What are the NZGLS thesauri?
The Function and Subject elements of the NZGLS metadata standard recommend the use of the Functions of New Zealand (FONZ) and the Subjects of New Zealand (SONZ) thesauri for NZ Government resources. Terms from both these thesauri are combined to describe government information, services and other resources in a consistent manner.
Current version of the thesauri
The current versions of the Subjects of New Zealand (SONZ) and Functions of New Zealand (FONZ) thesauri can be downloaded
Maintenance of the thesauri
The National Library of New Zealand was the Custodian of the NZGLS thesauri until 30 June 2006. The State Services Commission has now taken responsibility for the thesauri back in-house pending the outcome of the NZGLS Review. Changes are made to FONZ and SONZ based on suggestions from users and analysis of search logs. The Thesaurus Advisory Group considers recommendations developed from feedback, which are then approved by the Steward (State Services Commission) before being incorporated into new versions of the thesauri.

Simon Spero ... LCSH/MARC to SKOS Simon and involvement with SKOS alerted me relatively early on to some of the problems that lie in store when thinking of LCSH in terms of a thesaurus. The problem stems from very specific (standardized) notions of what thesauri are. defines broader relationships in thesauri as being transitive. So if a has the broader term b , and b has the broader term c, then you can infer a has the broader term c Now consider the broader relationships (BT for those of you w/ the red books handy, or care to browse authorities.loc.gov If broader relationships are to be considered transitive one is obliged to treat Alcoholic beverages as a broader term for Non-alcoholic cocktails pointed out the problem was recognized by Mary Dykstra soon after LCSH adopted terminology from the thesauri world (BT, NT, RT) in 1986. Her article, LC Subject Headings Disguised as a Thesaurus describes the many difficulties of treating LCSH as a thesaurus. In the example above from LCSH the broader (BT) relationship is used for both hierarchical (IS-A) relationships, as well as part/whole (HAS-A) relationships. According to thesauri folks this is a no-no. LCSH aside, the semantics of broader/narrower have been an

Some of the oldest and best known controlled vocabularies are those used by the United States Library of Congress . For those interested in cataloging images, the Thesaurus of Graphic Materials I: Subject Terms (TGM-I) consists of more than 7,000 thousand terms and numerous cross references for the purpose of indexing topics shown or reflected in pictures. A sample of the 1995 printed edition of the TGM can be viewed here The Thesarus of Graphic Materials II: (TGM II) , is a thesaurus of more than 650 terms to describe Genre and Physical Characteristic Terms. Many newspapers and magazines subscribe to the IPTC (The International Press Telecommunications Council) standards. This was the group responsible for the text message format developed for the teletype environment, and still in use by many news agencies. The IPTC Subject Reference System was developed to allow information providers access to a universal language independant coding system for indicating the subject content of news items. The IPTC has made their complete set of Newscodes available in their NewsML (XML) format that can be downloaded from this site. This includes the IPTC Subject, Scene and Intellectual Genre codes, which are fields included in the IPTC Core Schema that was released in 2004.

Internet/Intranet and Thesauri Branka Kosovac 1. Introduction This report investigates the current use of thesauri for retrieval of networked information, more specifically, for indexing and searching Internet and intranet resources. Its focus is on thesauri regulated by ANSI/NISO Z39.19-1993 [ANSI/NISO 94], i.e. structured controlled vocabularies clearly and systematically identifying the basic semantic relationships (i.e. equivalence, hierarchical, and associative) among terms in natural language that are designed for postcoordination. This complex scope note is necessary in order to distinguish them from:
  • vocabularies identifying synonymy, antonymy, and associative relationships that, for purposes of this report, will be called dictionaries of synonyms; computer-generated lexicons merely indicating co-occurrence of terms in documents that, according to the common usage in literature, will be called automatic thesauri , but should not be confused with automatically generated thesauri controlled vocabularies of precoordinated terms, i.e. subject headings lists;

    Micro-Thesauri
    last modified Created and adapted by Judith Dueck, Manuel Guzman and Bert Verstappen, HURIDOCS 2001 The Micro-Thesauri are a unique and valuable collection of documents developed by HURIDOCS or adapted from various sources. The Micro-thesauri are intended for use in conjunction with the HURIDOCS Standard Formats manuals, and in particular with the HURIDOCS events standard formats: a tool for documenting human rights violations . Also organisations engaged in other types of documentation may want to use and adapt some of the Micro-thesauri. The contents of the Micro-thesauri are based on new developments, earlier work by HURIDOCS, input from members of the HURIDOCS network, and work by other organisations including the United Nations, the International Labour Organisation, the International Organisation for Standardisation, the International Refugee Documentation Network and the Minority Rights Group. Many of the Micro-thesauri, however, have evolved from the use of grassroots NGOs.
