Thailand history
Thailand's present extension is the result of the European colonial power's establishment of borders at the turn of the century 1900, even if Thailand as only country in the Southeast Asia never was colonized. Thailand's history is usually divided by the reign of the kingdoms Sukhothai (1238-1419), Ayutthaya (1351-1767) and Bangkok (from 1767), where of the last two are more commonly known as Siam. 1939 the official name changed from Siam to Thailand, but was then changed back to Siam during the period 1945-49. Trough these reforms the royal monocracy was strengthen, but after a coup in 1932 by the military and officials, constitutional monarchy was introduced. Ever since the military have been an important political participant, and military control has been shifted with democratically chosen governments. In 1975 culminated a longer period of dissatisfaction with the military control in student demonstrations, which lead to a period with civil governments and political influence for trade unions and agricultural associations. A bloody military takeover in 1976 stopped this democratic experiment. Despite takeover attempts, civil governments gained steady during the 1980's, but a military coup was performed in 1991. A heavy resistance by the middle class towards the military involvement came in 1992 to culminate in extensive demonstrations. During World War II Thailand was allied with Japan but has after that connected to the western powers. For a long time Thailand was characterized by anti communistic politics and received during the 1950's and 1960's significant financial aid from the US, which was amongst others used to build the country's infrastructure. During the Vietnam War the US had bases in Thailand, from where they did bombings on targets in Laos and Cambodia. In pace with that the socialistic countries in the region have gone over to market economy and no longer poses as a threat, old principles has been abandoned. The current goal is to open countries for Thai investment, and in the mid 1990's Thailand answered for the largest foreign investments in Laos.

Background Thailand (previously known as Siam) has been populated ever since the dawn of civilization in Asia. There are conflicting opinions of the origins of the Thais. It is difficult to determine the type of culture which existed in Thailand before the Christian era, since no written records or chronologies exisbut archeological excavations in the area north of Nakorn Ratchasima indicate that there were people living here over 4000 years ago. A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. In 1767 the Burmese, after several attempts, finally destroyed Ayutthaya. Gen. Phya Tak, or Taksin, quickly rallied the Thai forces, and within a decade he drove the Burmese from the country and established his capital at Thon Buri. General Chakkri, successor (reigned 1782–1809), later known as Rama I, moved the capital from Thon Buri across the river to Bangkok and founded the Chakkri dynasty , thereafter the ruling house of Siam.

5,000 years. Successive migrations of Mons, Khmer and Tai from the north
settled more of the country. By the height of the Khmer kingdom based in
Angkor in the 11 th century, Cambodia controled much of what is now
Thailand. By late in the 13th century, Angkor's power was on the wane, and several
northern chieftans came together to form the first "Thai" kingdom of
Sukhothai. Although the period is heavily romanticized by the Thais
themselves, a visit to Sukhothai itself demonstrates that there was a
significant kingdom established here, capable of erecting huge monuments
which must have required a good sized economic and social base to achieve. Sukhothai flourished and expanded for nearly 200 years, but power eventually
shifted southward to Ayuthaya, which was founded in the mid fourteenth

Spa Thailand - History Archeological discoveries around the northeast hamlet of Ban Chiang suggests that the world's oldest Bronze Age civilization had flourished in Thailand some 5,600 years ago. Successive waves of immigrants, including Mons, Khmers, and Tais gradually entered the land mass known then as Siam, most of whom traveled slowly along fertile river valleys from Southern China. By the 11th and 12th Century, Khmers ruled much of the area from Angkor.
By the early 1200s, the Tais had established small northern city-states in Lanna, Phayao, and Sukhothai. In 1238, two Tai chieftains rebelled against Khmer suzerainty and established the fully independent Thai kingdom in Sukhothai (literally, 'Dawn of Happiness').
