Zebras make brief escape in Baltimore
The Associated Press Article Launched: 03/20/2008 04:56:21 PM MDT
var requestedWidth = 0; Carrie Coleman, a veterinary technician for the circus, told The (Baltimore) Sun it was a frightening incident because the animals were in traffic lanes before returning to the sidewalk. "They may have thought they were headed home," she said, adding that the zebras were not hurt. The same three zebras, plus a fourth, made a similar escape in June during the circus' visit to Colorado Springs, Colo.

"They may have thought they were headed home," Carrie Coleman, a veterinary technician with the circus, told The Baltimore Sun.
It's not clear whether Mali, Giza and Lima think of the African savanna as home since they were born in Missouri. The same three zebras, along with a fourth named Guinea, made a previous escape, also brief, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"They must have enjoyed the mountains," Coleman said.
In Baltimore, the three got out of the 1st Mariners Arena and got half a block away.
Coleman said she was scared when they were in the street but luckily no cars passed and they moved to the sidewalk.
The animals are gelded Grant's zebras. The species is known for good eyesight and speed.

August 17, 2007 Kenya has begun a great migration of 2,000 animals to a popular game park devastated by crime and poaching, wildlife officials have announced. In the 1970s Meru National Park, located in central Kenya, was "overrun" by bandits and poachers, leading to a drastic loss of wildlife, the officials said. Shenyang botanical park is charging 30 pence for a photograph with the 'zebras' - which have been adorned with black stripes and fluffy white hair - but claims the stunt is "just for fun".
One mother who paid for her child to have her picture taken with the animal agreed that the attraction was harmless.
She said: "We saw right away that the zebra is fake, but we are here for fun, so it doesn't really matter." When asked about the authenticity of the animal, a worker said: "It's from Africa. What do you call it, if it's not a zebra?" If you have any questions regarding information in these press releases please contact the company added in the press release. IUCN Status: Data Deficient. Captive Management Level: EEP Size: Height up to 1.4m. Weight up to 340kg. Habitat and Distribution : Open savannah and grasslands in East Africa, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Age: Up to 30 years in captivity. Groups and Breeding: Zebras form small harems, with a single stallion and up to six females, plus offspring. Males without harems will sometimes form large bachelor groups. They become sexually mature at around 3 years but a male may not actually be able to get access to females until he is about 6 (as he is not strong enough to fight the more mature males). Once pregnant, gestation lasts about 370 days when the female gives birth to a single foal. If she is healthy the female may become pregnant again immediately! Young can be born at any time of the year but there is a peak during the early rainy season (December to January). Diet: Zebras are primarily grazers of grasses and sedges but may also eat bark, leaves, buds, fruits and roots. They must drink water every day so will always be found near water sources.

    Introduction to the Perissodactyla
The last of a long line
"Odd-toed" or "odd-hoofed" mammals make up the Perissodactyla. Like the "even-toed" Artiodactyla , perissodactyls are unguligrades ; that is, they walk on the terminal bones of the toes and have enlarged toenails forming hoofs. Unlike artiodactyls, perissodactyls either walk on three toes (like rhinos, tapirs, many extinct horses, and other extinct groups) or on a single toe (like recent horses). Only seventeen species of perissodactyls remain on the Earth today, a shadow of the group's former glory. Perissodactyls were once much more diverse, including the enormous horned brontotheres, the bizarre browsing, clawed chalicotheres, and the largest land mammal of all time, the Eocene Indricotherium (formerly known as Baluchitherium ). It stood five meters (over sixteen feet) tall at the shoulder.
Most perissodactyl lineages went extinct in the late Eocene or Oligocene quagga , have already been driven to extinction. Fossil Horses in Cyberspace is a great on-line exhibit from the Florida Museum of Natural History. Or, for more information on the most familiar perissodactyl, visit the International Museum of the Horse For information on ungulates, see

A parallelogram polyomino is a translation invariant array of unit squares bounded by two lattice paths that use the steps (0,1) and (1,0), and intersect only initially and finally. The semiperimeter of a polyomino is the length of either of these paths; the width of a polyomino is the number of its columns. We will consider parallelogram polyominoes consisting of black and white columns, called zebras . Barcucci, Del Lungo, Fezzi, and Pinzani [ ] showed that R n n -1) counts the set of zebras with semiperimeter n . Zebra Hybrids Zebras and Zebra Hybrids
Zebra hybrid is an all-encompassing term for a zebra crossed on any other equine. The term Zorse is to used to describe the cross of a zebras stallion to a horse mare. Other terms seen are Zebroid, Zony (zebra x Pony) or Zeony. Zebra -donkey crosses are termed Zebroid, Zebrass, or Ze-donk. A more romantic (but not technically accurate) term that has recently surfaced is "Golden Zebra", used for any zebra hybrid. The once popular term "Zebra mule" is no longer used either.
Zebra stallions are used primarily for zebra Hybrid breeding. Zebra mares are needed for the production of purebred zebras. The rare Zebra hinny has been seen, but zebra stallions that are hand-raised (as opposed to nursed by his zebra mother) with horses or donkeys are much easier to use in Zebroid production.
Zebras may appear to have "ponyish" bodies, but the hip shape does differ as well. Zebras ears are larger and rounder than horse ears. The Mountain zebras have almost donkey-like ears, while the Grevy's zebra sports a huge flared conical ear. The necks are characteristically straighter in the longears, and most donkeys and all zebras lack a true wither. The manes are stiff and upright, and zebras, like donkeys, have no forelocks. Zebras have variety of noises, most commonly the "qua-ha" or "barking" sound. These traits are all passed along, in part, just as they are in Mules, to zebra Hybrid offspring. Most Zebrasses (Zebra X Donkey crosses) look just like donkeys with zebras striping on the colored coat.

photo: Tom Gillespie Characteristics: The distinct black and white stripes of zebras are much like human fingerprints, with no two being exactly alike. Their excellent sense of hearing and elevated eye placement allow them to sense predators from a considerable distance. Zebras live together in small family herds and are rarely found far from a freshwater source. Diet: Zebras are herbivores that feed mainly on coarse grasses and roots less desirable to other grassland species. Reproduction: Females called mares give birth to one foal after a twelve-month gestation period. The newborn weighs about 70 lbs and stands 3 feet tall. Within an hour of birth, the small foal can run fast enough to keep up with the herd. This is important because of the presence of predators looking for easy prey. Environmental Connections: Zebras inhabit grasslands across Africa. African grasslands are called “steppes” or “savannas." Grasslands are characterized by a dry climate with periods of drought.
