(November 2007) Youth mentoring is the process of matching mentors with young people who need or want a caring, responsible adult in their lives. Adult mentors are usually unrelated to the child or teen and work as volunteers through a community-, school-, or church-based social service program. Although informal mentoring relationships exist, formal, high-quality mentoring matches made through local or state mentoring organizations are often the most effective. A more formal definition of youth mentoring is provided by the Web site InfEd “The classic definition of mentoring is of an older experienced guide who is acceptable to the young person and who can help ease the transition to adulthood by a mix of support and challenge. In this sense it is a developmental relationship in which the young person is inducted into the world of adulthood.” Hamilton, 1991; Freedman, 1995) During the last 20 years, a greater awareness of the power of mentoring has emerged nationwide—the need for formal organizations to work to match more young people with mentors in an effort to provide support and structure for children at risk.

Bauer Students Gratified by Youth Mentoring, Volunteerism
Running the store. Kids learn entrepreneurial skills from management junior Danny Klam.
Programs designed to reach out to and nurture the next generation of business leaders are flourishing this summer through various programs of the C.T. Bauer College of Business. Klam, who came to UH with experience working as a sales manager for Houston-area Toyota dealerships, says he got a charge out of seeing the unbridled enthusiasm the children had for their entrepreneurial roles. Frank Kelley, assistant dean of Undergraduate Business College programs at Bauer, will go to the Academy to train students who will then work at the virtual University of Houston on the day of the event. Several academic advisors will team up with students as they experience a condensed lifespan (ages 19 to 26) in a single eight-hour day.

One of the principal objectives of the Fellowship Open is to encourage youngsters to aspire to their dreams and particularly consider careers in business. The Fellowship Open makes a real outreach effort through a series of mentoring programs. The entire Fellowship Open events revolve around young people. A separate program is held for young people with business and civic leaders the day of the golf event which is designed to give young people a sense of inspiration and hope as to what they can achieve. Last year's event was an absolute thrill for the youngsters and they had a chance to meet and discuss their careers with business and civic leaders in the community.
Each of the youngsters associated with the event is given a business periodical from a major Wisconsin company to study and learn more about it along with an annual subscription to Black Enterprise magazine. One of the youngsters is selected to attend the national Black Enterprise Entrepreneurial Conference and then asked to share that experience with other youngsters. This is designed for the youngsters to realize that there are successful entrepreneurs and business people that can serve as role models. This year's student was Andrew Ellis who in fact addressed the luncheon event last year.
Finally, a group of minority professionals who are involved in major companies in Milwaukee holds a business seminar for youngsters in the fall in an effort to let kids know more about the opportunities in business, the challenges and that it can be achieved. The exposure to both business leaders and young professionals provides a unique experience

Youth Mentoring
Serenity Care for Seniors Inc. is expanding its Intergenerational Mentoring Initiative which recognizes the valuable contribution seniors make to our community. In Ontario we have developed a collaboration with a registered not-for-profit s ocial services agency where seniors have a unique opportunity to participate in youth initiatives, where they share their life experiences as 'volunteer mentors.' It is important to us that we can provide an array of experiences for seniors that help them to share their life experiences with others in the community. Having worked in the social services sector for many many years we have the experience in helping seniors, who are interested in this volunteer mentoring experience, participate in mentoring relationships with youth. It is important to us that we endeavour to create community-based opportunities across Ontario (and Canada), where young people and seniors can work together on initiatives where there is a shared interest. These mentoring relationships can have a profound and positive affect on the young person, the senior, and the community.
