Welcome to the Office Odyssey!
Jack in, wire up, drop out! The internet is all about freedom freedom from soft-walled cubicles, freedom from bad coffee, freedom from rules that just don't apply anymore. Why do you need to be in a corporate business park when there's a whole wide, wired world out there? The short answer is that you don't. Two years ago, I cast off my office-bound shackles, packed my life into a backpack and a laptop computer and hit the road. Since then, I've been a digital nomad, traveling around Europe and North America while working my regular job as a technical writer for a software company back in California. So, yes, I'm still in the rat race. It's just that where I'm at, there aren't any other rats. Well, except for my lovely wife, Kristanne, though I’m not sure she'd appreciate the comparison. Want to see what it's all about? Want to feel the excitement of a three hour download over a 9kbps modem connection in Sardinia? Check out the episode guide from our year-long Office Odyssey through Europe and see if there might be some Extreme Telecommuting in your future, too.

The survey, conducted by government-focused IT vendor CDW Government Inc. Only 36 percent of respondents said they've been given the option to telework, and 19 percent said they have used technology to work from home or other places away from the office. Environmental and organizational needs, coupled with evolving technologies, make telecommuting programs look better every day I love my morning commute. Sometimes, there are delays, though, thanks to a pile-up or a clean-up effort. The pile-up, however, is generally just laundry that needs to go into the wash. The clean-up occurs if my cat has decided to demonstrate her eco-concern by recycling her breakfast. (I applaud most recycling efforts, but I question the reusability value of hairballs.) Generally, though, it's about 15 seconds from my bed to my desk. Yep, I'm a telecommuter. I work out of my home office in Sacramento 90 percent of the time; I head to the InfoWorld office in San Francisco, voluntarily, every other Friday.

Pros and Cons of Telecommuting
Telecommute verb ): to work from home, communicating with a central workplace using equipment such as telephones, fax machines, and modems. Telecommute; the word sounds as though it opposes the freedom that a freelance writing life should bring, and is therefore in no way desirable. But in an age when technology and e-commerce is being embraced by so many organisations, the word ‘telecommute’ has come to represent the key to a door of opportunity for freelance writers, more than any other word in the English dictionary before it. But like anything else in this world that sounds good, how much of that should be taken with a pinch of salt? Everything has a cost, so let’s take a look at the pros and cons, from a freelance writer’s perspective, of telecommuting. Pros Anywhere, Anytime Look at the word closely, and immediately you will begin to see what it has going for it. Tele – commute: the ability to “commute” anywhere in the world, without actually leaving the comfort of your own home. In other words, the world truly is your oyster. Being able to work for any company, anywhere in the world, opens up opportunities for freelance writers that were never dreamt of prior to the birth of the Internet. Effectively, it means that there are no longer any barriers to who can work for whom, and thanks to e-mail, communication between the employer and the employee is faster than it has ever been.

Employers around the world are using telework programs to boost productivity and reduce office and real estate costs. And because employees value the flexibility telework gives them to balance their work and home life, telework programs help employers keep valued staff and recruit qualified personnel.
The Oregon Department of Energy supports telework in Oregon, because it conserves fuel, relieves traffic congestion, and improves air quality and because it makes good business sense.

Study: Telecommuting makes work worse for non-telecommuters
By David Chartier Telecommuting has become all the rage over the past half decade for companies that can pull it off with some or all of their employees. About 37 percent of US companies have adopted some kind of flexible work arrangement, and that rate is reportedly growing by 11 percent each year. While the health, life, and work benefits for those who can telecommute are undeniable, a new study says the practice is actually having a negative effect on coworkers who still have to fight morning traffic or jostle for a seat on the subway, also known as "those left behind in the office." ars_technica19:http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080113-study-telecommuting-makes-work-worse-for-non-telecommuters.html Filed under: telecommuting anthropology business "iPod Tax" smacked down in Canada ... :Prev Post Latest News Posts Latest Journal Posts

      There are no "telecommuting jobs".
Lots of people say they want a telecommuting job, but have trouble finding one. Among other reasons we'll get to later, that's because there is no such thing as a "telecommuting job" per se. Telecommuting is not a job. It's just a term that describes a way of conducting business for "regular" jobs that are conducive to it. It's also called teleworking Telecommuting was coined in 1973 by Jack Nilles, a physicist and "the father of telecommuting." According to Webopedia , he coined it "to describe a geographically dispersed office where workers can work at home on a computer and transmit data and documents to a central office via telephone lines."
