Metadata? Thesauri? Taxonomies? Topic Maps!
Making sense of it all
By: Lars Marius Garshol Affiliation: Development Manager Ontopia Date:
Abstract
To be faced with a document collection and not to be able to find the information you know exists somewhere within it is a problem as old as the existence of document collections. Information Architecture is the discipline dealing with the modern version of this problem: how to organize web sites so that users actually can find what they are looking for. Information architects have so far applied known and well-tried tools from library science to solve this problem, and now topic maps are sailing up as another potential tool for information architects. This raises the question of how topic maps compare with the traditional solutions, and that is the question this paper attempts to address. The paper argues that topic maps go beyond the traditional solutions in the sense that it provides a framework within which they can be represented as they are, but also extended in ways which significantly improve information retrieval.

    What is a thesaurus?
This is a list of software for the development and editing of information retrieval thesauri. These are primarily thesauri which are used to standardise the terms used when indexing and searching for items in a database. An introduction to the principles of thesaurus use is given elsewhere on this site. Thesauri may also be used to expand a search statement to include alternative terms for a single concept when searching unindexed text. The basic requirements for an information retrieval thesaurus are specified in the British and International standards and in the United States national standards , though many of the "thesauri" which are published and in use today do not, unfortunately, comply with these. I have written a separate note about a type of system called a " functions thesaurus Software packages included in this list will be assumed to support the basic pairs of relationships:
    • USE / USE FOR BROADER TERM / NARROWER TERM RELATED TERM / RELATED TERM
and to maintain consistency by ensuring that when one of these relationships is created or deleted between two terms the reciprocal relationship is also created or deleted. They should also be able to display the thesaurus in an alphabetical or hierarchical sequence, and preferably both. Other significant features will be noted in the entry for each package. "Thesauri" which are created automatically, e.g. by the statistical grouping or clustering of terms found in documents, without human intellectual analysis, are outside the scope of this document.

    13. About
While standard thesauri are formalized and highly structured, for some purposes For more on the value of thesauri in a fulltext situation, click here.
    http://www.bayside-indexing.com/Milstead/about.htm
    About Thesauri
    What is a thesaurus?
    • For writers, it is a tool like Roget’s one with words grouped and classified to help select the best word to convey a specific nuance of meaning. For indexers and searchers, it is an information storage and retrieval tool: a listing of words and phrases authorized for use in an indexing system, together with relationships, variants and synonyms, and aids to navigation through the thesaurus.
For more information on what an information retrieval thesaurus is and what it contains, see the American standard for thesauri: National Information Standards Institute. American National Standard Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Thesauri . Bethesda, MD: NISO Press, 1994. (ANSI/NISO Z39.19-1993). While standard thesauri are formalized and highly structured, for some purposes a less complex vocabulary is adequate.
When does my organization need a thesaurus?
    • If it has large files of text and unstructured information, and needs to control and provide access to that information. If it is using a search engine for its information, and has found that the engine does not provide adequate results perhaps too much irrelevant information for some queries, while missing useful information that is in the file for other queries.

    Thesaurus
A thesaurus is a semantic tool used for information retrieval query expansion and indexing , among other purposes. It is basically a selection of the basic vocabulary in a domain supplemented with information about synonyms, homonyms, generic terms, part/whole terms, “associative terms” and other information (e.g. frequency and history of terms in a given database). Peter Marc Roget (1779-1869) produced the first edition of Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases. ( Roget, 1852/1992), which is recognized as the first thesaurus. The structure of this thesaurus was, according to Roget in his introduction, a "verbal classification.. . the same as that which is employed in the various departments of natural history". In the modern sense is the thesaurus a child of information retrieval and information science. The year 1964 is important in the development of modern thesauri for information retrieval. Two thesauri where published: " Euratom-Thesaurus ", the first published thesaurus applying the graphical method to display the paradigmatic relation between descriptors and "

Creator: Aida Slavic Date Issued: Identifier: http://dublincore.org/documents/2000/11/28/thesauri-definition/ Replaces: Not Applicable Is Replaced By: Not Applicable Latest version: http://dublincore.org/documents/thesauri-definition/ Status of document: This is a DCMI Note Description of document: This note summarizes the definition of thesauri and classification as indexing tools and gives the distinction between entity (taxonomic) and bibliographic classification. It also explains the difference between thesauri and classification and the difference between the general classification schemes suggested for DCMES element SUBJECT: LCC, DCC and UDC. This message summarizes the definition of thesauri and classification as indexing tools and gives the distinction between entity (taxonomic) and bibliographic classification. It also explains the difference between thesauri and classification and the difference between the general classification schemes suggested for DCMES element SUBJECT: LCC, DCC and UDC. In my experience, and this ongoing discussion is the proof, the presumption that terminology used within DCMES and DCMES qualifiers would be clearly understood is true only for part of the DC community. Those coming from a library and information studies background don't have a problem understanding the metadata 'jargon', however the rest are struggling to put some meaning behind it.
