An example is the Welsh word gwneud, in English it means "do". Sometimes the word changes from gwneud to wneud. These sound (in speech) or letter (in writing) changes also occur within and at the end of words although the simplified classification found in ordinary books does not mention this.

Welsh Language The first written record of note was De Excidio Britanniae written in Latin by the monk Gilas in A.D. 547. Several texts were produced around the 7th century using an eccentric form of latin mixed with Brythonic, Hebrew and Greek called Hisperic.
It was at this time that the Welsh language started to emerge from the Brythonic, although it was not until the 9th century that it came to be written down.
By the end of the 8th century, Welsh ousted Latin as the language of the aristocracy.
The Industrial Revolution in the 1730s brought an influx of English-speakers into the country and led to a decline in Welsh.
Today only 20% of the population, mostly in the northwest and west, speak Welsh but many are determined to rejuvenate the language. A Welsh Language Board was set up in 1988 and Welsh S4C (Channel 4 Wales) televises daily Welsh programs.

This 'Welcome to Cardiff ' banner greeted visitors to the Welsh capital in 2006. The Welsh language is a Celtic language spoken mainly in Wales and one corner of Patagonia in Argentina . Like English , its roots can be traced to the Proto-Indo-European tongue once spoken across Europe and central Asia . Its closest relative is Breton , spoken in France , and it is also in the same language family as Irish and Scottish Gaelic Today, about 20% of Welsh people identify themselves as Welsh speakers, and the popularity of the language is on the rise - a far cry from the nineteenth century , when children were often punished for speaking the language at school. Most speakers are found in North Wales , where the dialects are distinctly different from those spoken in South Wales . Though almost every speaker of Welsh is also bilingual with English, many older speakers in particular are more comfortable in Welsh. Their right to use the language is guaranteed by law, with all public bodies required to display bilingual signs and provide services in both languages. Private companies and organisations, however, are simply encouraged to provide Welsh language provision.

The number of Welsh speakers throughout the rest of Britain is uncertain, but numbers are higher in the main cities and there are speakers along England's border with Wales. In , the Welsh-language TV channel published the results of a survey into the numbers of people speaking/understanding Welsh, and this estimated that there were some 133,000 Welsh-speakers living in England , about 50,000 of them in the Greater London More Welsh Speakers than Previously Believed Even among the Welsh-speakers, few residents of Wales are monolingual in Welsh. The Welsh Language
How many people can speak Welsh? According to the 1991 census, more than 508,000 people over 3 years old in Wales can speak Welsh, which is 19% of the population. The number of young people who are able to speak Welsh has increased significantly since 1981: Age And more recent research suggests that the levels have increased again, and that as many as one in every three children between 3 and 15 years old can speak Welsh. Why has this happened? This increase is mainly due to the decision of many parents to choose Welsh-medium education for their children, because they want their children to be able to speak and use Welsh in every aspect of their lives. Do more people support the language now? The attitude of people, including those who don’t speak Welsh, towards the language has changed. Independent opinion surveys in Wales, for example one by NOP in 1995, have shown that as many as 88% of those questioned believe that the Welsh language is something to be proud of, and that Welsh and English should be treated equally in Wales. What does the law say?

The census gives a figure of 20.5% of the population of Wales as Welsh speakers (up from 18.5% in ), out of a population of about 3 million, however it appears that about a third of the population of Wales has immigrated within the last 30 years. Even among the Welsh-speakers, few, if any, residents of Wales are monolingual in Welsh. Although Welsh is a minority language, and thus threatened by the dominance of English , support for the language grew during the second half of the twentieth century , along with the rise of nationalist political organisations such as the political party Plaid Cymru and Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg (the Welsh Language Society).
