Âüåòíàìñêàÿ ýòíîëèíãâèñòè÷åñêàÿ îáùíîñòü îôîðìèëàñü îêîëî 200 äî í. ý. â íåçàâèñèìîì êîðîëåâñòâå Âüåòíàì, êîòîðàÿ ïîçæå áûëà àííåêñèðîâàíà (çàõâà÷åíà) Êèòàåì.  I âåêå í. ý. êîðîëåâñòâî Ôóíàí, íàõîäèâøååñÿ ïîä ñóùåñòâåííûì âëèÿíèåì Èíäèè, çàõâàòèëî çíà÷èòåëüíóþ ÷àñòü îáëàñòè äåëüòû Ìåêîíãà, íî â VI-ì ñòîëåòèè ýòî ãîñóäàðñòâî èñ÷åçëî.  939 ãîäó ñåâåð ñòðàíû íàêîíåö îñâîáîäèëñÿ îò êèòàéñêîãî ïðàâëåíèÿ. Âüåòíàì îòðàçèë òðè âòîðæåíèÿ ìîíãîëîâ â XIII-ì ñòîëåòèè , íî áûë ïîâòîðíî çàõâà÷åí Êèòàåì â 1407 ãîäó, ïîñëå ÷åãî íàöèîíàëüíîå ñîïðîòèâëåíèå îñâîáîäèëî ñòðàíó îò êèòàéñêîãî âëàäû÷åñòâà â 1428 ãîäó.  ýïîõó ïðàâëåíèÿ äèíàñòèè Ëå ãðàíèöû Âüåòíàìà ïîñòåïåííî áûëè ïðîäâèíóòû ê þãó.  1757 ãîäó ñòðàíà ðàçäåëèëàñü íà äâå ÷àñòè, è âîññîåäèíåíèÿ íå ïðîèçîøëî äî 1802 ãîäà, êîãäà ãåíåðàë Íãóåí Àíõ ñòàë èìïåðàòîðîì.
