About Us
Urban Ecology Australia is a non-profit, community-based organisation, promoting people and nature friendly urban settlements.
Urban Ecology News
2007.10.26. The future of humanity is at risk unless serious global environmental issues are addressed quickly and thoroughly, says UN report.
Ecological Cities
An ecological city is a city in balance with nature. Cities are at the centre of nearly all human activity. If we fail to evolve human settlements in balance with nature, our civilisation will fail. We can make ecocities here and now by incorporating energy and water conservation features in buildings, industry and transport, and by cultivating natural ecosystems and human communities in urban public spaces.
Christie Walk
Christie Walk is a medium density housing development located in downtown Adelaide which combines many ecologically sustainable and community enhancing features. It was initiated by UEA as a demonstration project, to promote nature and people friendly urban development by example.

    The Loss of Biodiversity
"The most serious threat to the continuation of all life on this planet is the loss of biological diversity: the varied living beings that inhabit the globe." "It is true that the problem of disappearing species represents not only a conservation crisis on a scale never faced before, but also one of the greatest environmental challenges we are ever likely to confront." These quotes from Kennedy (1990, p. 17) illustrate the gravity of the ecological problem facing humankind - the loss of biodiversity. Although there has always been loss of species as part of the evolution of life, the rapidity with which it is currently occurring largely through anthropogenic influences, is the worrying factor.
Biodiversity at the Species Level - Flora
Botany is the science that deals with all forms of plant life, including mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants, and organisms formerly considered plants: algae, fungi, and lichens . Humans are heavily dependent on plants for oxygen, food, clothing, medicine, and shelter. Yet a surprisingly large percentage of the world's plant species remains unknown, their potential benefits to mankind hidden. Museum botanists are dedicated to documenting the origins and providing classifications of plant life in marine and terrestrial environments and to understanding how humans are affected by and have altered the plant world.

Together, these organizations are dedicated to the preservation of wild nature. In recent years, the Foundation for Deep Ecology has been active in publishing large-format books on diverse environmental topics. These include Wildfire: A Century of Failed Forest Policy Fatal Harvest: The Tragedy of Industrial Agriculture Welfare Ranching: The Subsidized Destruction of the American West , and Clearcut: The Tragedy of Industrial Forestry The Conservation Land Trust works to protect wildlands, primarily in Chile and Argentina. Pumalin Park , a project of the Conservation Land Trust, is comprised of more than 700,000 acres and functions as a national park under a private initiative. While most of the park is pristine wilderness, it has extensive public access and is a popular destination. Created in 2000, Conservacion Patagonica has already placed 450,000 acres of critical Patagonian habitat into permanent protection. Conservacion Patagonica has successfully created one Argentine national park, and is in the process of creating a second in Chile.

Two Years In: Revisiting the Publication Niche for Avian Conservation and Ecology
Deux ans plus tard: retour sur le domaine de publication d’ Écologie et conservation des oiseaux
    Thomas Nudds and Marc-André Villard
Our home page looks slightly different in this issue. However, the changes signify something much more important than their subtle nature might imply. Specifically, the ‘Focus and Scope’ for the journal – its publication niche – was confirmed, clarified, and shifted to a position of greater prominence over the last few months. On this two-year anniversary of ACE-ÉCO, it is appropriate to ask how we are doing relative to our declared publication niche. Between 2005 and 2007, total submissions (new and revised manuscripts) doubled to almost 2/wk; half of those in 2007 were resubmissions. Rejection rates fell from 60% to 44%. These trends are largely due to a decrease in submissions that did not fit the publication niche.
