  • The Measure of "Fitness" In 1859 the English naturalist Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species . The book contained two major arguments: First, Darwin presented a wealth of evidence of evolution natural selection Evolution involves two interrelated phenomena:
    • adaptation Over the course of time, species modify their phenotypes in ways that permit them to succeed in their environment. This page is devoted to looking at how evolution leads to adaptation.
    • speciation Over the course of time, the number of species multiplies; that is, a single species can give rise to two or more descendant species. In fact, Darwin maintained that all species are related; that is, any two species on earth today have shared a common ancestor at some point in their history. The process of speciation is examined in a separate page. Link to it.

    • Living things produce more offspring than the finite resources available to them can support.
    • Thus living things face a constant struggle for existence
    • The individuals in a population vary in their phenotypes
    • Some of this variation is inheritable; that is, it is a reflection of variations in

The word evolution is used in theosophy to denote the universal process by which everything is brought into being; and consequently the subject, if treated in full, would be much too large for a single manual; besides which, the student would be overwhelmed with the vastness of the subject and confused with a mass of details. What we must do, therefore, is to present a broad outline of the subject as a whole and to confine our more detailed treatment to special branches of it, such as the evolution of man and the animals, the Darwinian theory, and similar matters of general interest. And this plan will of course involve the making of approximate statements, true as far as they go, yet not the whole truth. In short, we pursue the usual method adopted by students of any science, and that is to begin with an elementary course and leave the higher course to a later time.

The London Artifact is an iron hammer, surrounded by a solid mass of cretaceous rock. The handle was partially PETRIFIED. It was discovered in London, Texas. Notice the shiny spot on the metal part. The family who found the hammer, filed the metal to see if it was really metal; the spot has not rusted yet, even though it has been about forty-five years. Is it really iron? A test was done on the metal. This hammer contains 96% iron, 2.6% chlorine, and 0.74% sulfur. There are no bubbles in it at all. Yes, it is iron. The quality of which equals or exceeds the quality of any iron found today. [Information courtesy of: CREATION SCIENCE SEMINARS, Mr. Robert C. 71. Stellar Evolution Simulation
A graphical representation of the evolution of stars during their lifetime using the HertzsprungRussell (HR) diagram.
http://instruct1.cit.cornell.edu/courses/astro101/java/evolve/evolve.htm
S TELLAR E VOLUTION Astronomy 101/103 Terry Herter Description Instructions Example to try You need a JAVA enabled browser to view this simulation. DESCRIPTION: The determining factor in the life of a star is its mass. The more massive a star the greater its energy output and the faster it evolves (changes). The about figure shows the temperature-luminosity relation for stars. This is known as the the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Stars on the main-sequence generate energy by converting (via fusion) hydrogen into helium. As stars use up their hydrogen fuel, they evolve off the main-sequence into the giant or supergiant phase. During these stages stars may "burn" helium or other even heavier elements as the core of the star reaches higher and higher temperatures and densities. How far this process proceeds depends on the initial mass of the star. The lowest mass stars will never go beyond hydrogen burning while the highest mass stars can produce elements all the way up to iron in their cores. The above simulation shows the evolution of a star in the H-R diagram. To see a star evolve, simply click on the star or choose a mass with the slide bar and press go. The total evolution of the star will take place over a period of 10 seconds, with the star spending the correct relative amount of time at each step. You can also proceed through the evolution one step at a time using the step button.

Alfa Romeo
Source: Cartype Surprise! Alfa Romeo, the car manufacturer and pride of Italy, traced its beginnings to France. In 1910, Milan aristocrat Cavaliere Ugo Stella collaborated with the French car company Darracq to market the line in Italy. When the partnership failed, Stella moved the company and renamed it Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company) or A.L.F.A. Alfa Romeo’s distinctive logo was created in 1910 by a draftsman named Romano Cattaneo. One day, while waiting for a tram at the Piazza Castello station in Milan, he was inspired by the red cross in the Milan Flag and the Coat of Arms of the noble House of Visconti, which featured a biscione (grass snake) with a man in its jaws, symbolizing "Visconti’s enemies that the snake [was] always ready to destroy." ( Source ) Two Savoia dynasty knots separated the words ALFA and MILANO.

Try to make it through a day without using or hearing the word "evolution" and you'll see just how widespread this theory is. Evolution is fascinating because it attempts to answer one of the most basic human questions: Where did life, and human beings, come from? The theory of evolution proposes that life and humans arose through a natural process. A very large number of people do not believe this, which is something that keeps evolution in the news. In this article, we will explore the theory of evolution and how it works. We will also examine several important areas that show holes in the current theory places where scientific research will be working in the coming years in order to complete the theory. The holes are considered by many to be proof that the theory of evolution should be overthrown. As a result, quite a bit of controversy has surrounded evolution ever since it was first proposed.
