The BBC's Welsh Language Scheme
The BBC is committed to communicating bilingually with the public in Wales. This publication of a Welsh Language Scheme incorporates many of the current working practices of the BBC and formalises language policies, as required by the Welsh Language Board. This document is a revision of the BBC Welsh Language Scheme originally published in 1998. The BBC recognises the principle of equality between English and Welsh. Regard for both languages has been integral to the administration of the BBC in Wales for many years. Within Wales, the BBC Cymru Wales Board of Management is responsible for administering the scheme. On a wider corporate basis, the BBC's General Counsel is responsible for the scheme. A report on the operation of the scheme is included each year in the BBC Cymru Wales Annual Review. To open a PDF file you need Adobe Reader software, which you can download free from the

There are also speakers of Welsh throughout the world, most notably in the rest of Great Britain , the United States Canada and Australia Due to the increasing use of the English language the numbers of Welsh speakers had been declining for decades. However, following a number of measures, including the introduction of the Welsh Language Act 1993, Welsh has enjoyed a strong revival in recent years and has an equal status with English in the public sector in Wales. It is the most spoken Celtic language. See Welsh English for the English language as spoken in Wales.

The Welsh Language Act and BIG’s Welsh Language Scheme. The Welsh Language Act was published in 1993. It established the principle that in the conduct of public business and administration of justice in Wales the English and Welsh languages should be treated on a basis of equality. The act also made provisions for the preparation and approval of Welsh Language Schemes. The Welsh Language Board was established under the Act in 1993 to facilitate the process of preparing Welsh Language Schemes. In accordance with the Welsh Language Act 1993, the Fund has developed a Welsh Language Scheme which sets out how it will treat the Welsh and English languages on an equal basis, in the conduct of it’s public business in Wales. It is a matter of equality of opportunity to enable people to engage with the Fund through their preferred language. The measures set out in the scheme relate to all aspects of the Fund’s work in Wales including communications, policy, operations, human resources, procurement and evaluation. The Fund also expects applicants providing services in Wales to demonstrate how they will reflect the linguistic nature of the communities in which they work.  The Fund will meet with the Welsh Language Board regularly during the year to report on the progress of the scheme.

    The Welsh Language
The Welsh Language, or Cymraeg, a form of Brythonic Celtic, is spoken widely in Snowdonia. Around 20% (around 600,000) of the Welsh population now speak the language. Welsh can be traced back in written form to the sixth century and was a thriving language until the coming of the Normans into England in 1066. In contrast to English, Welsh has evolved little and early Welsh would still be understood by a modern Welsh speaker, in contrast to the modern English man would fail to understand an Anglo-Saxon script. After the conquest of Wales by Edward I in 1284 all official business was carried out in French. In 1588, William Morgan first translated the bible into Welsh, which ensured the survival of the language.
    The National Eisteddfod of Wales

The first recorded Eisteddfod was held in 1176. The popularity of the festival suffered a decline in the eighteenth century but underwnt a revival in the the early years of the nineteenth. An Eisteddfod has been held annually since 1880, with the exception of the war years 1914 and 1940.

Welsh Language School Children Swap Places with their teachers
More than 30 school children swapped places with their teachers on the 25th January to bring family members into the 21st Century with an internet lesson. Pupils at Ysgol Bro Sannan, Aberbargoed, showed parents and grandparents how to navigate around sites of interest, search for information and send an email as part of a BT sponsored programme called Internet Rangers. The event, which was attended by Wayne David, MP for Caerphilly, proved that you are never too old to learn a new skill and never too young to teach one.
    Employability skills
Ann Beynon, BT Director Wales and Chair of Business in the Community Wales added: "It's wonderful to see the generations united through technology, it's a real confidence boost for young people as they assume the role of teacher and mentor, and to the older generation the internet can open up a whole new world where hobbies and interests can be explored. They can keep in touch with friends and family and, of course, prove that it's never too late to learn a new skill." Participating pupils will also receive information on internet safety, a certificate and the opportunity to win an iPod Nano, provided by BT.
