    1984 and reality TV
Just read George Orwell's 1984 for the first time as research for a new book. There were some unsettling parallels with the novel and our present times. 1) The dictatorship in 1984 relied on a state of perpetual war to galvanise and motivate the population. Bush's declaration that the vague shadowy 'War on Terror' may last hundreds of years seems to prepare us for a state of continual (though sometimes non-existent) war. 2) The constant surveillance society of 1984 is coming to us. Since 911 more than a million cctv cameras have been placed in London alone. Our mobile phones, our credit card transactions, our internet access all give away our locations and activities. 3) The destruction of the English language in 1984 (called NewSpeak) can be seen in the falling standards of education. The dictatorship's reasoning was that if you limit the number and type of words available for thought, you can control the thoughts or at least limit the thoughts of the population, because they have no words to express unauthorised thoughts.

Maybe the Welsh also endeared themselves to the people of this tiny state when visiting for a football match in September last year. The 2-1 goal margin was a respectable loss for San Marino and the Welsh even threw in a streaker to give locals a taste of British culture. (BBC News UK)

Welsh culture: Encyclopedia - Annwn Annwn or Annwfn, ( "under-world" or "un-world", sometimes inaccurately written Annwyn, Annwyfn or Annwfyn) was the Otherworld, the land of souls that had departed this world in Welsh mythology. Ruled by Arawn, or much later by Gwynn ap Nudd, it was essentially a world of delights and eternal youth where disease is absent and food is ever-abundant. Annwn was said to lie so far to the west that not even Manawydan ap Llyr had found it, for you could only reach Annwn by dying yourself. It was also said, ...

Eisteddfod means something like 'a sitting', and is the annual competitive arts festival of Welsh language and culture - with prizes for poetry, prose, art, drama, dance, song, and many other aspects of artistic performance. It is all conducted in the medium of Welsh (though these days everyone who needs it has access to simultaneous translation!). Its roots go back over 800 years when Rhys ap Gruffydd, one of the Princes of Wales, began the tradition of awarding a chair to the best poet. However, the ceremonials and costumes you see here are romantic re-creations which nevertheless themselves first appeared in the 18th and 19th century. An insight - My Home in Wales
I have had loads of mails asking about where I live
I had already decided to write a blog on it, so here it is
The serious misschoos
As my friend mailed me about the photos in my profile, this is where the lakes are and we used to visit there a lot when we were children because it was within walking distance from the house.
The Museum of Welsh Life is situated approximately six miles from the centre of Cardiff.
The Museum of Welsh Life is a large site of more than one hundred acres. Buildings have been brought here from all over Wales and re-erected. They depict the way in which Welsh people lived over the last five hundred years.
St Fagans Castle itself is a C16th Manor House which was donated to us by the Earl of Plymouth which is now an attraction for sugar plum fairies to get married in.
Gardens around the castle are extremely well kept and presented and it is a real pleasure on a hot day to just walk around them. There are large ponds with fishes too (live ones, unlike the fishes on MD).
