    Wombats
    September 2002
    What do wombats look like?
Wombats are stout, sturdy marsupials. They grow to about 1.3 metres in length, and can weigh up to 36 kg. They have a large, blunt head with small eyes and ears, and a short, muscular neck. Their sharp claws and stubby, powerful legs make them great diggers. Wombats have been known to live for up to 27 years in captivity. Two of the three species of wombat occur in NSW:
    • The common wombat , most widespread of the two, has a large, naked snout covered in grainy skin. The much rarer southern hairy-nosed wombat has larger ears than the common wombat, and its snout is coated with fine hairs.

The northern hairy-nosed wombat is presumed extinct in NSW.
    Where do they live?

Wombats are without a doubt (in my extremely biased opinion) the most lovable of Australia's many marsupials. They are large enough to substitute for your average family dog and are just as playful - at least while they're young. It must be said however that Wombats don't automatically do well in captivity and only a handful would make a suitable pet. Please don't write to me asking where you can buy one! You can't. I don't reply to such emails. In particular anyone outside Australia should realize that there is a good chance that any Australian fauna that you might come upon has been smuggled out of this country. A high proportion of smuggled fauna dies in transit. Don't buy Australian fauna unless you are certain it has been obtained legally. Otherwise you are just helping the murderers. Wonderful Wombats There are three species of Wombats. The most numerous and widespread is the Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus ). The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latrifrons) is an arid climate animal and only lives in a few areas of southern South Australia and Western Australia. Its range was much wider before European settlement. It is well adapted to it's harsh environment where it must survive without water in high temperatures. The available food tends to be fibrous and low in water and protein. It lives in extensive warrens where the atmosphere is cool and humid during

Being rather timid and primarily nocturnal, they're difficult to observe in their natural habitat and haven't been well studied. They weren't even noticed by European settlers for ten years. Information is somewhat scarce, and what there is, is often contradictory. Facts were gathered from a number of sources, so differing viewpoints are included where appropriate. Pictures with words describing what the wombats are doing.
http://www.abc.net.au/schoolstv/animals/WOMBATS.htm
Wombats They are mammals A female wombat's pouch opens backwards so that when mum is digging she doesn't cover her baby with sand. Because wombat babies live in their mother's pouch drinking her milk, wombats are marsupials Baby wombats stay with their mum for about two years. They then have to look after themselves. Wombats have thick soft fur. Their strong legs and claws are good for digging burrows to live in. They are very shy. They are nocturnal animals. Most of the day they sleep in a burrow. In the evening or at night they go looking for food. They are herbivores To keep themselves clean they have a dust bath. They lie on their side and scoop sand over themselves. They can swim. Their teeth grow continuously, so if they break a tooth it just re-grows. Wombat droppings are called scats. Each wombat's scats have a different smell. They leave them outside their burrows. Scats help a wombat find its own burrow when it returns after a busy night looking for food.

Welcome to the
World Wide Wombat Web!
Wombats are cute furry creatures from Australia. There are not nearly enough web pages about them, and this page seeks to help fill this obvious shortfall. Wombats belong to the marsupial order of species from Australia. The other marsupials include the koala, kangaroo, wallaby, bandicoot, bilby, nabarlek, quokka, quoll, tasmanian devil, tasmanian tiger and ringtail possum. There is also one species of marsupial found in North America, the Opossum. For information about the the three species of the wombat family and details of their lifestyle and life cycle, see the alt.animals.wombat Frequently Asked Questions list. The northern hairy-nosed wombat is a severely endangered species and the other types are at risk too. Wombats are really much nicer creatures than koalas (too irritable when not drugged up on eucalyptus) and kangaroos (too stupid, and too tiring to watch). Why isn't anyone doing more to save the wombat?

About Common Wombats
Common Name Common Wombat
Scientific Name Vombatus ursinus
The first European encounter with wombats in 1797 turned out to be unfortunate for the humans and much worse for the wombats. Shipwrecked on Preservation Island near Tasmania after the sinking of the Sydney Cove, sailors dined on the tough, sinuous meat of the wombat, a creature they likened to a badger or a bear. We now know that wombats are one of the largest burrowing animals in the world, weighing up to 40 kilograms. Generations of these marsupials build and add to complex burrow systems that can be up to 30 metres (100 feet) long with several entrances. These humid burrows are where wombats take refuge during the heat of the day, allowing them to conserve water and energy. In fact, a wombat's metabolic rate at rest is 30% slower than most marsupials. Having rootless teeth that grow continuously throughout life, their diet of sandy, native grasses, help to grind down their teeth. Mating occurs inside the burrow and must be performed while lying on their side. One baby is born and develops in a backward opening pouch, just like a koala.

A complicated dance, a bite on the rump and ferocious backward kicks are all part of the wombat's lovemaking repertoire, a new study has revealed. Until recently, there were no recorded observations of mating between wombats. But the director of Nocturnal Wildlife Research Ltd, biologist Clive Marks, found wombats were more likely than the average Aussie male to emulate moves from the Kama Sutra Mr Marks, whose findings are to be published this week in Nature Australia magazine, says the first successful captive breeding of wombats was recorded in Hannover, Germany, in 1982. "With absolute precision, details of the wombat's sex life were recorded and, surprisingly, it seemed anything but modest," he says. "It appeared to be a physically demanding process, complete with chasing, biting, grunting and loads of heavy breathing."
