More government spending on city centres needed?
Pretty much everyone hates suburban sprawl. Politicians rail against it and vow to control it, and environmentalists egg them on. City bohemians despise their bourgeois neighbours in the suburbs. Even the bourgeois neighbours, who like their views of the surrounding countryside, feel aggrieved or guilty as they drive their cars into work in the morning and see green fields given over to other people’s housing development. Surely it would be better for people to live near the centres of cities, and closer to their workplaces. They would have shorter commutes, and cheaper more frequent public transport. They would cause less car pollution, and waste less land on suburban roads and car parks. Increased population density in the city might even result in better facilities there; better restaurants, sports centres etc. There’s only one problem.

UWM HOSTS CONFERENCE ON
URBAN SPRAWL AND MILWAUKEE GROWTH
MILWAUKEE Two experts on urban social environments and the spread of suburbia are slated for the second annual UWM Urban Initiatives Conference, "Milwaukee's Future in an Era of Urban Sprawl: Is Smart Growth Possible?" The conference, which will be held June 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the UWM Union, is organized by the Urban Initiatives Council and the Center for Urban Initiatives and Research. Richard Moe , president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will discuss the use of historic preservation as a tool for revitalizing cities in his address, "The Great Sprawl Debate." Moe, who authored a book on the same topic, Changing Places: Rebuilding Community in the Age of Sprawl , will also address the causes of urban decline. He is a former chief of staff for Vice President Walter Mondale during the Carter administration. Under his direction, the National Trust has become an outspoken and effective advocate of controlling urban spawl. Professor john a. powell

Urban sprawl (also: suburban sprawl ), a term with pejorative implication, refers to the rapid and expansive growth of a greater metropolitan area , traditionally suburbs (or exurbs ) over a large area. "Urban sprawl" may be a loaded term and it can have negative connotations. The phrase has been used by some critics to describe almost any urban growth, but this usage is misleading.

      Characteristics
Sprawl is characterized by several land use patterns which usually occur in unison: edit
      Single-use zoning
Commercial, residential , and industrial areas are separated from one another. Large tracts of land are devoted to the same type of development. Zoning areas are segregated from one another by roads , green space, or other barriers. As a result, the places where people live, work, shop, and recreate are necessarily far apart from one another. edit
      Low-density land use
Sprawl consumes much more land than traditional urban developments because new developments are of low density. The exact definition of "low density" is arguable, but a common example is that of single family homes, as opposed to apartments. Buildings usually have fewer stories and are spaced further apart, separated by

    Suburban Sprawl
Maybe it's living in the west my whole life, most of the time in relatively unpopulated areas compared to major cities, but I'm finding it hard to get too worked up over this: Suburban Cowboys, by Ben Adler, The American Prospect : You know your conservative pet cause has arrived when it gets an event at the Heritage Foundation. Every kooky right-wing crusade, from denying global warming to teaching creationism in public schools, will eventually have its moment in the sun at the conservative think tank. So it is no surprise that the honor was recently granted to a growing group of reactionaries who think that America's sprawling, post-war development pattern is actually a good thing and that the nascent anti-sprawl "smart growth" movement needs to be stopped. These pro-sprawl views have begun to find their voice on the op-ed pages and, on May 22nd, with a discussion at Heritage modestly titled "War on the Dream: How Anti-Sprawl Policy Threatens the Quality of Life." The event took its name from the title of a new book by Wendell Cox, a public policy consultant (critics call him a "hired gun for the roadway industry") and visiting fellow at Heritage. Cox was introduced by another Heritage fellow, Ron Utt, who is perhaps best known as the man who led the Reagan administration's privatization efforts. ...

Using Real Data for Science and Math: Urban Sprawl and its Impacts on Rural America
In many regions, people are moving away from the central cities in major metropolitan areas into suburban and rural communities. This migration consumes a tremendous amount of land resources, particularly prime agricultural land. It also increases commuting times, energy use, and the potential for spreading air and water pollution problems. References at the end of this mini-project will give you background on the problem. MINI-PROJECT This mini-project includes: 1. Doing some background reading on the nature of the problem of sprawl and its possible solutions. 2. Using the maps we have created to visualize the rate of land use change in Medina County. 3.Using the auditor's dataset and data from the U.S. Census to quantify the rate of change in population and land use in the county by creating tables and graphs in Excel. 4. Making some simple forecasts using Microsoft Excel to create a Line and Curve of Best Fit.

What is Urban Sprawl? Urban Sprawl is low density, automobile dependent development beyond the edge of service and employment areas. It is ubiquitous and its effects are impacting the quality of life in every region of America, in our large cities and small towns. Urban sprawl can be measured using the U-Index (Human Use Index). The U-Index is a measure of the total watershed area that is covered by either urban or agricultural lands. Based upon the information provided by the U-Index, the greatest areas of urbanization in the Mid-Atlantic region occur in the Chesapeake Bay area. Why should we be concerned?

Definition (english only) The physical pattern of low-density expansion of large urban areas under market conditions into the surrounding agricultural areas. Sprawl lies in advance of the principal lines of urban growth and implies little planning control of land subdivision. Development is patchy, scattered and strung out, with a tendency to discontinuity because it leap-frogs over some areas, leaving agricultural enclaves.
