The Great Migration
By Jennifer Steinberg Holland
Photographs by Anup and Manoj Shah
They're born to roam: East Africa's plains zebras follow the rains in one of the greatest migratory shows on Earth.
Read this compelling excerpt, or print the whole story.
Perhaps it was a playful doodle by the Designer of Wild Things that led to the zebra: a horse in costume (candy wrapper? prison garb?) animating Africa's vast stage. Why the dizzying stripes, with no two coats quite the same? No one's sure, but the pattern may repel insects or distort the animal's outline in dim light, confusing predators. Anup Shah and his brother, Manoj, spent a year photographing these flamboyant cousins to the horse, finding a visual feast in the animals' giant herds and athletic strides. "With zebras," says Anup, "you just point the camera at the fantastic view."

Like their close relative the horse, zebras are nomadic and graze on grasses. No one knows what advantage stripes are for zebras. They may simply be an esthetic, visual preference to members of the opposite sex, like a pretty face or great body among people. Zebras are native to southern and central Africa. Although zebras are very adaptable animals as far as their habitats are concerned, most zebras live in grasslands and savannas. The Grevy's zebra (Equus grevyi) prefers to live in sub desert and arid grasslands. //new fadeshow(IMAGES_ARRAY_NAME, slideshow_width, slideshow_height, borderwidth, delay, pause (0=no, 1=yes), optionalRandomOrder) new fadeshow(fadeimages, 300, 200, 1, 5000, 1, "") Zebras were the second species to diverge from the earliest proto-horses, after the asses, around 4 million years ago. The Grevy's zebra is believed to have been the first zebra species to emerge. Zebra Characteristics Zebras are generally 2.3 metres (8 feet) long, stand 1.25 - 1.5 metres (4 - 5 feet) at the shoulder and weigh around 300 kilograms (660 pounds), although some can grow to more than 410 kilograms (900 pounds). Zebras have excellent hearing and eyesight and are capable of running at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour. Zebras bodies are well adapted to their surroundings. Zebras have long, thin legs for ease of movement and quick, efficient get-away's from predators. Zebras have horse like bodies, however, their manes are made of short, erect hair, their tails are tufted at the tip and their coats are striped. Zebras are best known for their distinctive white and black stripes, which come in different patterns unique to each individual. Their stripes are a form of camouflage called 'disruptive colouration' that breaks up the outline of the body so it is difficult to make them out particularly in the dawn light when predators are most active.

Attack of the Zebras
Wednesday, January 30, 2008 Sean Donahue, DO An 80 year old mentor, and Physician once told me, “being a good doctor is not understanding the typical presentation of uncommon disease, but rather the atypical presentation of common disease.” I have tried to keep these words close as I have journeyed through Medicine…but it is difficult. We naturally want to gravitate, especially in Emergency Medicine towards the “Zebras,” or those disease states which we feel will cause the patients the most harm, (even though they may not be that likely): “Sir, you say you are having chest pain, and it feels just like your heart burn? Well it could be…but it also could be a heart attack, an aortic dissection, a pulmonary embolism etc...” We as Emergency Physicians are trained to think this way; we do not want to miss a disastrous diagnosis. We need to watch for the Zebras while herding the common cow. (Forgive me for the coarse analogy.)

Zebras Zebras are animals that resemble the horse . They walk, trot, canter and gallop like horses , but do not move as quickly. Unlike the horse, zebras have not been domesticated and run wild They are odd-toed ungulates which means they have an odd number of toes on each hoof
Their eyes are located on the side of their head , and they have excellent eyesight Because zebras live in the wild, they need to be able to escape predators. Night vision helps them to see in the dark Zebras also have great hearing and an excellent sense of taste and smell
Three species of zebras live in Africa The species are the Plains Zebra , which is the most common one, the Mountain Zebra , and the Grevy Zebra

Zebras - ACS Student Consultants
Student consultants, known as "Zebras", are available to assist students with the basics of using ACS computer labs. They are called Zebras because of their distinctive black and white shirts. Zebras can help you with e-mail, word processing, programming tools, locally-supported packages, printing, and on-line documentation. However, if you are seeking help with software applications and techniques that are specific to your course, you will need to speak with your instructor or TA instead of a Zebra. Zebras are available when classes are in session during the fall, winter, and spring quarters (but not during finals week). They are available for very limited hours during the summer.
Zebra help via e-mail
Although it is usually much more effective to get help in person in a lab, it sometimes works to ask questions via e-mail. Be sure to include as much relevant detail in your message as possible. The Zebra address is zebras@ucsd.edu
