Youth Advocacy
The Youth Advocacy Unit employs attorneys in the St. Louis and Kansas City areas to ensure effective representation of juveniles. Attorneys in the unit also litigate certification proceedings and jury trials in the adult court system, if the child is certified to stand trial as an adult. The Youth Advocacy Unit was created in 1997 in response to a new trend in juvenile legislation putting more emphasis on punishment than on rehabilitation. To more effectively implement the United States Supreme Court ruling that juveniles are entitled to all constitutional protections, the Missouri State Public Defender System created a Youth Advocacy Unit. The unit employs a mix of new and experienced attorneys as well as interns. In addition to the training available to all attorneys in the Trial Division, attorneys in the Youth Advocacy Units also participate in a variety of national training opportunities that specifically address the special issues involved in juvenile defense. The unit also employs investigators to examine the circumstances surrounding the criminal charge. Staff disposition specialists conduct social investigations and locate available resources to help the client with treatment needs. They have masters degrees in social work and counseling and act as experts for court, testifying about treatment needs and alternatives on behalf of our clients.

What children living in violent homes need: Role models - Children growing up in violent homes are not taught to use violence to solve problems. A role-model can teach the child how to non-violently and effectively resolve problems. They can also teach the child how to make better choices in their life. Family Support - Close family members such as brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc., can be available for the child living in a violent home to talk to. They can help the child receive the help that he/she needs in order to stay safe. Community Support - Programs throughout the community can teach the child living in a violent home the skills they need to be non-violent and helps to build their self-esteem. Individual Therapy This type of therapy can help the child to build self-esteem, teach the child how to trust again and how to express his/her emotions in a healthy way. Group Therapy and Self-Help Groups This type of therapy enables the child to talk with others who are experiencing the same situations that they are.

Youth Advocacy
Syracuse Youth Services works with court-involved youth who would otherwise remain in detention or face placement in a juvenile or adult correctional facility. Referrals can be made at any stage in the juvenile/criminal justice process: bail, plea, sentence and disposition. CCA provides court advocacy for youth including development of client-specific, alternative-to-detention plans and intensive supervision. A client-specific plan is based on a review of the case and investigation including interviews with the youth, family members and others. If the youth is eligible, the plan will advocate for an alternative to detention based on the specific circumstance of the case. In addition, the plan will include recommendations on case management, supervision of school attendance, curfews, home visits, enrollment in CCA youth services and referrals to community-based services as needed. If the Court agrees to the plan, then the young person is accepted by CCA and given a case manager. Monthly reports are made to the Court, the County Attorney and/or Probation. CCA's Youth Services demonstrate that intensive support and care for young people can effectively reduce the use of detention and custodial placement without sacrificing public safety.

The City was able to double the number of summer jobs available to teens this year. Please click on the following link to read the full NH Register article
Youth Rally Raises Awareness
Last February, 30 Youth @ Work participants from James Hillhouse, Hill Regional Career and Wilbur Cross High Schools traveled to the State Capitol for "Making Our Voices Heard," a youth rally to support legislation for a $100 Million Dollar "Youth Employment Trust Fund." Joining hundreds of youth from across the state, youth met with state legislators and testified in committee hearings about the impact this funding would have on their futures. The State funded $4 million for youth job opportunities in 2006, of which South Central CT received $900,000. Youth@Work volunteers will be back in Hartford, working for 2007 funding. To find out more about how you can get involved and petition state legislators to vote for youth employment bills, please click on this link

Law data bases Computers using either CD-ROMs or the internet can access a large amount of legal materials, including Acts of parliaments and law reports. An advantage in using a computer to access legal material is that it is more likely to be up-to-date and makes searching for information on related topics easier. The Internet- Primary Legal Sites A computer capable of connection to the internet can provide access to large amounts of ‘public domain’ legal material. Public domain material is available to all. The amount of information and sites is ever increasing. A selection of legal sites on the internet which contain Australian legal information and which are particularly useful because of their links to other sites include: AUSTLII ( www.austlii.edu.au ). This is the ideal starting point for Australian legal research. It provides access to cases and legislation. It also provides access to journals and an index of Australian materials; The Australian government Home Page ( www.fed.gov.au
