The applet Triangle and Law of Sines emphasizes that the mathematical symbols denoting lengths, angles and trigonometric functions in a triangle stand for concrete numbers. Furthermore, it illustrates (two versions of) the Law of Sines. Note that the applet does not provide a proof of the latter. For a multimedia proof see The Law of Sines by Math Education and Technology.
The applet is started from the red button in its own window.

Let's see how far you can get with just those I've done so far and a few simple laws (so you can add and subtract and multiply and divide angles). Please note that getting 1/3 of an angle is equivalent to trisecting it, a classic impossible problem! ( Advanced - because the answer depends on solving a cubic. The answer is rather dirty-looking, anyway). back to top And there are as many more as you care to memorize (always a mistake!). The hard part will be in coming up with smaller divisions (such as 5 degrees) without the arithmetic getting infinitely hairy. The author tried for hours and gave up! back to top II. Trig

    An Overview of Trigonometry

Requires Fonts This sheet is meant as a guide to help you review trigonometry. I assume you're already familiar with the basic concepts, and just need to have things cleared up or refreshed; if you've never seen trig before, this sheet will probably only be helpful in conjunction with a class.
    The Basic Idea
Start out by considering a right triangle: that is, a triangle with one 90 o angle. The angle that we care about is one of the other ones, which we'll label with the Greek letter q . (Everyone always labels angles with Greek letters. Why? One loyal reader tells me this is done in honor of Pythagoras.) We're going to look at the sides: the big one, opposite the right angle, we call the hypotenuse . The other two don't have special names, but one is adjacent to q and one is opposite q , so those will do. In the triangle below, for instance, the side opposite q has length 2 (inches, or meters, or whatever). The side adjacent to q has length . The hypotenuse, therefore, must have length 4 by the Pythagorean theorem.

People have ask so here it is: download it! (this file includes fla's and all, just drop index.htm in a browser) PURPOSE: This is a look at trigonometry for practical use in flash actionscript. I am one of those people who could have cared less about trigonometry when it was taught to me in high school. Today I am kicking myself for not paying more attention in math class. WHY: The reason for this refresher is for the purpose of writing/programming actionscript in flash that will fake 3D in a 2D space. This was written for my own notes, but I decided someone else out there might get some use out of it. WARNING: The trigonometry is a review for any one with some common sense and the desire to learn. I do however expect the readers of this material to be knowledgeable about actionscript programming techniques when it comes to writing code for flash. With that said. Expect very little explanation about flash and the code itself. However anyone who considers themselves a flash actionscript guru should be fine. Time for a reality check yet? (You need math to understand trigonometry! You need Colin Moock's book on actionscript to understand scripting techniques in flash.) Last word, reader be ware I am not a writer and this was not written for the the purpose of regenerating these ideas in flash. Think of this material as just a tutorial on the concept of trigonometry and flash, an overview really. Ya, I know. This stuff is not new and for the most part I am just rehashing what I've read in books, examples and all. So don't go thinking I am some super smart guy. The reality is I just read a lot of books. And the people who wrote those books are just people who read a lot of books. And the people who wrote those books are, well, you get the idea. Credit will be giveing to those books at the bottom of this page.

    Spherical Trigonometry
One of the primary concerns in astronomy throughout history was the positioning of the heavenly bodies, for which spherical trigonometry was required. The diagrams below show trihedrals, polyhedra with triangular sides. For astronomy, V is the position of the observer, and PQR are points on a sphere centred at V, the celestial sphere. From 2 dimensional trigonometric relations the upper diagram gives:
From the right hand diagram, and the fact that PQR is perpendicular to VP, we can get:
QR = PQ + PR - 2PQ PR cos A = VQ + VR - 2 VQ VR cos a Simplifying and applying Pythagoras' Theorem gives:
+ 2 PQ PR cos A Which can be simplified further, dividing by (VQ)(VR) using 2 dimensional trigonometrical relations to give the first law of cosines for trihedrals:
Construction of a second trihedral called the polar trihedral from the first gives a different set of relationships between the quantities of the first law, the second law of cosines:
These equations can be used to calculate positions on the celestial sphere, however, the laws can be simplified by consideration of the spherical triangle (see diagram below).

Medieval Muslims made invaluable contributions to the study of mathematics, and their key role is clear from the many terms derived from Arabic. Perhaps the most famous mathematician was Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (ca. 800-ca. 847), author of several treatises of earth-shattering importance. His book On the Calculation with Hindu Numerals , written about 825, was principally responsible for the diffusion of the Indian system of numeration (Arabic numerals) in the Islamic lands and the West. Traditional systems had used different letters of the alphabet to represent numbers or cumbersome Roman numerals, and the new system was far superior, for it allowed people to multiply and divide easily and check their work. The merchant Leonardo Fibonacci of Pisa, who had learned about Arabic numerals in Tunis, wrote a treatise rejecting the abacus in favor of the Arab method of reckoning, and as a result, the system of Hindu-Arabic numeration caught on quickly in Central Italy. By the fourteenth century, Italian merchants and bankers had abandoned the abacus and were doing their calculations using pen and paper, in much the same way we do today.
