s WE ACCEPT History of Tibet Five hundred years before Buddha Sakyamuni came into this world i.e., circa 1063 B.C., a semi-legendary figure known as Lord Shenrab Miwo reformed the primitive animism of the Shen race and founded the Tibetan Bon religion. According to Bonpo sources there were eighteen Shangshung Kings who ruled Tibet before King Nyatri Tsenpo. Tiwor Sergyi Jhagruchen was the first Shangshung King.
Shangshung, before its decline, was the name of an empire which comprised the whole of Tibet. The empire known as Shangshung Go-Phug-Bar-sum consisted of Kham and Amdo forming the Go or Goor, U and Tsang forming the Bar or Middle, and Guge Stod-Ngari Korsum forming the Phug or Interior.

Tibet: A Legacy of Social Transformation According to numerous Tibetan legends and histories, the first Tibetan king was descended from one of the royal Indian families in power at the time of Siddhartha. Northern India in this era was divided into kingdoms known as mahajanapadas, each ruled independently. From one of these old kingdoms, an Indian prince is said to have fled or been cast out, making his way across the Himalayas and into Tibet where he was given the ruling title of gNya'-khri-btsan-po. Prior to this time, around 247 BC, small kingdoms in Tibet had been vying for power with each other. This warring period in Tibet parallels the Warring States period of China. As you read through the timeline, look for patterns that allow you to determine the course of history that Tibet took. Place that trajectory in a context of what was happening around Tibet. We tend to see Tibet as an isolated place, it was not historically isolated and played an important role in controlling a major part of central Asia. The role of Buddhism was significant in the history of Tibet. From about the 7 th century on, Buddhism was to play an ever increasing role in Tibetan culture and history. From that time until about 300 years ago, Tibet was one of the only cultures to have turned away from militance to become a totally peaceful society. Tibet was to carry a legacy of seeking power and empire building that was shared by many cultures but it was to transform itself into a society where nearly two-thirds of its expenditures went for education in the Buddhist faith. No longer did Tibet seek to control lands but remained hidden from the world is the isolation of the Himalayas.

Tibet - History Tibetan history can be traced thousands of years back. However, the written history only dates back to the 7th century when Songtsan Gampo, the 33rd Tibetan king, sent his minister Sambhota to India to study Sanskrit who on his return invented the present Tibetan script based on Sanskrit. Tibet's history can be divided into four periods The Tsanpo's Period
This period starts from Nyatri Tsanpo, the first of the Tsanpos, in 127 BC (historians differ in view of the date, but this date is taken from the White Annales, a reliable book on Tibetan history) and ends in 842 AD at the death of Lang Dharma, the last of the Tsanpos, who was assassinated by a Buddhist monk owing to Lang Dharma's ruthless persecution of Buddhism. During this period some 42 Tsanpos had ruled over Tibet among which Songtsan Gampo's rule was considered as the zenith. Songtsan Gamoi was an outstanding ruler, he unified Tibet, changed his capital to Lhasa, sent Sambhota to India to study Sanskrit and promulaged a script for the Tibetan on the latter's arrival to Tibet, married Princess Wencheng of the tang Court and Princess Bhrikuti Debi of Nepal, built the Potala and the temple and the temple of Jokhang. The period of Decentralisation
This period began in 842 AD the year of Lang Dharma's assassination, and ended in about 1260 AD, when Pagpa, the Abbot of Sakya monastery, became a vassal of Kublai Khan, the first Emperor of the Yuan Dynasty. During this period a little is known in history except that Tibet vecame decentralized into a number of petty principalities.

Dzungar Mongols attacked Tibet in 1717, killing Lhabzang Khan, sacking monasteries and deposing the sixth Dalai Lama. The Qing troops dispatched to Tibet escorted the newly installed Seventh Dalai Lama and drove Dzungar out of Tibet. Internal unrest rose again causing the Emperor to send his imperial troops to quench the turmoil and to put in place a plan to reform the local administration. After a series of reforms, the local administrative authority fell to the Dalai Lama and the imperial representative official in Tibet, who were equal in status. A Lot Drawing Process was introduced to avoid dispute over the identification of high lamas and their installation has been approved by the central government since 1793. In 1904, a British force invaded Lhasa and remained for 50 days. The Thirteenth Dalai Lama fled to Qinghai. In 1911, the Qing Dynasty collapsed and the Republic of China was founded. The Thirteenth Dalai Lama's title, which was withdrawn by the Qing Dynasty in 1910, was restored by the Republic of China in 1912. Later, the Thirteenth Dalai Lama returned to Lhasa. In 1923, a dispute occurred between the Thirteenth Dalai Lama and the Ninth Panchen Lama. The Panchen Lama fled to Qinghai and died there in 1937. The Chinese government approved the identification of the reincarnations of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama and the Tenth Panchen Lama in 1940 and 1949 respectively.

Tibet's earliest origins are shrouded in vivid myth; according to legend the Tibetan people are the descendants of an unlikely union between a monkey and a female demon. Less fancifully, it is considered that their progenitors may be the Qiang people mentioned in Chinese records around 200 BC. It is not until the C7th however, that Tibetans appear as a distinct ethnicity and their recorded history begins. At this time their image in the region was that of the Huns in Europe. In 607 the 31st king of the Yarlung Empire conquered many of the surroundings small princedoms, raised an army of 1000,000 and became a force to be reckoned with. His son Songtsen Gampo In the early C15th a saintly scholar known as Tsongkhapa disillusioned by the infighting and mysticism that characterized the Shakya, founded a new sect, the Gelukpa In 1911, following the Chinese Revolution ending Qing rule, the Tibetans declared complete independence and expelled all Chinese residents. Over trhe next 40 years, whilst china was embroiled in internal turmoil and the west was busy with its world wars, Tibet enjoyed complete sovereignty, but not internal harmony. The Panchen Lama refused to pay taxes to Lhasa and flex to China, a conservative aristocracy rejected attempts at reform and modernization and the country remained a pious, but impoverished theocracy. The CPP responded by declaring martial law, and set out to rule the region with an iron fist. It liquidated the traditional ruling classes, replacing them with Beijing appointed officials and communist Tibetans. From 1959 Tibet was subject to the same turbulent economic reforms and political movements as the rest of the China. After the rise of Deng Xiaoping in 1979 officials acknowledged past mistakes in Tibet. Monasteries were rebuilt, religious practice permitted provided it stayed out of political and economy stabilized. Liberalization in the 1980s led Tibetans to clamor for even grater political freedom, culminating in mass demonstration in Lhasa in the late 80s and into the 90s, which were harshly suppressed.

History of Tibet
The peaceful ancient land of Tibet, popularly known as the "Roof of the World" was until 1950 a free sovereign country with its own government, culture, language, religion and traditions very distinct from Tibet's neighbouring countries like China, Mongolia, India, Nepal to name the closest. Due to the sheer extreme remoteness of the country's location, geographically and ecologically, Tibet voluntarily remained isolated from the rest of the world for centuries and did not participate in any international affairs or world conferences. Thus when the Chinese Communist armies invaded Tibet in 1950, no international power came to rescue Tibet. Being a peaceful religious country by nature and also due to the young age of the ruler His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Tibet was easily captured in 1959. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India to seek political asylum in 1959. Since the invasion, Tibetan culture and religion have been a target of cruel and systematic destruction throughout Tibet. Tibetan material culture in Tibet was almost exclusively devoted to religion, in which the arts of building, painting and image casting were highly developed.

History of Tibet History of Tibet Tibetans believe that they originated from a monkey and a Raksasi, who married under the order of Avalokiteshvara and gave birth to six children, thus starting the history of Tibet. Mt. Gongpori located in the Shannan Region , is considered to be the place where the couple once lived according to a legend handed down through generations. In fact, according to the recent archeology discoveries in different parts of Tibet, the original inhabitants began to live in the highlands as early as the Palaeolithic Age. They later merged with the Qiang people, who had come the long way from Qinghai and Gansu Provinces, becoming the ancestors of Tibetans. In about 237 BC, a tribe by the Yarlung Tsangpo River was unified by Nyatri Tsenpo, the first king of Tibet. It later grew into an aggressive power in the 7th century that unified all of Tibet into the Tubo Kingdom, marking the beginning of the recorded history of Tibet. Tubo Kingdom (the 7th century-877)
After Songtsen Gampo (617-650), the 33rd Tsenpo of the Yarlong Tribe, established the Tubo Kingdom, he moved the capital to Resa (presently Lhasa), created Tibetan characters and built the first Buddhist chapel in Tibet. To strengthen his power, Songtsen Gampo proposed marriages to the princesses of Nepal and Chinas Tang Dynasty (618-907), the latter of whom is the famous Princess Wencheng. In 641, Princess Wencheng set off from Changan (presently Xian) and arrived in Lhasa after a two-year journey. Together with her were not only the advanced technologies of agriculture, medicine and calendar development, but also Buddhist statues, sutras and the wish to promote Buddhism. Since then more and more Tibetans converted to Buddhism; the indigenous religion of Bon , which had dominated Tibet for nearly one thousand years, began to decline.

China is a unified country with 56 nationalities. As a major member of this big family, the Tibetans are found in large numbers throughout the Tibet Autonomous Region, most parts of Qinghai Province, southern Gansu Province, northwest Sichuan Province and northwest Yunnan Province.
The Audience, painted by Yan Liben of the Tang Dynasty, illustrated the historical fact that Tang Dynasty Emperor Taizong gave an audience to Gar Tongsen
The 10th Bainqen Erdeni presents a hada (auspicous silk scarf) to Chairman Mao This 1,000-year-long written history between the Tibetans and various other nationalities in the big Chinese family is an inalterable fact.
Sketch of the Tibetan Areas During the Qing Dynasty In accordance with the international practice of names being derived from their masters, terms used to mean a nationality, a place and a people of that nationality written in the country's own language and foreign languages-should be confirmed by the government and peoples of that nation. Foreigners should respect the stipulations of that country. Therefore, from the angle of ethnicity, the Tibetans are not part of the Han but from the angle of the Chinese population as a whole, the Tibetans are undoubtedly part of the Chinese. This fairly and accurately tells the historical reality that has existed for more than 700 years, since the Yuan Dynasty.

Author Simon Weisenthal recalls his demoralizing life in a concentration camp and his envy of the dead Germans who have sunflowers marking their graves. At the time he assumed his grave would be a mass one, unmarked and forgotten. Then, one day, a dying Nazi soldier asks Weisenthal for forgiveness for his crimes against the Jews. What would you do? This important book and the provocative question it poses is birthing debates, symposiums, and college courses. The Dalai Lama, Harry Wu, Primo Levi, and others who have witnessed genocide and human tyranny answer Wiesenthal's ultimate question on forgiveness.
