What is cryobiology?
Cryobiology is the study of the effects of very low temperatures on living organisms, organs, biological tissues or biological cells . Cryobiology can be considered to include the study of any biological material or system, such as proteins, cells, tissues, or organs in temperatures below normal. Those temperatures may range from cryogenic range to mild hypothermia range. The effects of low temperatures and ice formation are important in plant and animal science, microbiology, medicine, entomology and food science.
What do cryobiologists do?
Research and lab work is the primary part of the cryobiologist’s day, things they do include:
  • Preservation of cells and tissues for purposes of long-term storage Cryosurgery, a minimally invasive approach for destruction of unhealthy tissue

    Cryobiology
Cryobiology is the study of the effects of very low temperatures on living things. Cryobiology can be used to preserve, store, or destroy living cells. At very low temperatures, cellular metabolism (all the chemical reactions that drive the activities of cells) essentially stops. Freezing technology is used for food preservation, blood storage at hospitals and blood banks, sperm and egg storage, preservation of some transplant tissues, and certain delicate surgeries. Cryopreservation, the freezing and eventual thawing of living material, is the most advanced use of this technology.
    History
    Cellular cryopreservation
Cryopreservation involves keeping cells at extremely low temperatures until they are needed. Careful steps must be taken to insure that the frozen cells will survive and be in good condition when they are thawed. It is important that cells be healthy prior to freezing. Cryopreservation places stress on cells that can cause even some healthy ones to perish during the freezing and thawing process.

    Cryobiology
Cryobiology is the scientific study of the effects of freezing and sub-freezing temperatures on biological fluids, cells, and tissues. It is an extension of cryogenics , which is the study of the properties of matter at very low temperatures. Cryobiological techniques have application in genetic research, livestock breeding, infertility treatment, and organ transplantation. A related field, cryogenics, is devoted to the study of low temperatures effects. Of real and important economic benefit to livestock breeding, there are those who ignore the devastating effects of freezing on subcellular structures to argue that cryonic preservation of humans after death might allow reanimation at a later date. The possibility of such reanimation via cryonics is presently rejected by mainstream scientists. The terms cryobiology and cryogenics are derived from the Greek kryos absolute zero oxygen nitrogen vacuum In the twentieth century, scientists began applying cryogenic techniques to biological systems. They explored methods for treating blood , semen, tissue , and organs with ultra-low temperatures. In the last few decades, this research has resulted in advances in genetic research, livestock breeding, infertility treatment, and organ transplantation.

In practice, this field comprises the study of any biological material or system (e.g., proteins, cells, tissues, organs, or organisms) subjected to any temperature below normal (ranging from moderately hypothermic conditions to cryogenic temperatures). At least 6 major areas of cryobiology can be identified:
  • study of cold-adaptation of microorganisms, plants (= cold hardiness), invertebrates, and animals (= hibernation) cryopreservation of cells, tissues, gametes, and embryos of animal and human origin for (medical) purposes of long-term storage. This usually requires the addition of substances which protect the cells during freezing and thawing (cryoprotectants) preservation of organs under hypothermic conditions for transplantation lyophilization (freeze-drying) of pharmaceuticals cryosurgery, a (minimally) invasive approach for the destruction of unhealthy tissue using cryogenic gases/fluids

Cryobiology Explained by Noted Priest-Scientist By Marie Mulvenna With current interest often expressed about the possibility of freezing and later returning to life, the topic of cryobiology rates high on the list of popular topics for discussion. But discussion is something Father Luyet leaves to the speculators and conversationalists. For the past 17 years, Father Luyet has called Madison, Wisconsin, his home where he has worked endlessly in a research lab and with the assist of a grant to underwrite his studies. He built and fostered a productive non-profit group called The American Foundation for Biological Research, devoted to biophysical studies on freezing and freezing-related phenomena. To encourage more directly health-related applications, he developed a second laboratory in Rockville, Maryland, in 1966. Ordained in 1921, Father Luyet continued his studies for eight years at the University of Geneva, receiving two doctorates, one in biology and one in physics. In 1929 he received a grant from Yale University for graduate studies and arrived in America which was later to become his home. Father Luyet then proceeded to postdoctoral research at the Rockefeller Institute in New York where he became acquainted with Dr. Alexis Carell, the first of the Nobel prize winners in the field of tissue study and culture.
