Around 40,000 B.C. - Early humans inhabit the southeast Asian region. Around 10,000 B.C. - Distinguished ethnic groups grow in southeast Asia out of differences developed during the past 30 millennia. This assemblage of ethnic groups moves between the Yangtse Valley of central China and the islands of the Indonesian archipelago . The progenitors of present-day Thais at first occupy an area along Dali Lake of what is now Yunnan province in south China. The territory at present designated as Thailand is inhabited by three groups: Negritos (a Negroid race similar to the Australian aborigines or the peoples now found on the island of New Guinea) and Malays in the south and Lawas in the north. The Lawas , though not considered their direct progenitors, are believed to be ancestors of present-day Khmers (or Cambodians) rather than present Thais.

THAI LANGUAGE AND VISITORS COMMENTS
Thai Language
As much as you might like Thailand there remains one significant problem, the language. For us Westerns it can be quite a job to master this. The Thai language is a tonal language, this means that the meaning of a word depends on the tone that you produce while pronouncing the word. There are 5 different tones:
Normal tone: Your average voice sound
High tone: The entire word is pronounced at a high tone
Low tone: The entire word is pronounced at a low tone
Rising tone: Start the word at a low tone and rise towards a high tone
Falling tone: Start at a high tone and end at a low tone
Now you have the great possibility of using one word in 5 ways. Yes that's gonna drive you crazy when you try to master the tones but after a while you start recognizing them. For example the word "Kaao" has 4 different meanings: fishy, news, rice and white. When you finally think you mastered this word you realize there is another word "Kao" that has another 4 meanings: knee, to enter, he/she or animal horn.
In practice you are usually understood depending on the context, if you ask for "kaao" in a restaurant for example the waiter will assume you want rice and not serve you with a newspaper. Somehow the Thais managed to make some words really really confusing though, the word "Glai" pronounced on a mid tone means far. The same word pronounced on a falling tone however means near! This makes asking the question: "Is it far?" rather complicated.

Thailand History:
Early Thailand: Thailand or Siam as it was formerly known is identified as being one of the important bases of ancient civilization in Southeast Asia. Evidence of early inhabitance dating back thousands of years have been found in a number of archaeological sites in the country such as at the Ban Chiang Site in Udon Thani Province . Documented Thai history however begins with the advent of the Dvaravati Kingdom which was the first stable form of government in the region occupying central Thailand. This kingdom was started by the Mon People whose culture was influenced by that of the Khmer people. This resulted in the spread of the Buddhism religion, Khmer art and culture in the empire. The Dvaravati Kingdom lasted between the 9th and 11th centuries.

However, by the 6th century AD thriving agricultural communities were established from as far north as Lamphun to Pattani in Southern Thailand. Theravada Buddhism was flourishing, and probably entered the region around the 2nd or 3rd centuries BC when Indian missionaries were said to have been sent to a land called "Suvarnabhumi". History
The earliest civilisation in Thailand is believed to have been that of the Mons in central Thailand, who brought a Buddhist culture from the Indian subcontinent. In the 12th century, this met a Khmer culture moving from the east, the Sumatran-based Srivijaya culture moving north, and citizens of the Thai state of Nan Chao, in what is now southern China, migrating south. Thai princes created the first Siamese capital in Sukhothai, later centres in Chiang Mai and, notably, Ayuthaya. The Burmese invaded Siam in both the 16th and 18th centuries, capturing Chiang Mai and destroying Ayuthaya. The Thais expelled the Burmese and moved their capital to Thonburi. In 1782, the current Chakri dynasty was founded by King Rama I and the capital was moved across the river to Bangkok. In the 19th century, Siam remained independent by deftly playing off one European power against another. In 1932, a peaceful coup converted the country into a constitutional monarchy, and in 1939 Siam became Thailand. During WW II, the Thai government allowed Japanese troops to occupy Thailand. After the war, Thailand was dominated by the military and experienced more than twenty coups and countercoups interspersed with short-lived experiments with democracy. Democratic elections in 1979 were followed by a long period of stability and prosperity as power shifted from the military to the business elite.

History of Thailand
Historically, the modern Thai trace much of their ancestry to a population that originated in southern China and migrated into Thailand and other parts of southeast Asia during the early 1st millennium CE. The earliest mention of the Thai, as farmers in south China, comes from Chinese records dating back to the sixth century BCE. These early Thai emanated out of the Yunnan region and dispersed into the general area of what is today Thailand.
These Thai peoples arrived in various waves and displaced the earlier Mon and Khmer populations as they settled the region with a large group settling in Thailand during the Sung period of China roughly around 960 CE. Cousins of the Thai, the Lao split off from the early Tai-Kadai peoples and moved into Southeast Asia, mainly Laos, while another kindred people the Shan made their way into Myanmar.
The founding of the Sukhothai kingdom culminated in the emergence of the first Thai nation-state founded in 1238. Various conflicts in the Chinese-dominated region of Nanchao facilitated increased migration of the Thai, especially mercenaries fleeing from the Mongol conquest of China, and helped establish the Thai as a regional power. Successful wars with the Mon helped to establish the kingdom of Lan Na as the Thai increased their hold upon Thailand. The early Thai brought their Buddhist and Chinese traditions, but also assimilated the Indo-Chinese culture of Southeast Asia. (See Thai Chinese for more details)

HISTORY
Southeast Asia has been inhabited for more than half a million years. Recent archaeological studies suggest that by 4000 B.C., communities in what is now Thailand had emerged as centers of early bronze metallurgy. This development, along with the cultivation of wet rice, provided the impetus for social and political organization. Research suggests that these innovations may actually have been transmitted from there to the rest of Asia, including to China. The Thai are related linguistically to groups originating in southern China. Migrations from southern China to Southeast Asia may have occurred in the 6th and 7th centuries. Malay, Mon, and Khmer civilizations flourished in the region prior to the arrival of the ethnic Thai. Thais date the founding of their nation to the 13th century. According to tradition, in 1238, Thai chieftains overthrew their Khmer overlords at Sukhothai and established a Thai kingdom. After its decline, a new Thai kingdom emerged in 1350 on the Chao Praya River. The first ruler of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya, King Rama Thibodi, made two important contributions to Thai history: the establishment and promotion of Theravada Buddhism as the official religion (to differentiate his kingdom from the neighboring Hindu kingdom of Angkor), and the compilation of the Dharmashastra, a legal code based on Hindu sources and traditional Thai custom. The Dharmashastra remained a tool of Thai law until late in the 19th century. Beginning with the Portuguese in the 16th century, Ayutthaya had some contact with the West, but until the 1800s, its relations with neighboring nations, as well as with India and China, were of primary importance.

Thailand Information - History
Thailand means "land of the free", and throughout its 800-year history, Thailand can boast the distinction of being the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized. Its history is divided into five major periods.
Nanchao Period (650-1250 A.D.)
The Thai people founded their kingdom in the southern part of China, which is Yunnan, Kwangsi and Canton today. A great number of people migrated south as far as the Chao Phraya Basin and settled down over the Central Plain under the sovereignty of the Khmer Empire, whose culture they probably accepted. The Thai people founded their independent state of Sukhothai around 1238 A.D., which marks the beginning of the Sukhothai Period.
