friendly personalities and even temperaments, are extremely intelligent and easily trained. Both
Section A and Section B ponies are characterized by the following traits. A large bold eye, tiny
head, short back, strong quarters, high set on tail, fine hair, hocks that do not turn in, laid back
shoulder, straight foreleg and short cannon bone. The Section A Pony may not exceed 12.2hh.
**SECTION B
With all the physical and personality characteristics of the Section A, this section of the Welsh
Pony was originally added to meet the demand for a larger riding type pony. Section B ponies do not exceed 14.2hh but have no lower limit. They are well known for their elegant movement and athletic ability but still retain the substance and hardiness of their foundation, the Section A. The original home of the Welsh Mountain Pony was in the hills and valleys of Wales. He was there before the Romans. His lot was not an easy one...winters were severe and vegetation was sparse. Shelter, most often was an isolated valley or clump of bare trees. Yet the Welsh pony

The two most closely related languages are Cornish and Breton. Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Manx are also Celtic languages but are more distantly related. Our earliest evidence for the Celts comes from the Salzburg area of modern Austria at the beginning of the Iron Age. From there the influence of the Celts spread to include a large area which stretched from Britain, Ireland and Spain in the west to part of modern Turkey in the east. The Celtic influence can be seen in many present-day place-names, which have developed from earlier Celtic names. One of these is Lyon in France. The Romans called it Lugudunum, a name which they probably took over from the original Celtic inhabitants. The same name, with the elements reversed, is found in north Wales as Dinlleu.

There had been no England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales until fairly recent history and in the 6th century B.C. there were just two islands known as Ierne (Ireland) and Albion (England, Scotland and Wales). The total population at that time was somewhere between 4 and 5 million, concentrated mainly in the south-east of modern day England. This population was made up of tribes, each with its own king, king's followers, surfs and slaves, these tribes constantly squabbling amongst themselves over lands and "captives", especially women. They still managed however to trade with each other. About 325 B.C. a Greek geographer described the islands as Pretanic, a genuine Celtic word used to describe a form of speech, later to become Brittonic or the language of Britton (Britain). In Latin the islands became known as Brittania. The Celts of Ireland spoke Goidelic and of Wales it became Brythonic, from which modern Welsh is descended, including some Latin and the P-Celtic of French. The formation of modern Welsh was completed by about 700. The Romans invaded about 50B.C. and progressed until about 10 B.C. when they had some influence on "Wales" in the north and south but not in the middle hill country. The Romans power lasted until about 200A.D. before they withdrew from Wales and started slowly leaving these islands over a period of many years.

The section below is the start of a section about the land that I am very proud to call home, the City that I will never leave, and the area that I have spent the last 35 years living in. Some history of the land I live in. My parents came here to live in 1949 when I was just under a year old, and as they say the rest is history. But it is not is it? The real history of this incredible land began thousands of years ago. I am indebted to Britannia The way we talk is hugely different as well. I speak "Cardiffian" a flattened out version of the musical tongue of Wales. Even I will be the first to agree that it is not the most pleasant to listen to. However move just 20 miles away to the valleys, and there the people speak in the lilting musical way that the Welsh are renowned for. Then move over to the West, and the speech becomes much more of the Welsh tone. Up to North Wales, and people like me from the South, have a job understanding them. And that is in less than 200 miles! So why not have a look at the history of this lovely land from the Roman invaders to the modern Wales that I live in today. This is a fairly big section, but if you are interested in the history of this lovely small green land, then why not dip in and out of the 12 pages.

(rhan o ‘Etifeddiaeth’ gan Gerallt Lloyd Owen) Fel ein cefndryd yn y gwledydd Celtaidd, - Iwerddon, Yr Alban, Llydaw, Ynys Manaw a Chernyw, mae Cymru, a fu’n genedl ers dros 1500 mlynedd,yn fyw ac yn iach ac yn effro iawn heddiw. Mae hi’n wlad sy’n byrlymu o hanes,o draddodiadau a diwylliant; wedi ei bendithio droeon ag eneiniad Ysbryd Duw ac wedi’i breintio a thirwedd gogoneddus, yn cyferbynnu o’r mynyddoedd i’r dyffrynoedd, y cymoedd i’r mor. Mae sefydlu Cynulliad i Gymru ym 1999 yn gam nodedig ymlaen ar lwybr ein rhyddid,- ein gobeithion a’n dyheadau ynghyn ar doriad gwawr mileniwm newydd. Yr iaith Gymraeg yw un o’r ieithoedd hynaf a siaredir heddiw yn Ewrop, gyda chofnod o farddoniaeth cyn belled yn ol a’r 6ed ganrif. Llwyddodd y Gymraeg yn rhyfeddol, i raddau helaeth, i oroesi bygythiad ei chymydog daearyddol agosaf, yr iaith Saesneg, iaith mwyaf pwerus a dylanwadol y byd. Dros y 40 mlynedd diwethaf, gwelwyd statws newydd i’r Gymraeg, cynnydd yn ei phoblogrwydd ynghyd ag adfywiad syfrdanol yn ei defnydd mewn ardaloedd a gollodd yr iaith, megis y Gogledd-Ddwyrain a chymoedd y De. Bellach, rhyw 0.5 miliwn sy’n ei siarad allan o boblogaeth o 3 miliwn, gyda llawer rhagor yn fyd eang ac yn galonogol, mae cynnydd sylweddol yng nghanran y plant ysgol sy’n derbyn addysg trwy’r Gymraeg. Mae dosbarthiadau dysgu’r iaith i oedolion yn ddirifedi a chanolfannau a mentrau iaith yn y siroedd a’r broydd, felly, gyda dyfalbarhad, gallwn sicrhau fod gwytnwch ein pobl yn dwyn ffrwyth i’r dyfodol.

Up HISTORY OF THE HAMLET OF GELLIDEG A GUIDE TO MERTHYR TYDFIL AND THE TRAVELLER'S COMPANION F. J. Pedler At a time when awareness of local history and local history sources, become more popular and widely available, it is refreshing to re-examine a local classic. The History of the Hamlet of Gellideg deals with a very important area of the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil and overflows with local information and detail. The author, Fred Pedlar, was absorbed by local activities and kept meticulous lists of events. He uses his exhaustive files and knowledge to take us on a fascinating historical tour of his beloved hamlet. The style is very personal and surprisingly fresh and the content is outstanding. It puts meat on the bones of history. There have been many excellent books about the history of Merthyr Tydfil but if you read nothing else, read this! ISBN 1-899025-12-X T. E. Clarke

The Revolt of Owain Glyndwr. The Battle of Pilleth 22 June 1402 by Brian Palmer In 1401 Owain Glyndwr began a campaign for Welsh independence. He was crowned Prince of Wales at Carrog on the banks of the Dee and set up a parliament at Machynlleth. In 1402 Edmund Mortimer, Lord of Wigmore, who had been sent by Henry IV to put down the revolt, met the Welsh at Pilleth on Bryn Glas Hill. Owain's army totally destroyed the English forces and captured Mortimer, who threw in his lot with Owain, eventually marrying his daughter. The Welsh revolt continued for several years under Owain and although it was finally suppressed, Owain evaded capture, disappearing into the mists of history and welsh legend. http://www.geocities.com/snowtaire/welsh_history.htm

[Back]
Historians believe that the Welsh Terrier is one of the oldest pure bred terriers, evidence indicates that he has changed very little from the all round working terrier developed several hundreds of years ago in the high mountains and hidden valleys of Wales. Late in the nineteenth century when improved methods of transportation opened that part of Britain to travelers, hunters and fanciers from all over the world who recognized and admired its possibilities. Some confusion resulted when the English Kennel Club admitted the breed for registration on a joint basis with the Old English Wire Haired Black and Tan Terrier, now thought to be a hodge podge of the breeds, which resembled the Welsh terrier. In any event, the Black and Tan no longer exists while the Welshman remains a testimonial to the sound requirements set up by his breeders.
The function of the Welsh, common to all terriers is that of an “earth stopper”, or dog that will go to ground or into caves after game. Terriers were used with packs of hounds which drove the quarry to a spot where the terrier could corner and seize it, or force it again into the open for the chase. Because they usually became involved in physical combat with such deadly animals as otter and badger, terriers were bred for courage far greater than was needed in hounds or pursuit dogs. In the Welsh, strength combined with small size was desired and developed. A surpassingly good ability to scent game was also an important part of the Welsh character which increased its value as a working terrier.
