What Are Vitamins and Minerals?
Vitamins and minerals make people's bodies work properly. Although you get vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat every day, some foods have more vitamins and minerals than others. Vitamins fall into two categories: fat soluble and water soluble. The fat-soluble water-soluble Whereas vitamins are organic substances (made by plants or animals), minerals are inorganic elements that come from the soil and water and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals. Your body needs larger amounts of some minerals, such as calcium, to grow and stay healthy. Other minerals like chromium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium, and zinc are called trace minerals because you only need very small amounts of them each day.
What Do Vitamins and Minerals Do?
Vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, support normal growth and development, and help cells and organs do their jobs. For example, you've probably heard that carrots are good for your eyes. It's true! Carrots are full of substances called carotenoids that your body converts into vitamin A, which helps prevent eye problems. Another vitamin, vitamin K, helps blood to clot (so cuts and scrapes stop bleeding quickly). You'll find vitamin K in green leafy vegetable, broccoli, soybeans, and oatmeal. And to have strong bones, you need to eat foods such as milk, yogurt, and green leafy vegetables, which are rich in the mineral calcium.

    THE RECOMMENDED daily allowance (RDA) of foods and supplements has traditionally been set by government health bodies in the USA, UK, and Europe. In the USA, RDA stands for "Recommended Daily Dietary Allowance, which is established for each vitamin and mineral by the Food and Nutritional Board of the National Academy of Sciences and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The US figures quoted here are from the FDA. In the UK the Department of Health gave the RDA for vitamins A, C, and D, three of the B vitamins, and three minerals in 1979. However, in 1993 the European Union - (EU) issued a directive on food labelling for its members, which included RDAs for twelve vitamins and six minerals. As a result, UK food labels are being revised to include the EU recommendations, although it may be some time before they appear.
    In addition, the government of the UK issued a report in 1991 suggesting new guidelines for daily requirements of vitamins and minerals, which would replace the RDAs. These are called, collectively, Dietary Reference Values (DRVs), and consist of these terms: Estimated Average Requirement (EAR), which should meet the requirements of half of the population.

    Vitamins are substances derived from plants and animals that are needed in small amounts in the body. These micronutrients are not a source of energy to the body but some are heavily involved in converting macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fats) into usable forms of energy. They are necessary for the normal growth, maintenance and repair of the body.
    Vitamins can also function as coenzymes in the body. That means they help enzymes do their job of promoting all of the body's biochemical reactions. Enzymes are so essential that out of the trillions of chemical activities occurring in your body, none would be possible without them. Enzymes are especially critical in nerve transmission, blood formation, muscle contraction, protein metabolism and energy production. In addition, vitamins are so necessary that every organ in the body won't be able to function without them.
    In general, the body can't make vitamins and so it is extremely important they are obtained from your diet or vitamin supplements. There are two exceptions however; vitamin D, which can be obtained through sunlight and niacin (B3), which can be made inefficiently from an amino acid (l-tryptophan).

It is important to check supplement labels to make sure that the supplement has less than the UL because the nutrients consumed from supplements add to the amounts eaten in food.
