Many people ask about book recommendations. There are many great books out there and I am starting to list my favorites in my bookstore section. I have the pleasure of writing the ‘Novice Nibblings’ column for Carving Magazine.I started this website to help me get information to other carvers. Over time the site has grown to include some of my other pursuits. Besides carving my family and I like to raise some of our own food and have acquired laying hens, bees, and assorted fruits and vegetables. This new site focuses on carving and these other activities. You’ll notice a row of tabs across the top of the page. These can take you directly to the section you are interested in. On the right you’ll also notice a search box. You can search directly for any specific content on the site as well. On the right are some other links you can use to reach specific topics. Feel free to click around.I appreciate your interest in what I write about and for taking the time to drop by. I hope you enjoy!

Sculpture I was born, raised, and still live in the small and historic seacoast town of York, Maine and I have been a professional woodworker for more than 25 years. This web site is really a portfolio containing pictures and descriptions of some of the many interesting woodworking projects that have been hand made in my one-man shop. On the following pages you will find hand woodcarving that includes carved acanthus leaf mantle brackets, prototypes, hand carved business and residential signs, large turned and carved wooden capitals made as patterns for the cast stone industry and some intricate woodturning projects to include a type of bagpipe. Also featured is the restoration of a circa 1900 carved wooden Indian and a page dedicated to an exhibit in the National Archives entitled "Tokens and Treasures: Gifts to twelve Presidents." One of my carvings was featured in this yearlong display. Architectural Woodcarving LLC

taught. We have been carving and painting for 40 years. Our first carvings were wildlife scenes carved on gun stocks. I have also carved realistic animals and western figures. I have made hunting knives and did a lot of scrimshaw. We have exhibited at gun and knife shows and woodcarving shows, and have won many ribbons and awards
We live in the beautiful Ozark hills, in Southwest Missouri. This is where Barb was born and raised, in fact we only live 12 miles from the little cabin where she was born. I was born in Atchison, Kansas, and grew up in Northeast Kansas, until I joined the Navy, after graduating from high school at Lawrence. I served on a mine sweeper stationed at Long Beach, California.
After returning to civilian life I developed an interest in woodworking, then woodcarving. Now we make our living doing woodcarving, and teaching carving seminars around the United States. We have enjoyed our visit with you, and hope to meet you down the road sometime at a woodcarving show or seminar.

Examples of ancient Maori wood sculpture are rare but a number survive, due, in part, to the practice of hiding valuable carvings by immersing them in swamps during times of unrest. The waterlogged environment subsequently preserved the wood. Much of early Maori woodcarving shows stylistic affinities with works from eastern Polynesia, where the ancestors of the Maori almost certainly originated. As the generations passed, a distinctively Maori carving style gradually began to emerge, developing into what is recognized as the classic Maori style sometime around 1500. Unlike its more sparely ornamented predecessors, classic Maori woodcarving is characterized by boldly rendered three-dimensional forms whose surfaces are engraved with intricate designs. According to one Maori oral tradition, the art of woodcarving was brought to their ancestors by the cultural hero Ruatepupuke. In the story, Ruatepupuke's son Manuruhi offended Tangaroa, the god of the sea. As punishment, Tangaroa abducted Manuruhi, transforming him into a woodcarving to adorn the gable of his house beneath the sea. Ruatepupuke descended into the sea in search of his son, where he overheard the carved ancestor posts of Tangaroa's house talking to each other. The posts told him where to find Manuruhi. Angered by the mistreatment of his son, Ruatepupuke set fire to Tangaroa's house. He then returned to the human world, bringing Manuruhi and several carved posts with him, and introduced the art of woodcarving to humanity. The reference to talking carvings in the story evokes the aesthetic standards Maori carvers aspire to in creating their work. A masterful carving is said to "speak" to the viewer, while a lesser example remains silent.

How to Begin Woodcarving With a Utility Knife
Woodcarving is a time tested hobby that is both relaxing and fun. However, starting out can be intimidating. If you want to give the hobby a try without buying a lot of expensive tools, here's how to get started on a simple carving using just a utility knife and a few other things that cost very little.
edit Steps
  • Simple Flower Pattern Choose your pattern. The first part of any woodcarving project is deciding what to carve. There are many places you can find good pattern books, such as hobby shops and the internet, or you can draw your own. Choose your wood. There are a lot of different types of wood providing a wide variety of color and grain textures. Some basic woods can be found at your local hardware store, while more exotic woods can be found at hobby shops, specialty wood stores and on the internet. Some woods are better suited for some projects than others. For your first carving, it is best to use a soft wood like pine, bass or soft maple (available at most hardware stores). If you can easily mark the wood with your fingernail, it is probably soft. Trace the pattern onto wood Trace your pattern.

Last week I took my aunt and uncle to Sanyi. One of the places we visited was the wood carving museum there. I was afraid it might be some hokey local musuem, but it turned out to be an extremely pleasant experience, several floors of beautiful objects of many different styles. This museum is just one of the many interesting local museums (here's a page on the earthquake museum in Wufeng ) that populate Taiwan. If you haven't been there on a trip to Sanyi, don't miss it.
