The term “urban sprawl” may suggest that it applies only to big cities, but suburban and rural areas also confront development and land-management issues associated with urban growth. Examining housing growth is key to understanding and addressing sprawl. It is important to look at both permanent and seasonal housing, since in some Great Lakes counties up to 80 percent of the residences are vacation homes. Along with documenting patterns of growth, our unit looks at people’s perceptions of it, studying the perspectives of developers, planners, public officials, and permanent and seasonal residents.

A new study released today by the USDA Forest Service concludes that southern forests are sustainable, but cited urban sprawl as a potential future threat. The Southern Forest Resource Assessment report also highlights the important role that foresters can play in addressing sustainability and the long-term future of southern forests. "We believe this scientific report is an important contribution and confirms what we know about southern forests," says William H. Banzhaf, SAF’s executive vice-president. "We are pleased that the report confirms that the South’s forests are being sustainably managed. We especially endorse the report’s findings that forest management is vital for the region’s five million nonindustrial private forestland owners in their continuing efforts to keep their forestland healthy and productive." Compiled by more than 25 scientists from the Forest Service, Environmental Protection Agency, Tennessee Valley Authority, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and several universities, the report provides a comprehensive basis for informed public policy and decisionmaking.

In examples of this phenomenon, such as Los Angeles, California, the Washington DC metro area, and Atlanta, Georgia, new development is often low-density, where the metropolis grows outward instead of 'upward' as with higher densities. Environmentalists and an increasing number of urban planners disapprove of urban sprawl as a sustainable model of growth for several reasons. See also: Wikipedia Urban Sprawl

Editorial April 1999 by: Steven Hayward There is something amiss, and more than a little perverse, about the ruckus over urban sprawl that has the chattering classes in a full lather at the moment. Take Time magazine as an example. Three weeks ago Time decided to dramatize the issue of sprawl with a two-page photo spread of a new housing subdivision in Gwinnett County near Atlanta. This tableau would once have been regarded as a sign of pride and progress, of how the traditional American Dream of homeownership is being extended to ever more middle class people in our country. But Time ’s headline carried the opposite connotation: "Is there hope?" The controversy over urban sprawl continues to be discussed as an environmental issue, though the facts about the matter suggest that the environmental impacts of suburban development are comparatively minor. Less than 5 percent of the land area of the continental U.S. is developed, and the rate of development is less than .07% a year. Traffic congestion is less a function of low density development patterns than it is a function of affluence and lifestyle. But these are the kind of statistics that are almost irrelevant to the politics of the issue, because sprawl is a potent

Urban sprawl
Urban sprawl , also known as ... suburbs over rural land at the fringe of an urban area. Residents of sprawling neighborhoods tend to live in single-family homes and commute by automobile to work. Low population density is an indicator of sprawl. Urban planners emphasize the qualitative aspects of sprawl such as the lack of transportation options and pedestrian friendly neighborhoods. Conservationists tend to focus on the actual amount of land that has been urbanized by sprawl. The term urban sprawl generally has negative connotations due to the health and environmental issues that sprawl creates. Residents of sprawling neighborhoods tend to emit more pollution per person and suffer more traffic fatalities. Sprawl is controversial, with supporters claiming that consumers prefer lower density neighborhoods and that sprawl does not necessarily increase traffic. Sprawl is also linked with increased obesity since walking and bicycling are not viable commuting options. Sprawl negatively impacts land and water quantity and quality and may be linked to a decline in social capital Urban sprawl near Paris

autore non disponibile Data di pubblicazione: 03/11/2001 The Guardian It is said that the finest silk feels like nothing between the fingertips. Alessandro Baricco's international bestseller, Silk, was fine in every sense of the word: a beguiling 19th-century fable of a French silkworm trader and a Japanese concubine, whose wordless passion was so elliptically evoked that the novella barely seemed to exist. Now the Turin-based author follows it with a work cut from the coarsest, scratchiest tweed imaginable. Not only is City a much bulkier tome, it's a knotty ragbag of wanton circumlocution and narrative anarchy. It is like slipping out of a kimono and pulling on a hairshirt. Not that the experience is unduly penitential; it is just that tramping around Baricco's narrative can be tough going at times, and it does take a while to find your bearings. The author has stated that he wanted "to write a book that moved like someone who gets lost in the city... the stories are neighbourhoods, the characters are streets". What this means is that the place is packed with weird caricatures and unreliable narrators, none of whom are interested in giving intelligible directions. You might take this to signify that a city is a loose agglomeration of several different districts, whereas City is a loose agglomeration of several different books.
