Turkey Holidays
Picture the traditional Thanksgiving dinner: a festive table, a loving family, glowing candles and the finest china used only on special occasions. And the centerpiece of the festive meal: the turkey, golden brown, with stuffing and gravy on the side, awaiting the carving knife and whetting the appetites of all those present. This centerpiece scene, emerges from both holiday traditions and a unique world history of a native American god bird.
Wild Turkey Origins
There are two types of wild turkey, both of which are strong fliers (up to 55 mph for short distances) and among the fastest runners (15-30 mph). One type is originally from Yucatan and Guatemala (Agriocharis ocellata; 47 family - Phasianidae) and the other is from Mexico and the US (Meleagris gallopavo; family -Phasianidae). From the fossil record they were once much more widespread. They diverged from pheasants 11 million years ago and were likely "distributed continuously from middle latitudes of North America to northern South America during the Pleistocene". Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), or "huexolotlin" in the ancient language of the Aztecs in Mexico was one of the first animals in the Americas to be domesticated. The Aztecs in Mexico considered "huexolotlin" so important, they dedicated two religious festivals a year to the birds. During the celebration, turkey eggshells which had been saved for months were strewn upon the streets to honor the god who favored them with such a plentiful source of food. The turkey was also one of the manifestations of Tezcatlipoca, the trickster god, who had been elevated to the highest position in the Aztec polytheistic pantheon. All year round, it was not uncommon for over 1000 turkeys a day to be sold in a busy Aztec market. There is evidence that turkeys and were kept in pens for their plumage. The natives used turkey feathers for necklaces, head adornments, and arrows.

History of Turkeys in the London Area
  • First "Why are the turkeys coming?". They are coming because we feed them 20 pounds of corn every day while the snow is on the ground. Also it helps that our back yard abuts Dingman Creek, where they live with the deer, coyotes, rabbits and racoons. Secondly, where did they come from? Read the following exerpt from an article "Lets Talk Turkey" written by Karen Auzins for the "Cardinal", The quarterly publication of the McIlwraith Field Naturalists of London Inc.
Male Turkeys in Full Bloom Most of my turkeys came from the original release site in the Simcoe area and the few banded ones came from Tennessee. Normal release quantities are 12 hens and 5 males but a few extra were released here. On average, a hen will successfully raise 4 poults (baby turkeys) so for us to see 50 birds a year after the release was normal. When first introduced the populations grow rapidly and then seem to taper off thus looking after their own population control........ HOME WEBCAM CONTACT US TOP

[E-mail] [Home] [About Turkey] [Music] ... Mustafa Kemal Ataturk Turkish States before Ottoman State/Empire
Throughout history the Turks have established numerous states in different geographical areas on the continents of Asia, Europe and Africa. Therefore, they encountered different cultures, they influenced these cultures and were influenced by them.
It is accepted that Turkish political history in Asia starts with the Huns. The Hun State , which first appeared in the third century B.C., became a significant and powerful state during the reign of its founder, Mete Khan, and passed through fundamental changes, economically and socially, due to her relations with China. Having a defined and certain strategy, Mete first of all defeated the Mongolians and then the Yuechis, and thereafter, having taken the western gates and trade routes of China under his control, he gained significant economic power. This systematic expansion policy resulted in the seizure of Eastern Turkestan, the wheat and provisions granary, by the Huns.
After the collapse of the Asian Hun State, a new state called the Göktürk was founded by the Turkish tribes who adopted the traditions and administrative experiences of the Huns. The Göktürk State (552-740) is the second great state established by the Turks. Unlike the Huns, the Göktürks attached particular importance to urbanization, realized agricultural reforms and seed improvement and "sagacity" was the foremost concept.

Turkey's EU aspirations are further jeopardised by an unhappy human rights record, a shaky economy and the ongoing stoush with the Kurds. Turkey's sparsely populated eastern and south-eastern regions are home to 6 million Kurds; 4 million Kurds live elsewhere throughout the country, more or less integrated into Turkish society.

Home Study Abroad Turkey In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Ottoman Empire was among the world's most powerful political entities, with the powers of eastern Europe constantly threatened by its steady advance through the Balkans and the southern part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Its navy was also a powerful force in the Mediterranean. On several occasions, the Ottoman army invaded central Europe, laying siege to Vienna in 1529 and again in 1683 in an attempt to conquer the Habsburg domain, and was finally repulsed only by grand coalitions of European powers at sea and on land. By 18 September 1922 the occupying armies were repelled and the country saw the birth of a Turkish state. On 1 November 1922 the Turkish Grand National Assembly formally abolished the office of the Sultan, ending 631 years of Ottoman rule. In 1923 the Treaty of Lausanne recognized the sovereignty of the new Republic of Turkey. Kemal Pasha became the Republic's first President and instituted far reaching reforms with the aim of modernizing the new Republic from the remnants of its Ottoman past. According to the Law on Family Names, the Turkish Grand Assembly presented Mustafa Kemal with the honorific name "Atatürk" (meaning Father of the Turks) in 1934. Turkey entered World War II on the Allied side in the latter stages of the war and became a charter member of the United Nations. Difficulties faced by Greece after World War II in quelling a communist rebellion and demands by the Soviet Union for military bases in the Turkish Straits prompted the United States to declare the Truman Doctrine in 1947. The doctrine enunciated American intentions to guarantee the security of Turkey and Greece and resulted in large scale U.S. military and economic support.

The History of Turkey
The history of Turkey reports of human inhabitation as early as 7,500 BC. Turkey is located in the region where the meeting points of the three continents Asia, Africa and Europe converge. In the early history, this region was called Anatolia, which is one of the oldest and continually inhabited regions on the globe. This region has been serving as the battleground for foreign powers since early times. Hittites was the earliest tribe that ruled the area from 18th through the 13th century BC. Succeeding them, the Phrygians and Cimmerians ruled the place. In 546 BC, Cyrus the Great led the Persians into Anatolia, who was eventually driven out by Alexander the Great in 334 BC. Thus, in 334 BC Anatolia came under the rule of Alexander the Great. Subsequently, Anatolia was divided into a number of small Hellenistic Kingdoms namely Bithynia, Cappadocia, Pergamum, and Pontus. In the first century BC, all these kingdoms fell into the hands of Rome. In 130 BC, the Romans incorporated Anatolia as one of the provinces of Asia, controlled from Ephesus. In 324 AD, Constantine I, the Roman emperor made Constantinople (now known as Istanbul) the capital of the Roman Empire, which subsequently became the capital of Byzantine Empire. Seljuks, a group of Central Asiatic Turks conquered Baghdad in 1055 and established a Middle Eastern and Anatolian Empire. On the break of the empire during Mongol invasion, one of the local powers namely the Ottoman dynasty came to prominence even stretching from the northwestern Anatolia and capturing Constantinople in 1453. With this, Constantinople fell and Istanbul was born. Suleyman the Magnificent ruled the Ottoman Empire between 1520 and 1566 controlling a huge and powerful empire pushing the glory of the empire to forefront. After a flourishing time, the Ottoman Empire collapsed in the 18th and the 19th centuries.

http://www.deepnature.com/eng/turkey_history.htm
HISTORY OF TURKEY The history of Turkey tells of a 10,000 year-old civilization. Anatolia is a melting pot where cultures from Sumer, Babylon and Assyria interacted for centuries with peoples such as the Hattis, Hittites, Hourrites. The result was a unique Anatolian civilization which has long inspired the thoughts and legends of the West. The Ancient Bronze Age witnessed the establishment of the first independent city states. At that time, the center and southeast of Anatolia were inhabited by the indigenous Hattis.
The most spectacular finding from this time are those of Alaca Höyük in the Kizilirmak region and of Horoztepe near Tokat, in the Black Sea region. They are contemporary with the royal tombs of Mycenae in Greece. THE LEGENDARY TROY Troy was founded 3000 BC, and played a major role in the importation of tin, vital for the production of bronze. THE HITTITES ARRIVE The Hittites arrived in Anatolia towards the second millenium BC. They absorbed much of the Babylonian civilization and long enjoyed a monopoly of iron Asia. This, combined with the use of the chariot, gave the Hittites a military superiority over Egypt and other Mesopotamian states. The victorious raid against Babylon in 1590 BC was the climax of the first Hittite empire, followed by a period of decline. Then, in the first half of the fourteenth century, came a revival of power. This second era saw a Hittite hegemony stretching from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf.

History
It is a know fact the silk industry has played a significant part in the lives of many a nation since the times of Antiquity. This industry has acquired more importance as it reached our day. Silk and spices deriving from the Far East always enjoyed a remarkable role in international relations. Silk has also enabled the west to get acquainted with the East. This was initiated primarily by merchants traveling in both directions. The Egyptians followed by the Romans, purchased silk from the Chinese and it began to be used by Westerners as early as 753 B.C. Studies reveal that it was the monks who first brought cocoons to Byzantium from China in the year 555 A.D.; the cocoon trade spread from Byzantium to Greece and from there to Italy, Spain and France from the 7th Century onward. The historical silk road This ancient trade route linking China to the West originated in Xi'an; it was actually a caravan route and played an important part in the exchange of both goods and thought between the two great civilizations of the time, China and Rome. The most important point of convergence of this 6.400 km long road was Kashgar.
