So what, exactly, do we need a fear reflex that pumps our heart to get blood to our legs so we can run?!? That seems a little outdated. create exactly the same way our hearts would beat if we were actually being chased by a lion. Class: Mammalia
Order: Perissodactyla
Family: Equidae
Genus: Equus
Subgenus: Hippotigris Dolichohippus
Species Equus zebra
Equus quagga

Equus grevyi
Zebras are odd-toed ungulates of the Equidae family native to eastern, southern and southwestern Africa . They are best known for their distinctive white and black stripes, which come in different patterns unique to each individual. They are generally social animals and can be seen in small harems to large herds. Zebras are generally 2.3 m (8ft) long, stand 1.25-1.5 m (4-5ft) at the shoulder, and weigh around 300kg (660 lbs), although some can grow to more than 410 kg (900 lbs). In addition to their stripes, zebras have erect, mohawk -like manes. Unlike their closest relatives, horses and donkeys , zebras have not been truly domesticated. There are three species of zebra: the Plains Zebra Grevy's Zebra and the Mountain Zebra . They can be found in a variety of habitats, such as grasslands, savannas, woodlands, thorny scrublands, mountains and coastal hills.

Physical Characteristics Zebras, horses and wild asses are all equids, long-lived animals that move quickly for their large size and have teeth built for grinding and cropping grass. Zebras have horselike bodies, but their manes are made of short, erect hair, their tails are tufted at the tip and their coats are striped. Three species of zebra still occur in Africa, two of which are found in East Africa. The most numerous and widespread species in the east is Burchell's, also known as the common or plains zebra. The other is the Grevy's zebra , named for Jules Grevy, a president of France in the 1880s who received one from Abyssinia as a gift, and now found mostly in northern Kenya. (The third species, Equus zebra , is the mountain zebra, found in southern and southwestern Africa.)

Zebra Profile
No animal has a more distinctive coat than the zebra. Each animal's stripes are as unique as fingerprints—no two are exactly alike—although each of the three species has its own general pattern.
Why do zebras have stripes at all? Scientists aren't sure, but many theories center on their utility as some form of camouflage. The patterns may make it difficult for predators to identify a single animal from a running herd and distort distance at dawn and dusk. Or they may dissuade insects that recognize only large areas of single-colored fur or act as a kind of natural sunscreen. Because of their uniqueness, stripes may also help zebras recognize one another.
Zebras are social animals that spend time in herds. They graze together, primarily on grass, and even groom one another.
Plains (Burchell's) zebras are the most common species. They live in small family groups consisting of a male (stallion), several females, and their young. These units may combine with others to form awe-inspiring herds thousands of head strong, but family members will remain close within the herd.

Fun facts
Zebras take dust or mud baths to get clean. They shake the dirt off to get rid of loose hair and flaky skin. What's left protects them from sun, wind, and insects. Zebras are attracted to black-and-white stripes. Even if stripes are painted on a wall, a zebra will tend to go stand next to it! A zebra's eyesight at night is thought to be about as good as that of a cat or an owl.

Information On Zebras Page 1 Zebra Information The Zebra is a part of the horse family, Equidae, native to central, eastern and southern Africa. They are most well known for their distinctive black and white stripes. The most common type of zebra is the Plains Zebra. Plains zebras flourish in huge herds upon open grasslands and semi-desert areas of Africa. They share habitat with antelope, which do not compete for food. Also, mixing of herds may help protect them from predators such as lions and hyenas with power in numbers. Grant's zebra is one of several sub-species of Plains zebras. These zebras average 53 inches in height and weigh between 500 and 700 pounds. It is distinguished from other Plains zebras by the presence of leg striping down to the hooves and broad stripes on a white background. Stripes Zebra’s stripes are an excellent camouflage because lions (zebras main predator) are believed to be color blind. Confusion is another defense mechanism. Zebras cluster together to confuse would-be predators with their stripes when they feel threatened.

How do a zebra's stripes act as camouflage?
Inside This Article How do a zebra's stripes act as camouflage? Lots More Information See all articles To humans, a zebra's stripes stick out like a sore thumb, so it's hard to imagine that the stripes act as camouflage . Zoologists believe stripes offer zebras protection from predators in a couple of different ways. The first is as simple pattern-camouflage, much like the type the military uses in its fatigue design . The wavy lines of a zebra blend in with the wavy lines of the tall grass around it. It doesn't matter that the zebra's stripes are black and white and the lines of the grass are yellow, brown or green, because the zebra's main predator, the lion, is colorblind . The pattern of the camouflage is much more important than its color, when hiding from these predators. If a zebra is standing still in matching surroundings, a lion may overlook it completely.

Big heads, large and rounded ears, and thick, erect manes make the Grevy's zebra appear more mule-like than other zebras. In fact, many experts consider Grevy's zebras to be striped asses that are not closely related to other zebras. Their coats sport dazzling narrow stripes that wrap around each other in a concentric pattern and are bisected by a black stripe running down the spine. Size
Grevy's zebras grow up to nine feet long, weigh up to 990 pounds, and stand up to almost five and a half feet at the shoulder. On average, males are about ten percent larger than females.

You are here » South Africa South African Wildlife Zebra The Zebra belongs to the horse family. Its distinguishing marks are its unique black stripes, akin to the fingerprints on humans.
One of nature's great mysteries is why the Zebra has stripes. One theory is that the stripes help the zebra cool down. On hot days the black stripes get a lot hotter than the white area of the zebra and under the black stripes there are special layers of fat for protection. Hot air then rises off the black stripes forcing colder air down around the white areas thus cooling the zebra down. This, however is just a theory.
