Plains Zebra
Name: Zebra Scientific name: Equus burchelli Range: Eastern, Southwestern, and Southern Africa Habitat: open grassy plains, some in mountains Status: some extinct species Diet in the wild: grazing animals, grass Diet in the zoo: Location in the zoo:  African Hoof Stock Exhibit Physical description: Height 4-5ft. Zebras can weigh up to 300kg and become up to 2.40 meters long. Each Zebra has its own stripe pattern. Zebras are black with white stripes.  General information Zebras like to live in long lasting family herds and a stallion controls each family. The stallion defends the herd against potential rivals and predators such as hyenas. A zebra can become up to 20 years old or in a zoo up to 28 years old. Special anatomical, physiological or behavioral adaptations Each zebra has its own stripe pattern. The zebras recognize each other by their stripe pattern and by their smell. Some species have narrow close set stripes, while others have broader stripes. Zebras like to help groom each other. There are three living species of zebras: Grevy's zebra, Cape Mountain zebra, and the Plains Zebra, which has several subspecies, including the now extinct Quagga.   Zebra Trivia Here is a really neat fact! Did you know that the phylogeny of equids is the most heavily documented fossil record of evolutionary development for any animal group?

They can run up to 40 mph (65 kph) in short bursts in order to escape from predators (like lions and hyenas). The zebra's life span is about 28 years. Zebras are closely related to horses and donkeys Families and Herds : Zebras are very social animals and live in large, stable family groups which are led by females. Stallions (males) watch the rear of the group in order to help protect them from predators. Families will sometimes merge to form large herds.

Photo © Andre Maritz / Shutterstock. Zebras, with their familiar horse-like physique and their distinct black and white striping pattern, are among the most recognizable of all mammals. We learn at an early age to distinguish zebras from other animals (when learning the alphabet, youngsters are often shown a picture of a zebra and are taught 'Z is for Zebra'). But our knowledge of zebras usually ends with that early introduction. So in this article, I'd like to explore ten things we should all know about zebras, ten things other than the fact that they have stripes and a respectable command of the letter Z.

    Can zebras be domesticated?
    No, zebras cannot be domesticated.
They are unpredictable and are known to attack people. To be domesticated, animals must meet certain criteria. For example, they must have a good disposition and should not panic under pressure. Zebras' unpredictable nature and tendency to attack preclude them from being good candidates for domestication. For more information about the criteria for domestication see : The Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Animal Attraction Fact Sheet: Why were so few animals domesticable While attempts at domestication have failed, some individuals have had success training and even hybridizing zebras! Common zebra hybrids: Zorse (horse + zebra) and Zonkey (donkey + zebra). Zebra hybridization has actually been in existence at least a century. One of the pioneers in the field was J.C. Ewart, author of The Penycuik Experiments in 1899.

Fact: Black stripes on white or white stripes on black? Some zebras are born with unfully formed stripes that seem to indicate a black background, pigment, or skin color with white stripes. But, how can zebra stripes be useful for camouflage? Since a lion, one of the zebra's main predators, is color blind, the pattern of the zebra's stripes is more crucial than color for the zebra to blend with its background. A mass of blended stripes from a large, moving group of zebras makes it difficult for the lion to plan an attack on any specific zebra. Like fingerprints, zebras have uniquely identifiable stripes useful to one another and scientists. They seem to get some kind of pleasure from looking at stripes. Stripes seem to be so important to the zebra that black and white stripes painted on a wall will attract zebras to group near the wall.

by Miss Cellania - March 6, 2008 - 5:30 AM Zebras A crossbred zebra is known as a zebroid or zebra mule. Zebroids were originally bred as pack animals in Africa for practical reasons. They are more resistant to certain diseases, such as sleeping sickness, than horses or donkeys. Zebroids for domestic use are bred for the look of a zebra, tempered by the domesticated nature of a horse or donkey. The crossbreed is often shaped like the non-zebra parent, which makes finding a proper saddle simpler than trying to ride a zebra. Zebra stripes tend to show up on at least part of the hybrid’s body.
