Location: Vietnam is located in Southeast Asia, bordered by the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea to the east, China to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the Gulf of Thailand to the south. Size: Vietnam is long and thin, with an area of 330,363 square kilometers. Land Boundaries: Vietnam shares land boundaries with Cambodia (1,228 kilometers), China (1,281 kilometers), and Laos (2,130 kilometers). Disputed Territory: On December 30, 1999, China and Vietnam signed a treaty that settled disputes over the two nations’ common border. However, the Paracel and Spratly Islands in the South China Sea are still regarded as disputed territory. Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines, and Taiwan also claim sovereignty over the Spratly Islands, which are believed to be rich in oil and natural gas reserves. In May 2004, the government authorized 50 tourists and 40 officials to visit the Spratly Islands by boat. The other nations staking a claim to the islands protested what they interpreted as an assertion of sovereignty by Vietnam. In October 2004, Vietnam invited bids for oil exploration in the Spratlys, triggering a complaint from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In November 2004, China retaliated by moving an oil-drilling platform into position to explore for oil in the Paracels. Length of Coastline:

Covering and area of 329,600 square kilometres, Vietnam is some 7.5 % smaller than reunited Germany. But, like only a few other countries of similar size, it extends across two climatic zones - with a moderate climate in the North, comparable to that of Southern Europe, and a tropical climate in the South. Hanoi is, like Hongkong, located at a geographical latitude slightly to the South of Cairo or the Canary Islands, while Saigon is at a geographical latitude only slightly to the North of the Nigerian capital Lagos. Altogether the country stretches for more than 1,650 kilometres from North to South - which is roughly the distance from Hamburg to Athens. The coastline of Vietnam is about 3,000 kilometres long. To the West the country is bordered by Laos and Cambodia, to the North by China and to the East and South by the South China Sea. Geographically there are five different regions: 1. the northern mountain terrain with heights reaching above 3,000 metres; 2. the

Many visitors find more than enough to see and do in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other major cities; but despite the cities’ allure, it’s the country’s striking landscape that most impresses. Vietnam occupies a narrow strip of land that hugs the eastern borders of Cambodia and Laos, hemmed in by rugged mountains to the west and by the South China Sea to the east. To the north and south of its narrow waist, it dovetails out into the splendid deltas of the Red River and the Mekong, and it’s in these regions that you’ll encounter the paddy fields, dragonflies, buffaloes and conical-hatted farmers that constitute the classic image of Vietnam.
In stark contrast to the pancake-flat rice-land of the deltas, Ha Long Bay’s labyrinthine network of limestone outcrops loom dramatically out of the Gulf of Tonkin – a magical spectacle in the early morning mist. None of Vietnam’s mountains reach particularly impressive heights, so any trip to the remote upland regions of central and northern Vietnam is far likelier to focus upon the ethnic minorities who reside there. Elaborate tribal customs and communal longhouses await those visitors who venture into this world. Welcome greetings of ‘hello’ ring out from the many smiling Vietnamese faces anxious to interact with English speaking visitors.
