Wombat Gallery This wombat was very young when rescued. The mother was hit and killed by a car. Babies such as this one have a good survival rate if rescued early enough. This one will be kept for almost two years before being ready for release. At this age, they need feeding with milk formula - specially made for marsupials. They require as much care at this age as a young baby human.
This Wombat enjoyed all the pleasures of home - for a while. Before they can be released, contact with their carers becomes less frequent, and they are often paired with other animals and 'taught' how to forage for their own food. After release, we try to monitor their progress whenever possible.
This young Wombat was taken to a local bush area for a 'photo-shoot' arranged for the benefit of two Nature Journalists (whose credits include photo essays for National Geographic).

The common wombat is the largest burrowing herbivorous mammal. Indeed, it is such an accomplished burrower that early settlers called it a 'badger', a term that is still heard today. However, the closest relative of the wombat is, in fact, the koala. With its short tail and legs, characteristic waddle and 'cuddly' appearance the wombat is one of the most endearing of Australia's native animals.
Distribution
There are three subspecies of common wombat Vombatus ursinus hirsutus which is found on the mainland, Vombatus ursinus tasmaniensis which is found in Tasmania and Vombatus ursinus ursinus which was once found throughout the Bass Strait islands but is now restricted to Flinders Island.
The common wombat was once found throughout south eastern Australia but now, partly as a result of European settlement, is restricted further to the south. It occupies Tasmania, eastern New South Wales and eastern Victoria with scattered populations in south eastern South Australia and south western Victoria. There are two other species of wombat, both found on mainland Australia - the southern hairy-nosed wombat and the threatened northern hairy-nosed wombat.
Wombats can be seen in a number of our national parks, including Narawntapu (formerly Asbestos Range) and Cradle Mountain National Park. More information about these national parks can be found on the Parks and Wildlife web site at

Common Wombat Profile
Wombats use their claws to dig burrows in open grasslands and eucalyptus forests. They live in these burrows, which can become extensive tunnel-and-chamber complexes. Common wombats are solitary and inhabit their own burrows, while other species may be more social and live together in larger burrow groups called colonies.
Wombats are nocturnal and emerge to feed at night on grasses, roots, and bark. They have rodentlike incisors that never stop growing and are gnawed down on some of their tougher vegetarian fare.
The field and pasture damage caused by wombat burrowing can be a destructive nuisance to ranchers and farmers. Wombats have been hunted for this behavior, as well as for their fur and simply for sport. Some species (the northern hairy-nosed wombats) are now critically endangered, while others (the common or coarse-haired wombat) are still hunted as vermin. Space for all wombats is at a premium as farm and ranch lands increasingly replace natural space.
