Ethical Society, Unitarianism, Trinitarianism
Irene and I have applied to join the Ethical Society , which is sort of an engineers' religion.
"Deed before creed" is the motto; what we believe is less important to us than our actions and their consequences in the world.
...each of those religions, these value systems, have two principles they share in common: tzedakah and tikkun olam , and the two principles started with monotheism and the Jews. Tzedakah means generally that we must treat each other as brother and sister. We should show one another respect and dignity because we are like things; we are human beings in a world that has nothing else like us, and we ought to treat each other with love, charity, use your own words. And the second principle is, "Well, what do you do with this relationship?" Well, we don't know exactly how we got here and why we are here, etc. etc.; that's for minds larger than our own. But we do know that we are like kinds, and we should work together to make this as good an experience as possible: tikkun olam -"let us repair the universe." Now, Islam believes that, and Buddhism that has no god believes it. Every Ethical Humanist I ever met believes it. Those two principles: We're supposed to love one another and we're supposed to work together to make the experience better. That's all the religion you need, really, to make a success of this planet...

Week 5, Religion: Unitarianism Pt. 1, or Maia M****, Where The Fuck Are You?
The old joke:
"What do you get when you cross a Mormon with a Unitarian Universalist? Someone who rings your doorbell for no good reason." Also:
Three children were talking about their religions.
"I'm a Catholic," said one, "And our symbol is the cross."
"I'm Jewish," said the second, "And our symbol is the Star of David."
The third child said, "I'm a Unitarian Universalist and our symbol is a candle in a cocktail glass!" And finally:
A Unitarian Universalist dies, and on the way to the afterlife encounters a fork in the road with two options: "to heaven" and "to a discussion of heaven." Without pausing, the UU heads right to the discussion of heaven. Diminishing returns, yes.

    How Unitarianism could save Christianity
September 27, 2007 by Jerome M some Christians blame the queers and unwed mothers  for this instead of their own doctrines, which seem completely devoid of the love Jesus lived and taught. Saddling followers with fear, judgement, and guilt is not the way to keep them coming back. A recent study in The Christian Post shows just how far the disintegration has advanced. The following passages jumped out at me: Only 3 percent of 16- to 29-year-olds who are not of the Christian faith express favorable views of evangelicals. In the previous generation, 25 percent of young people had positive associations toward evangelicals. Common negative perceptions among non-Christians is that present-day Christianity is judgmental (87 percent), hypocritical (85 percent), old-fashioned (78 percent), and too involved in politics (75 percent).

    "Unitarianism" Sermon by Leland Bond-Upson
given at UUs of Petaluma, October 6, 2002 Introduction We don't hear about Unitarianism much these days-only about Unitarian-Universalism. We run into the occasional Unitarian in the history books, or when used by a non-UU, and which, when we hear it, seems somehow jarring, and wrong, and think the usage quaint, and not-quite-with-it. In our denomination's publicity, I have seen famous Unitarians described as Unitarian Universalists, which they most certainly were not. When in the company of UUs, if I describe myself as a Unitarian, I am corrected-"Unitarian Universalist !" I confess I sometimes do it now just for the shock value. Since the merger in 1961 of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America, it seems we have a new religion -Unitarian Universalism-which, in my view, submerges two distinct outlooks and traditions into a kind of mush. The merger was done to save Universalism, and to strengthen Unitarianism. But the mushy merger has been a clear detriment to the Universalists-and to the Unitarians as well, although I don't think they realize it. I will have more to say about this when we talk about Universalism, next month. Wood block print by Deborah Bond-Upson History Let us begin near the beginning, in the ferment of the revolutionary ideas let loose by the Reformation and its antecedents. You will recall that the New Learning of the Renaissance, combined with the corruption of the Catholic Church gave birth to the Protestant Reformation. Suddenly it was possible for ordinary people-not just theologians and scholars-to 'think outside the box.'

Order from the UUA Bookstore, 800-215-9076, www.uua.org/bookstore. At a time when the world seems to grow ever smaller, it may be some comfort to note that Unitarian Universalism's reach grows ever larger. Liberal religion and its message of hope, courage, and freedom have taken root in cultures as far away from Boston as Latin America, Ghana, and India. The varieties of liberal religious experiences prove that freedom of belief and conscience know no borders. Yet we often forget that the United States is neither the only locus of our religious past nor the single engine of its future. The following books provide snapshots of our faith on a global scale, and offer a timely reminder that North American Unitarian Universalism is only one strand in our interdependent web.

When Unitarian Universalists think of ideals like the separation of church and state or the interdependent web of all existence, we imagine principles that enhance the rights of all human beings. It can be something of a rude awakening to see how versions of these very principles, held by devoted religious liberals, have been used to defend something as odious as slavery. A new book, Unitarianism in the Antebellum South: The Other Invisible Institution by John Allen Macaulay (University of Alabama Press, 2001; $32.95), tells the story of Unitarianism's surprising influence in America's Southern states in the first half of the nineteenth century. One of the central characters in this story, the Rev. Samuel Gilman (1791-1858), served for almost forty years in Charleston, South Carolina, where he walked a fine line between promoting Unitarianism throughout the South and trying to distance Southern Unitarians from the growing wave of abolitionism among Unitarians in the North. Gilman arrived in Charleston in 1819 with his wife Caroline, who edited one of America's first periodicals for children. Gilman was called to serve the liberal Archdale Street Church, founded in 1817. He launched the Charleston Unitarian Book and Tract Society, "the first organization in the United States for the circulation of Unitarian literature," in 1821, four years before the establishment of the American Unitarian Association. Within ten years, he helped establish Unitarian churches in Augusta and Savannah, Georgia. Unitarian churches emerged in Richmond, Virginia, and Mobile, Alabama, and the "Stranger's Church" in New Orleans evolved into a Unitarian church, too.

    Unitarian Universalist Beliefs
Many people think that Unitarian Universalists, or UUs , believe anything they want. This is not true. Although we do not have an imposed dogma or creed, we have a list of principles [ 1] that we believe and try to adhere to. They are :
    • The inherent worth and dignity of every person
    • Justice, equity and compassion in all human relations
    • Acceptance of one another and encouragement of spiritual growth
    • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning
    • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process
    • The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all
    • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part
Us are encouraged to seek their own answers to those tough, serious questions about the divine, life, and death. As long as one agrees with the above principles, any religious beliefs will be accepted, respected, and most likely celebrated!

Why I Am Not a Puritan, Part 4: Unitarianism Takes the Stage
    Introduction
Part 1: Is 'Americanism' a Religion?

Part 2: 'American Zionism' Takes Root
    ...
    Part 3: The Resistance Begins

If you were to ask 100 people to give you a thumbnail sketch of the spiritual history of America, my guess is that you would be fortunate to find one person who would even attempt to do so.
I am not the only one who would beg to differ. I would argue that spiritual/religious issues underlie virtually everything that happens in local communities and in our nation. People act out of their deepest-held beliefs, even if they do so in an inconsistent manner.
    Mark Noll
, for one, has shown in both and The Civil War As a Theological Crisis that the devastating Civil War was, at its core, a theological war, with deeply held differences in biblical interpretation making war virtually inevitable. Ted Turner , in his movie, Gods and Generals , spent millions of dollars in a tedious film (in which he appeared) to show the evangelical Christian zeal of the Southern generals and troops. One wonders if the ultimate purpose of the movie was to illustrate his Southern, post-Christian lament,
So, what does this have to do with Puritanism and Anti-Puritanism? Well, everything, actually.

Jonathan Rowe on May 26th 2006 digg_skin = 'compact'; Okay, I know that the DaVinci Code makes a lot of ahistorical claims, but one area where the DVC may be getting a bad rap is in its assertion about early disputes among Christians regarding whether Jesus was God, or something less than God. Some are absolutely outraged that the DVC asserts early Christians disputed the doctrine of Jesus Godhood. But for a long time in Christendom, especially during the Founding, theological Unitarianism has had a rich dissident history. Indeed, anyone who follows my research on the Founding and Religion knows that our key Whig Founding Fathers were theological Unitarians, as were Newton and likely Locke, Milton and some others. , John Adams appeared to believe the vote was close as well, and joked about it in the following manner: John Adams to Benjamin Rush, June 12, 1812. The Faiths of the Founding Fathers , surprised me: Unitarians asserted that they had restored the original Christian belief that Jesus was in some way commissioned or sent by God but that he remained subordinate to him.

The term seems to have originated about 1570, was used in a decree of the Diet held in 1600 at Lecsfalva in Transylvania , and received official ecclesiastic sanction in 1638. It supplanted the various designations of anti-Trinitarians Arians Racovians , and Socinians . In England the name first appears in 1682. It became frequent in the United States from 1815, although it was received unfavourably by some anti-Trinitarians , and omitted in their official titles by some congregations whose religious position it defined . The explanation of this opposition is to be found in the reluctance of the parties concerned to lay stress on any doctrinal affirmation Historical associations account for the name Presbyerians , frequently applied to Unitarians in the British Isles , and Unitarian Congregationalists , used in the United States . No definite standard of belief is recognized in the denomination and no doctrinal tests are laid down as a condition of fellowship. The co-operation of all
