the top, and in the process, he's been funny, witty, and sincere. Add these three qualities together and you get "authenticity." Well, guess what the other candidates are trying to be now? -Funny, witty, and sincere.
Exhibit A- Gov. Huckabee released this ad on You Tube Monday. Now Hillary Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, Barak Obama, and John Edwards have followed suit with their own Christmas ads, and it is absolutely no coincidence that Hillary and Giuliani both incorporated their own attempts at being funny.
"Hey, Mike Huckabee did it. Why can't we?"
Once again . . . Mike Huckabee sets the example. Read more.

Tax Reform
from Newt's five Challenges
The United States is creating millions of jobs while the job market in Europe continues to stagnate. Moreover, the United States has a rising productivity rate that is beginning to pull away from the European Union. America's new jobs have been to a large degree higher paying, cleaner, healthier, and more desirable than the jobs they replaced. The insourcing of new jobs is far greater than the outsourcing we hear so much about in political and news media rhetoric. Taxes make a big impact on innovation and adaptation. The United States needs a tax code that favors work, savings, investment, productivity, and creative entrepreneurs. We should abolish the death tax permanently so that entrepreneurs, family farmers, and business owners no longer have to fear losing their life's work to the tax collector.

I would support a purchase tax, if staple food, bread, potatoes, medical care etc were untaxed, in other words the very basics for life. That depends mostly on your definition and application of the word "fair". I would support a purchase tax, if staple food, bread, potatoes, medical care etc were untaxed, in other words the very basics for life. That method would be extremely complicated and not very reliable. For example: is a car a "basics for life"? Clothes? Perhaps we should tax clothes at Bloomingdales, but not Target? A pound of ground beef at the supermarket vs a $35 fillet?
I don't think it is possible to adequately/accurately separate needs from wants to ensure a reasonable progressive tax system. Futher, I think it would be damaging to the economy to heavily tax consumer spending, which is prime mover of the economy. Since your taxes are taken out of your paycheck, you don't see the mony (except on tax day), whereas if you had to think about a 25% sales tax, you'd consider it every time you reached for your wallet to buy something. wolram That method would be extremely complicated and not very reliable. For example: is a car a "basics for life"? Clothes? Perhaps we should tax clothes at Bloomingdales, but not Target? A pound of ground beef at the supermarket vs a $35 fillet?

Tax Reform
Democrats Put Tax Proposals In Context of Systemic Change Far from welcoming the proposals, conservative tax reform activists are livid. "What these guys have done is hijacked the term," fumed Ernest S. Christian, a former Treasury official in the Reagan administration who now heads the Committee for Strategic Tax Reform. "They're trying to take as many of their own perceived constituents off the tax roles as they can, and it's true, if you don't pay taxes, it's simpler. But tax reform is supposed to mean removing barriers to economic growth, making the tax system impact the economy in the least onerous way." Norquist agrees.

Paper Abstract:
Paper Introduction:
Tax reform is a major issue in the upcoming presidential election. The interest of the public was sparked by the campaign of former candidate Steve Forbes, whose rhetoric brought the concept of the flat tax to the forefront of political debate. Both Democratic President Bill Clinton and Republican candidate Bob Dole have publicly voiced their support for a fairer, simpler tax system. Although media attention has centered on the flat tax, legislators have proposed a wide variety of measures aimed at overhauling the country's tax code. The problem with America's current tax system is that it is complex, burdensome, and some insist, unfair. Taxation in the United States has a long history. Unfair taxation was the rallying cry that led to the American Revolution. Tax Reform On January 7, 2005, President George W. Bush announced the establishment of the President's Advisory Panel for Tax Reform , a bipartisan panel to advise on options to reform the United States income tax codes. the Advisory Panel is to submitted a report to the Secretary of the Treasury on November 1, 2005 That report contained revenue-neutral policy options for reforming the Federal Internal Revenue Code. According to the committee, the options should:
  • simplify Federal tax laws to reduce the costs and administrative burdens of compliance with such laws; share the burdens and benefits of the Federal tax structure in an appropriately progressive manner while recognizing the importance of homeownership and charity in American society; and promote long-run economic growth and job creation, and better encourage work effort, saving, and investment, so as to strengthen the competitiveness of the United States in the global marketplace.
The Final Report by the Panel Tax Reform Proposals Tax Related Organzations FairTax - A National Sales tax The FairTax (H.R.25/S.25) is a proposal for changing United States tax laws to replace the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and all federal income taxes (including AMT), payroll taxes (including Social Security and Medicare taxes), corporate taxes, capital gains taxes, gift taxes, and estate taxes with a national retail sales tax, to be levied once at the point of purchase on all new goods and services.

How the U.S. Subsidizes Offshoring of Jobs
by Bob Powell,
Printer page
Email article
I was asked:
The U.S.. in effect, subsidizes companies that offshore. They didn't believe me. Can you help me explain it? My response: I'm sure I don't know the full extent of it, but below are only a few of the ways.
While many characterize the changes that would stop the subsidies as protectionism, it's actually about ending "reverse protectionism." Considering the growing U.S. trade deficit, it's clear that the U.S. does not have a problem with "protectionism" and that, to the contrary, "reverse protectionism" is winning. Ending "reverse protectionism" is not protectionist.
What's somewhat amazing is that these subsidies are so entrenched that they're not even recognized as warping the playing field. The field is so uneven that it has led to an exponentially-increasing trade deficit that will destroy our economy. If foreign countries want access to our markets, they can help pay for the systems that support that access.
