Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest "Whatever you do," our guide Steven cautioned, "do not run if a gorilla charges you." I was standing with three other trekkers at the Ugandan Wildlife Authority office in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. It was 8:20am and Steven was delivering his briefing before we went to track the mountain gorillas. "If you run, the gorilla will know that you're a coward, and he'll chase you." "What happens if he catches you?" I asked. "Just don't run," Steven replied. I tried to envision myself staying calm during a charge. Ideally, you're supposed to crouch down and avert your eyes, showing the gorilla respect. I couldn't picture it. I could only picture a lot of screaming and running. I took a deep breath.

A trek through Nepal is an unforgettable and life-changing experience. For seasoned climbers and fascinated enthusiasts of Nepal, we welcome you to share and participate in the experience with us. We at SherpaTrek have a lot to tell you about, with first-hand accounts from our guide Pema Dorje Sherpa, including an active weblog of our preparations and deployment on our next Nepal trekking experience this fall. SherpaTrek offers exhaustive background content on travel to Nepal, Trekking in Nepal and the sights and sounds you'll encounter there. Pema Dorje Sherpa is instrumental to our behind-the-scenes insight into life in Nepal, and we showcase his accomplishments as a guide and we whole-heartedly recommend his services for your journey to the storied Kingdom of Nepal. It is no simple matter setting out for an excursion to the Mt. Everest base camp in the Sagarmatha National Park or arranging a trek to get up close and personal with Annapurna above Pokhara. You'll find it invaluable learning the right-of-way rules with yaks (hint: yaks win), getting advance warning of the surreal Dasain bloodletting festival, and knowing your way around yetis and land-roaming leeches during the monsoons. We are continually expanding and updating our coverage of Nepal trekking, and the SherpaTrek Weblog will follow all of our new encounters and entertaining stories that our guide Pema Sherpa shares with us.

Trekking in the High Atlas of Morocco
One day, I will visit the Atlas Mountains. My first steps in the Moroccan mountains look very promissing. I did not venture out far, just the internet. Maby you are interested in my findings as well. Have a look! Eh, if you have some personal experiences to add to this page, please don't hesitate to inform me. Like Graham Leach. He writes me about his visit to Morocco: "Back in 1994, I spent nearly 3 wonderful weeks in Morocco with a young Dutch lady from Amsterdam. We inter-railed from Amsterdam via Belgium, France amd Spain, crossing the water to Tangiers. "Tangiers was not a pleasant place, too seedy and dangerous, but the further south we travelled into Morocco, the safer it became and the more intoxicating the place. I loved the country ; the towns and villages were so different from anything seen in Western Europe and the scenery and outdoor life had simply stunning scenery. Best of all, it was so unspoiled. I can not say enough good words about the place. "We walked up Toubkal and took in the scenery from Tangiers/ Fes in the north to south of the Atlas, close to where the Draa valley meet's the Algerian border. In the east we visited Casablanca and Marrakesh." Lucky traveler indeed.

Trekking below Mt Everest
Lukla, Kala Patar and Beyond
Lukla lies in the heart of the Everest trekking area in the Nepali Himalayas. It's here - from Lukla to Kala Patar - that large numbers of trekkers venture into the mountains to begin their treks, sometimes lasting weeks or months in the Himalayas. For many, Lukla is the starting point.

Insanity at Everest
The Crazy Airplane Ride to Lukla
At the bend in the main trekking trail going up into the high Himalayas and Everest area, you can see Lukla quite plainly at one beutiful curve. It's here that Nepali - porters and travelers - stop to look at the airplanes flying in. During the busy season in autumn, one might see several airplanes an hour as they swoop down the mountain vally and make an attempt to land at the Lukla flying strip perched on the side of a mountain. One gets the feeling the Nepalis half expect a plane crash. And when you get a look at where the planes land, you might get that feeling, too, perhaps while you are on the plane!
Kala Patar
Getting there from Lukla
Some go to the Everest Base Camp. But most go to Kala Patar - the mountain at more than 18,000 feet elevation. They fly to Lukla and then head on up the trail.

H eartbreak made our odyssey possible. Sarah and her companion of five years, John, split during the Christmas holiday, and in what seemed like the blink of an eye, we were seated on a plane bound for Buenos Aires. This trip was to be therapeutic for Sarah and by the time it was over, she was transformed from a weepy, fragile companion into a confident, gnarly mountain woman. Who needed John anyway!?
A nd so we began our adventure in Parque Nacional de Los Glaciares, home of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. Until mid-February, when we arrived, high winds and constant storms had kept climbers bouldering or hanging out in funky-looking wooden huts. So far, it had been a bad year for summiting Fitz Roy with only one team of Russians achieving success early in the season. We hadn't come to climb though, we'd come to be stunned visually, and the halo of good weather that descended when we entered the park meant that our wish would come true.
P iedra del Fraile, frail rock: the refugio here provides access to the north face of Fitz Roy. Sheltered from the incessant winds that howl off of the Hielo Sur by an enormous hunk of granite, this campsite, we discovered, is popular on the French trekking circuit. Two separate tour groups arrived within 24 hours of each other with large amounts of luggage hauled in on horseback. Pablo, the soft-spoken caretaker of the Refugio Los Troncos, fretted about where to put them all. In a flash, a city of tents arose on the lawn, ten VE-25's packed in tight formation. The latter arrivals had to deal with sites on the rock's north side, only marginally protected from the winds.

60. Pamirs - The Roof Of The World
However, the most comfortable season for wilderness trekking in the Pamirs is .. trekking in the Tajik Pamirs is about as difficult as it gets.

top TREKKING IN THE PAMIRS Home page Tourism -
What to see
Photo Galleries ... version for printer click on map to enlarge Contribution by Peter Burgess "Why would one wish to travel on foot in this uninhabited mountain region with its hazards of sudden blizzards, avalanches, rockfalls, crevasses, accidents, sunburn, frostbite and all forms of high-altitude illness?" The question was asked rhetorically by the Russian academic and mountaineer Vladimir Ratzek in 1980. Ratzek himself certainly knew the answers, which quickly become apparent to anybody who ventures out into the mountain fastness of the Pamirs.
Despite the lack of apparent interest shown by outsiders, the Tajik Pamirs have played host to a series of illustrious travellers and explorers, notably the famous Buddhist pilgrim-explorer Hsuan Tsang (c.640 AD) and Marco Polo, who describes passing through Ishkashim in c. 1271. The Pamirs lay astride the Silk Road, connecting China to what is now the Middle East, though the actual routeways meandered north and south of the Pamirs, through Ferghana and what is now the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan.
The real heroes, the true pioneers, are of course the Tajiks and Kyrgyz who settled the valleys and high pastures of the Pamirs and withstood the winters year in, year out, for centuries, irrigating the land with thread-like channels running many kilometres across rocky mountain slopes, subsisting off meagre grain harvests and their livestock, building their own houses and making their own clothes, occasionally trading with distant markets in Afghanistan, Kashgar, and Bukhara. These were communities that were truly isolated and dependent on their own ingenuity for their survival. Foreign exploration was focused largely on areas to the north, west and east of the Pamirs and it wasn't until Anglo-Russian military rivalries forced the pace in the mid-nineteenth century that the Pamirs became the focus.
