Urban Sprawl Agriculture Are Working Landscapes Desirable? Natural Resources Economic Development ... Tourism
Many people who live in a city have the dream of moving to the country. They might desire peace and quiet, or decreased traffic, pollution, and perceived crime. For these reasons and more, people are moving out of city centers and into the outlying areas. As these people move out, businesses follow. After all, people need grocery stores and gas stations to satisfy their convenience-oriented needs. As these newer communities grow, housing and business developments consume landscapes while inner city areas become more and more deserted. Some people believe we should build a new business on a vacant lot in a city before sacrificing more land on the edge of town. In fact, there are some cities fighting for this to become a law. Choosing Our Neighborhoods
How Sprawl Starts

The concern is urban sprawl. Urban sprawl happens when houses and businesses leap frog over each other. An example might be a person who buys a ten acres of land in the country not far from a town or city and wants to build a house on it.

Our Land, Our Literature is an educational resource that explores Indiana s rich heritage of writing, from the 1820s to the present.
http://www.bsu.edu/ourlandourlit/Environment/Issues/Urban_Sprawl.html
Special Notice Urban Sprawl Sprawl is a major cause of habitat and wetland destruction in Indiana. It has been a continuous problem since the late 1800s, when industrialization and exponential population increases expanded the borders of Indiana's cities. In the twentieth century, the problem grew worse when city-dwellers began to move from urban to rural areas. In housing patterns of recent years, even greater responsibility for sprawl has fallen upon the commuter who wants his or her own five-acre haven in the country. In order to support the number of people moving from the city to the country, Indiana farm fields have been transformed into housing developments, schools, and shopping centers. Forests have been further fragmented as 5,000-square-foot homes have been built in the middle of "unused" woods. One result of the sprawl is that Hoosiers, like other Americans, have become utterly dependent upon the automobile to reach their destinations. Traffic has increased, and with the added time spent behind the wheel has come an increase in air pollution Another result of sprawl is the

or Why Do Home Builders Support Urban Sprawl? by
Bob Rackleff, Leon County (FL) Commissioner Presented at the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference
March 3, 2000 Introduction In the name of "economic development," Florida decision-makers continue land-use and transportation policies that increase urban sprawl and worsen our over-reliance on single-occupant vehicle transportation, to the neglect of other modes of transportation. This means more miles traveled in personal vehicles, more gasoline and oil purchased, more (and bigger) personal vehicles purchased, and more parking lots and lanes of pavement built. It means fewer transportation choices to walk, bicycle or ride public transit to work and other destinations. This lack of choice is a special burden for poor, elderly, disabled and other residents unable to drive. It also increases traffic congestion that means less efficient movement of tourists, freight, and business travelers.

Urban Sprawl Myths Urban sprawl is a contagious affliction that's spreading across America. The list of reasons that persuade small towns to trade real community planning for big box business is long and economically misguided. By Anna Burroughs Related: Urban Planning Urban Urban Myths Sprawl ... The Environmental Impact of Urban Sprawl Urban sprawl is creating an environmental crisis in our country. Problems such as loss of farmland, a decline in water quality, and the formation of the heat island effect can all be linked to urban sprawl. The Negative Effects of Urban Sprawl One of the biggest problems associated with urban sprawl is the effects it has on wildlife and nature itself. By Ash Related: Visual Effects Sprawl How Parking Lots Contribute to Urban Sprawl Parking lots push development farther and farther apart, increasing the need for roads, increasing the need for vehicles to get around, increasing the need for more parking. This is known as urban sprawl, and it's visible at a strip mall near you.

The Effect of Urban Sprawl on
Wildlife and Home Gardening Kay Hinkle
Adams County Master Gardener Anyone who lives in or near Adams County has witnessed first-hand a real building boom that is taking over farmland and open space. Did you know that the earth’s population increased at a more since 1950 than since the beginning of time? As this trend continues, it leads one to wonder how the many species of wild animals and birds native to Adams County will survive and where they will go when displaced by development. In November, you may have read my article on nesting birds and an effort by home gardeners to provide nesting sites for native birds. Today’s article focuses on managing effects of urban sprawl and native animals displaced by development. I hope you find it helpful in managing the changing environment and ultimately, wildlife habitat. Some scientists estimate that one third of the nation’s animal and plant species are at risk of extinction as a result of urban sprawl. A few examples are the Florida panther, black-tailed prairie dog and Pacific salmon. None of these animals are native to our area, making the threat of extinction to our native wildlife less concerning here at home. However, population growth has had an effect on the migration patterns of the black bear as evidenced by several recent stories of bear sightings in South Central Pennsylvania documented in area newspapers. Ultimately, bears that move from bird feeder to garbage can as primary food sources become a nuisance to homeowners. In rare cases the black bear may endanger residents, most often as a traffic hazard. We all benefit by keeping the black bear in remote areas of the state where foraging for bugs and berries as nature intended keeps them safe, healthy and out of trouble in the human domain.

Urban sprawl
From Free net encyclopedia
Urban sprawl is a term for the expansive, rapid, and sometimes reckless, growth of a greater metropolitan area , traditionally suburbs (or exurbs ) over a large area.
Contents
  • Characteristics edit
    Characteristics
Sprawl is characterized by several land use patterns which usually occur in unison: edit
    Single-use zoning
Commercial, residential , and industrial areas are separated from one another. Large tracts of land are devoted to the same type of development. Zoning areas are segregated from one another by roads , green space, or other barriers. As a result, the places where people live, work, shop, and recreate are necessarily far apart from one another. edit
    Low-density land use
Sprawl consumes much more land than traditional urban developments because new developments are of low density. Buildings usually have fewer stories and are spaced further apart separated by lawns landscaping roadways or parking lots . Lots of areas are larger and because more automobiles are used much more land is designated for parking. The impact of low density development in many communities is that developed or "urbanized" land is increasing at a faster rate than the population. In some places a population increase of one or two percent can produce an increase in developed land of as much as thirty percent. edit
    Car dependent communities
Areas of urban sprawl are also characterized as being extremely dependent on automobiles for

Please examine the above chart and references carefully. You are part of an endangered species known as THE HYDROCARBON PEOPLE, and the most industrialized nations have the farthest to fall in an imminent POPULAPSE. Only 2 percent of the US population lives on the farm, feeding the rest of our nation. Modern Agriculture, contrary to family style Amish Farming Practice or the Principles of the Minority Practice of Organic Farming, is the use of land as a massive corporate mechanism for converting petroleum into food. Oil drives the tractors, harvesters, 18 wheelers and the irrigation pumps sucking the irreplaceable pre-historic rainfall substance from the deep Ogalala Acquifer which underlies the midwest's "Breadbasket of the World". . Oil resources are finite and the rate at which cheap and easy oil could be discovered, worldwide, peaked back in the 1960's. The richly producing Alaska Pipeline peaked in 1988, and has been diminishing since. Yearly we are down to discovering only 7 billion barrels of new oil in the same time it is taking us to burn 23 billion barrels of that which has been previously discovered We will eat well as long as the oil lasts. A gallon of gasoline in an old John Deere farm tractor can do as much work as the118 field hands needed to pull weeds on their knees for a whole hour. One gallon = 118 man hours of human labor. Agri-Business is Oil-Business.
