On March 13, 1995 , the Teacher Education Council of Michigan State University unanimously approved the College of Social Science 's request that the undergraduate major in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science be designated as a major for teacher certification. Subsequent to the council's approval, MSU's Academic Council also approved the IDS major for teacher certification. The teacher certification requirements are significant, and students will have to plan their programs of study carefully. Teacher certification will require that IDS students take at least one additional semester of coursework to complete their bachelor's degrees; some students will need to take more than one additional semester. Also, all students who pursue teacher certification will have to apply for concurrent admission to the College of Education and invest an additional year after graduation to complete their teacher education professional development course work and student teaching requirements. Please Note: All students who are pursuing post-baccalaureate teaching certification in RX/Social Studies or who are pursuing a post-baccalaureate teaching endorsement in RX/Social Studies are advised exclusively by the teacher education advisors in the College of Education, 134 Erickson Hall, 517/353-9680.

Beginning Teacher Licensure INTASC , the Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium, is a coalition of state education agencies, higher education institutions, and national educational organizations dedicated to the reform of the education, licensing, and ongoing professional development of teachers. Created in 1987, INTASC's primary constituency is state education officials responsible for teacher licensing, program approval, and professional development. Its work is guided by one basic premise: An effective teacher must be able to integrate content knowledge with pedagogical understanding to assure that all students learn and perform at high levels. AACTE members and staff participate in the Consortium's work at many levels, including standards and assessment development, piloting new products, cosponsorship of academies, and other efforts linking teacher preparation with the states' joint licensure work. Along with INTASC and Alverno College, AACTE is cosponsoring a series of summer academies for teacher educators and others interested in learning about the newly developed portfolio assessment system for beginning teachers in mathematics, science, and English / language arts. April 17, 2006 A recent story in the Detroit News on how state colleges prepare prospective teachers was accompanied by a chart that rated the state's colleges on the teacher certification exam for a period from October 2001 to July 2004. During that time period the number-one school in the state on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification was Calvin College! Calvin had 1,187 of 1,237 students pass the test during that period for a 96% pass rate. Next was the University of Michigan at 95.8%. Kalamazoo College, Michigan State University and Hope College rounded out the top five. The April 16 Detroit News story began thusly: "State officials want to crack down on state colleges to ensure they are preparing future teachers to meet the state and nation's rising education standards." Until recently, the News noted, Michigan didn't report the number of prospective teachers from each university who failed certification exams, and it ignored a federal requirement to identify low-performing teacher colleges.
