Louis Pasteur suspected something smaller than bacteria caused rabies. For this small infectious substance he used Latin term for "poison." Russian biologist Dimitri Ivanowsky worked with tobacco mosaic virus . In 1892 he confirmed Pasteur's hypothesis of an infectious agent smaller than bacteria. The invention of the electron microscope in the twentieth century allowed visualization of these infectious agents that we know as viruses. A virus is a submicroscopic infectious particle composed of a protein coat and a nucleic acid core, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Viruses are similar in size to a large protein macromolecule, generally smaller than 200 nm in diameter. Viruses, like cells, carry genetic information encoded in their nucleic acid , and can undergo mutations and reproduce; however, they cannot carry out metabolism , and thus are not considered alive. Viruses are classified by the type of nucleic acid they contain, and the shape of their protein capsule. Examples of several viruses are shown in Figures 1-3. Figure 1. Structure of a variety of viruses.

By: Frederic Raynal Malicious cryptography, part one This two-part article series looks at how cryptography is a double-edged sword: it is used to make us safer, but it is also being used for malicious purposes within sophisticated viruses. Part one introduces the concepts behind cryptovirology and offers examples of malicious potential with the SuckIt rootkit and a possible SSH worm. It then introduces armored viruses that use shape shifting (polymorphism and metamorphism) to avoid detection. By: Frederic Raynal

    Introduction to RFID Technology
    RFID Threats
Unfortunately, businesses and governments are not the only ones interested in RFID. Civil liberties groups, hackers and criminals are also keenly interested in this new development, albeit for very different reasons. Civil liberties groups are concerned about RFID technology being used to invade people's privacy; RFID tags enable unethical individuals to snoop on people and surreptitiously collect data on them without their approval or even knowledge. For example, RFID-enabled public transit tickets could allow public transit managers to compile a dossier listing all of a person's travels in the past year information which may be of interest to the police, divorce lawyers, and others. However, privacy is not the focus of this website and will not be discussed further below. On the other hand, we are intensely concerned about privacy in an RFID-enabled world and have built an entire sister website about a device we have constructed, called the RFID Guardian, which could potentially help people protect their privacy from RFID snooping in the future. Those interested in RFID and privacy might want to check it out at
