The Official San Diego Chargers Forum Chargers Talk Off Topic > What do yall think about this "?" v.2 PDA View Full Version : What do yall think about this "?" v.2 Podium 05-30-2006, 07:49 PM There was another thread started on this, but people kept talking about Vick so I figured I'd start it here and see if we can stay on topic.
What do you guys think about the "?"
I'm quite fond of it actually and I think its an awesome change of pace when writing sentences, paragraphs, essays, and even speeches.
But what's the origin of the "?" Well here it is sports fans.
The symbol is generally thought to originate from the Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin) quaestio, meaning "question", which was abbreviated to Qo. The uppercase Q was written above the lowercase o, and this mark was transformed into the modern symbol. Another hypothesis about the origin of the question mark proposes that the mark originated in the 9th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9th_century), when it appeared as a point followed by the curvy bit written slanted (similar to the tilde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilde), although the tilde was tilted more upward to the right). The point has always indicated the end of a sentence. The curved line represented the intonation pattern of a spoken question, and may be associated with a kind of early musical notation, like neumes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neume).
What's interesting too is that it also has a role in computing:

Vietnamese Language
There have been many theories regarding the origin of the Vietnamese language. The most persuasive one argues that the Vietnamese language previously belonged to the Mon-Khmer group of the Southeast Asian linguistic system, it was later transformed into Viet-Muong language (or old Vietnamese language) and then separated to form the modern Vietnamese language. In the present-day Vietnamese language, many words have been proved to contain Mon-Khmer roots and to be phonetically and semantically relevant to the Muong language. Throughout a millennium of Chinese domination and under the Vietnamese feudal dynasties, the official language was the Han, but the Vietnamese always demonstrated its strength for self preservation and development. The Han language was pronounced in the Vietnamese way, called the Han-Viet way of pronunciation, and Vietnamized in various ways to create many commonly used Vietnamese words. The diverse development of the Vietnamese language brought about the birth of a system of writing scripts transcribing the Vietnamese language on the basis of the Han characters in the 13th century, called the Nom character.

HISTORY:
Like all languages, Vietnamese is a blend of several earlier languages. The basic vocabulary evolved from Mon-Khmer (ancient Cambodian). Chinese contributed much of the more advanced vocabulary (and the original writing system) and much of the grammar and pronunciation came from the ancient Tai people of South-western China (who were also the ancestors of today's Thai people). DIALECTS:
The two major Vietnamese dialects are those of the North and South. The differences between these are not as great as the Vietnamese would have you believe, although some regional dialects border onto incomprehensibility for other Vietnamese. There are minor pronunciation, tone and vocabulary differences between the Hanoi and Saigon dialects, but they are comparable to the differences between mid-western American English and British BBC English ALPHABET AND PRONUNCIATION:
Vietnamese has nine vowel sounds represented by twelve characters. The Roman alphabet doesn't have enough vowel characters for all of these, so they make up the difference by modifying some letters with diacritics. They use all of the Roman consonants except for F, J, W and Z. P is only used with H to make the /f/ sound, and at the end of words. Y is always a vowel, making the /I/ sound. They have only one modified consonant, , which produces a hard (/d/) sound
